JMU LARGE ENSEMBLE AUDITION MATERIAL SPRING 2021 FLUTE Attached is flute audition music for JMU School of Music Large Ensembles for the SPRING 2021 semester. Auditions for all Woodwind, Brass and Percussion will be submitted online. Details will be outlined by the JMU School of Music Ensemble Area. ALL MUSIC MAJORS MUST AUDITION! (…regardless of class standing or number of ensemble credits already accumulated!) ***NOTE: These excerpts ALL will be recorded in their entirety, unless you are otherwise notified.*** SPRING 2021 1. Dvorak—Symphony No. 4 (8), Op. 88, IV. Allegro ma non troppo, rehearsal C through rehearsal E (with all repeats) 2. Beethoven—Symphony No. 4 in Bb Major, II.: Adagio, pick-ups to rehearsal E (m. 64) to m. 72 3. Saint-Saëns—Carnival of the Animals, No. 10—Volière (all) PICCOLO: Prokofiev—Lieutenant Kijé, I. The Birth of Kijé: 5 th measure of rehearsal 1 to rehearsal 3 PICCOLO: JMU Flute Majors are required to prepare these piccolo excerpts. It is optional for others, unless you are interested in being considered to primarily play piccolo in an ensemble. [JMU Flute Majors: Unfortunately, JMU-owned piccolos will not be available for your audition. You may use ANY piccolo to which you currently have access, even if it is not a concert instrument (marching piccolos are okay, and we will be gracious, understanding listeners!). Please do your own research to determine that what is printed is correct. Be sure to look up any foreign terms for which you are not certain of the definition! These excerpts are extracted from Jeanne Baxtresser’s Orchestral Excerpts for the Flute and Jack Wellbaum’s Orchestral Excerpts for Piccolo. You will find your own copy of those books useful in your preparation. Please practice carefully and make every effort to study material through listening to recordings and studying the full orchestral scores (many of which are on IMSLP). You can easily find recordings via MANY online resources, including JMU online streaming options you can access off campus via the JMU Music Library site....
