Nationwide Building Society...

As a key client I had a long term partnership with Nationwide through Reloc8’s services carrying out works at all of their main office buildings in Swindon, Northampton, Bournemouth plus several smaller offices.

My role was to organise and implement all aspects of their internal design and space planning, workspace consultancy, and day to day people and workstation moves, thus creating a logistical requirement for our project management team and other departments to be in continual communication, ensuring every element of a project is covered and detailed to allow us to carryout projects from the smallest workstation installation with minimal space planning requirements right up to full office, breakout and meeting area refurbishments involving upwards of 600 workstations and all trade works required to strip out the entire area and implement the installation of all new services and finishes before finally installing the workstation and personal belongings of the relocated staff.

Placemaking, ‘Living Office’ & Consultancy with HERMAN MILLER

‘Can a workplace boldly declare your purpose and address your business priorities? Can it say something about who you are to all who pass through its doors? Can it be tailored to meet the shifting demands of the work being done there? We at Herman Miller believe yours can.’ My background is in Workplace Design and Consultancy and have been working with ‘Agile’ solutions for many years Working with the Knowledge and Insight team, I was also a ‘product’ of Living Office theory. Working where I need to be, in the right place for the task I need to do, with the tools I need to do it and in an environment that allows me to interact, collaborate, meet with colleagues or to work carefully on an individual activity.

Using Herman Miller’s unique Living Office Discovery Process as part of the HM team, I was able to connect with organisations at an early stage to gather essential information to help them understand their own needs and realise their vision. I have worked with Dealers and Architects throughout the design process to inform and contribute to the client’s realisation of their ‘Living Office.’ A clear process of engagement with key stakeholders, end users to fully understand organisational culture and to enable change.

This is a journey from inquiry and understanding to the development and management of a workplace that expresses an organisation’s unique character and helps it progress toward its goals and ambitions. Building on our Placemaking research and insights, we developed a roadmap supported by information and tools that our clients and design partners can use and adapt to their unique needs and circumstances.

The power of colour in our workplace. “Colour and light are major factors in man-made environments; their impact influences man's psychological reactions and physiological well-being. It is no longer valid to assume that the only role of light and colour is to provide adequate illumination and a pleasant visual environment.” Frank and Rudolph H. Manke The subject of colour psychology in the environment is not a new one, psychologists, artists and designers have been researching this since the days of Geothe's colour wheel. In practical terms, however, it has not been overly used in the modern working environment. There are some simple principles, that we all perceive: red - is hot blue - is cold There is the visual and the feeling, we also need to consider company branding and colour trends and certain colours lend themselves to tasks and the functionality of a room or space. People working on repetitive tasks or a production line, need bright stimuli around them, but an accountant shouldn't perhaps work in a red room...Creatives get by with white as a canvas, or yellows and purples to generate the creative juices. Colours are also subjective to an individual's memory associations, cultural background and country of origin. A recent example of a project I undertook with colour psychology was a series of consultants rooms for a well known Health company. The client wanted the rooms to feel welcoming to individuals who were undergoing work based assessments and who may have been nervous, therefore we chose a combination of pale greens and mauves to enliven (green is nature and has a calming influence) and comfort at the same time. Certain hues like yellow and orange will invigorate and stimulate the intellect if used in the right quantities. Light plays an important part in all this and a colour change lighting system can revolutionise a Boardroom, for instance, by enabling it to be customised according to use, even using human biorhythms to regulate intake. There is much that can be done to tailor a colour scheme for maximum effect and not only to enhance a space but to actually increase productivity. A very famous example of colour being used in this way is; 'Baker Miller Pink' a particularly bright, bubble gum pink used to calm violent prisoners in jails. Dr. Alexander Schauss was the first to report the suppression of angry, violent behaviour among prisoners. “Even if a person tries to be angry or aggressive in the presence of pink, he can't... Even the colour blind are tranquilized by pink rooms.” lind are tranquilized by pink rooms.‘
