Last Wednesday morning, at around 04:00, the body of Postmore Sibanda was found hanging from an overhead cable on the corner of Kindon and Harry Street, Robertsham. He died while he was trying to cut and steal the overhead cable.According to W/O Lorraine Van Emmerick, Booysens SAPS spokesperson, a security guard who was doing patrols noticed the deceased on the pole. “City Power Technicians isolated the area for paramedics to remove the body. This electricity switch-off only affected customers in Harry Street and it was restored by 7:30 that morning. This individual was found dead at the top of a nine meter pole with a bolt cutter in his possession. Police are currently investigating the cause of death. We regret his death, particularly as it was unnecessary,” Sol Masolo, City Power’s spokesperson said.W/O Van Emmerick said the detectives are waiting for the autopsy report and it will most likely be ruled as electrocution. The deceased is believed to be around 30 years of age. His cell phone was found during

investigation. The SAPS answered a call and the caller identified the deceased.City Power experiences about 3000 cable theft incidents per annum. “Electricity and cable theft is a serious offence which compromises the stability of our network and affects service delivery to all our customers. In addition, it puts community lives at risk,” Masolo explained.Currently City Power is rolling out ABC (Aerial Bundle Conductor) cable across Johannesburg that has aluminium content and has no value to cable thieves. It is also laying concrete on surfaces where their cables are running in order to minimize cable theft incidents.“There is a danger when stealing cable and that is death. There has been a large amount of cases opened at Booysens SAPS concerning theft of cable and the management of the station has taken the approach of zero tolerance against suspects arrested,” W/O Van Emmerick concluded.

AQH Medical Centre launched their first biggest loser competition on 22 February. Sixteen female contestants had the courage to enter and bravely decided they want to change their lifestyle for the better. Women came as far as Fourways and Midrand, even Cst Elizabeth Mgnuni from Mondeor SAPS entered.Three months is the time period the contestants have to lose the most weight with the final weigh-in on 23 May. The launch day included an aerobics session by gym instructor Samkelo Ncube and each contestant was

assessed by Dr Rakumakoe, where their current meal plans and physical activity amounts were assessed. “Based on their daily

schedules, a meal plan and an exercise plan they can adhere to were designed. The diet is based on the paleo low carbohydrate and high protein approach. The exercises are recommended to be 3 to 5 times a week, for a minimum of 30 minutes per session,” Dr Rakumakoe said.Dr Rakumakoe has a MB BCH, Diploma in Occupational Health,

Diploma in HIV Management, Masters in Sports Medicine

and Masters in Business

Administration.The contestants will weigh in every Saturday at the Mondeor-based medical centre, with Dr Rakumakoe giving ongoing support and advice as well as additional tips on their website www.aqh.co.za. The death of the cable thief got a lot of comments on the tame TIMES Facebook page. There were comments like “Serves him right, he will never steal again,” to which another person commented, “Duh, the dude is dead!” Another person even wrote a little poem, “Ashes to ashes, dust to dust. If you play with cables, your body will rust!”As I said to a colleague, this is a tricky one. The man was stealing, so punishment is definitely a must; but at the end of the day the man is still a human being and he died. He has a family who is now mourning him and will never see him again.I want to know, how desperate are these cable thieves? They know the dangers of cable theft - instant death. It is not like a house robbery, where if you get caught you go to jail and might come out after your sentence. It is instant death.What I also find interesting is the pole was 9m high. How do cable thieves get up there? I was told they climb up the pole. Now that is impressive. Not only do they know they could die if they steal cables, but they also have to perform acrobatics in order to get to the cable. It seems like a lot of hard work with way too much risk. So in my mind they must be utterly desperate to go to all this trouble. I have enquired as to how much the copper is bought for at scrapyards. It can range from R10 to R75 a kilo, depending on who buys it. Doesn’t seem like a lot of money to risk your life for.Another question comes to mind: that deceased suspect must have had other thieves with him, assisting him, and they just left him there. Clearly there is no loyalty among thieves. Seeing your friend get electrocuted to death, does that make you stop stealing cables?The question here: Do you agree with the comments on facebook, that death was the correct punishment for the cable thief? Mondeor Police Station has been under renovation since August last year. When the upgrade is finished at the end of April, disabled residents will benefit from having an easy accessible ramp to enter the station.Cst Elizabeth Mnguni, Mondeor SAPS media spokesperson said, “The station was not accessible for disabled people and for this reason it was decided that renovations needed to be done.” The decision to renovate came about in 2009.Mnguni added that the building is old and the

roof was leaking, so when there was rainy weather the Crime Investigations Division (CID) officers had to leave their offices due to the leaks. This means there will be more hours put in as the officers will now have safe and comfortable offices to work in. The bathrooms were also not up to standard.The Department of Public Works paid for the renovations, however it is not known how much the Mondeor SAPS’s renovations cost.The community and police officers should both be happy about these renovations. For the public, the station will be more welcoming

and accessible, and the officers will have a safe and comfortable environment to work in.However, some residents have reported bad service when entering the Customer Service Centre (CSC) when they report crimes.With this in mind, tame TIMES asked residents if they thought CCTV cameras should be installed in the CSC to monitor the service given. All answered yes.Thabiso Nkadimeng said, “Good stuff, transparency is a must.” Sixtus Nkosi added,”Not only in Mondeor but all stations.”

