FEEL

At Jigme Losel School, we FELT bothered by how the earth’s environment is not being looked after.

Page 4: Jigme Losel Primary School: “Journey from the Kitchen to the Garden”

For as our lives and the ecosystem are primarily dependent on nature, it is of utmost importance to take care of nature for the future generations, so that plants and animals can survive on this earth.

IMAGINE

Our DFC members wanted to carry out a project with the theme, “The Journey from the Kitchen to the Garden”, which would include the management of degradable waste, which we would use for our garden.

That way our work could be one of the solutions to helping our environment.

DO

To carry out our Story of Change, students and teachers:

* brought in their food wastes for compost * Consulted with the school’s Agriculture Club

on how to make compost.* Used the compost in our School Garden.

The students learn a lot of skills, such as keeping to a schedule to water and manure their plants, and caring for the plants.

SHARE

• Upon generating the waste, the waste is shared amongst all the teachers, who then share it with their students.

• The students use the manure for nurturing their flowers and other kinds of plants that they raise in pots and other recycled items such as containers

Caring for plants in the garden develops within the students the concept and value of care, as well as appreciation and observation skills.

SHARE

The students also develop a love for nature as the growth of their plants take place, and they ultimately understand the importance of organic farming and the advantages of eating healthily.

SHARE

As we see the great impact that making the best use of our kitchen waste has, we will encourage the school to work on the project as a whole.

We would further like to showcase the outcome of the project to Thimphu schools, so as to give a message that The Journey from the Kitchen to the Garden is a solution.