I realise and accept the need for school transport companies. Hundreds of learners rely on these transport companies for a ride home and I have no doubt that they are running a legitimate and valuable business. However, I am a resident here in the South, and have been for 21 years. I also happen to be a staff member of one the South’s larger high schools. With that in mind I would like to share the following. As a resident, it unnerves me deeply to know that there are strangers sitting around all day in my area. This makes our area look shoddy and unsafe, and it gives these strangers days on end to monitor our daily routines. As a staff member who spent a number of years as a disciplinarian, I am fully aware of the danger of having these school transport companies sitting around all day. The photo shown alongside the article shows three seemingly respectable gentlemen, the truth however is far more worrying. Many of the drivers for these companies are youngsters, some of whom are even past pupils, with little driving experience and even less road manners.

I want to inform the community and the parents of the children in schools of the reality they face. I am aware that some transporters have been involved with underage children and have often been seen taking children away from school during school hours. There have been incidents of learners bunking school and hiding out at the spots where the transport drivers wait during the day. This I have seen first hand, and I have done many busts and raids in this department. And the fact that 9 times out of 10 they drive the same vehicles as regular taxis only raises suspicion amongst the community.With all this in mind, I would like to request that the transport drivers meet with the ward councillor, Mr Dos Santos, and JMPD to discuss a solution. Perhaps an area away from schools and residential areas. I would not want to disrupt the transports business, but our community and the best interest of our school children should always be the main priority.Mulbarton resident writes:We have the same problem in Mulbarton outside Mulbarton Primary. They park in Dalbini Road. It doesn’t look good.

A resident who lives on the bend of Beryl Avenue, Glenanda is considering selling her house. Coming in and out of her driveway has become too dangerous since Beryl Avenue was extended to connect to Rifle Range Road last year October.“I have been living here for 24 years. In all those years only one accident occurred, however since January this year four accidents have already happened on the curb,” the frustrated resident explained.The road was extended to accommodate the new townhouse complexes that are being built in that area. The resident said that she has approached Balwin Properties with her concerns and they have put up a sign indicating a concealed entrance, as well as a traffic mirror, but this hasn’t helped. “They say they have done everything they can and I must now contact Johannesburg Road Agency(JRA) for something to be done,” she said.The Glenanda resident said that the road is full with traffic in peak times, making it impossible to get in or out of the driveway. “We get hooted at and even sworn at when we go in our driveway, with people just

overtaking us to try and get past.”Apparently a petition was started for the new road not to be opened, but by the time they found about it, it was too late. The resident would like speed humps or, ideally, the road to be closed off and only accessible for residents who stay in that road. ”Another four complexes are coming up, can you imagine the traffic then?”When tame TIMES visited the house and parked in the driveway, they experienced the danger the resident speaks of. On four occasions vehicles came zooming past, not worrying about the vehicle trying to get out of the driveway. “If I have to put my own big sign up saying slow down, I will,” the resident said.Clr Dennis Jane, the ward councillor for the area explained, ”The plans for Balwin’s development were passed as far back as 2006. This includes the design of the road that is now the object of concern. Had the community objected, it may have brought about change. When the resident approached me last year, I suggested she get the community to draw up a petition that expressed their concerns and requests speed restrictionsto be introduced in Beryl Avenue.”“This petition was received by the relevant department of the Joburg City Council in June last year. My attempts to expedite the process has had little success. The petition process requires that affected Municipal Entities and/or other CoJ departments prepare a report. When all reports have been received by the Petition Committee a date is set for a hearing for interested parties. In this instance JRA and the petitioners. As of 18 February, JRA claims to have submitted the report to the Petition Committee. The latter claims not having received it yet. I will continue to press for the hearing date to be set.”

In recent weeks there has been an outcry from many residents about the state of the suburbs in the South. The implication, and indeed often stated comments made by residents to councillors, is that they are not doing their job. Clr Dennis Jane, the whip for the Democratic Alliance councillors in the South, refutes these allegations.“For those residents who are not aware, the process of reporting problems is to phone the call centre on 011 375 555 or 0860 JOBURG (56 2874), report the pothole, long grass, piles of rubbish, leaking meter etc, that have been seen. The call centre will provide the caller with a reference number. If the reported problem is not fixed in a reasonable time then it can be escalated to the ward councillor. We do not wait for residents to contact us. Many of the problems we observe are reported without residents contacting us,” Clr Jane

said.Clr Jane has provided a table that reflects the status of calls (complaints) dealt with by the various municipal owned entities (ME’s) for the second quarter - Oct-Dec 2013. “The statistics are for work done in Region F (parts of the inner city going south to suburbs north of Swartkoppies Road) and indicates that 66% of reported complaints in the quarter have not been resolved. So, it’s the City’s ‘employees’ that have failed the residents not the councillors,” the Ward 56 councillor said.“Hopefully readers will find the information interesting and it should go a long way to support my claim that it is not councillors who are not doing their job, but rather council departments and municipal owned entities (ME’s) that fail to live up to Exec Mayor Parks Tau’s claim of Johannesburg being a World Class African City,” Jane concluded.

Defending the councillors

According to Clr Dennis Jane an approach was made on 18 February to the Benrose Depot Management of JRA, who have recently been made responsible for road markings. The request was for an ambulance bay sign to be painted in the road at the entrance to the Rosettenville Clinic in Rose Street. Six days later and the sign was up.“The purpose of the sign is to discourage motorists from parking at the clinic entrance, thus creating a problem for ambulances when they had to collect patients to be taken to hospital. JRA excelled themselves, the road markings were done by 25 February,” Clr Jane said.However, the new road marking hasn’t deterred motorists from parking there.

Clr Jane spotted a vehicle parked in the ambulance parking, took a photo and left a note for the owner. “I left a note under the windscreen wiper blade, suggesting that the next time he repeated the offence it could cost him R1000.”

I read with utter dismay at the childish manner of Clr Sergio Dos Santos’ modus operandi. There is no denying the fact that he was duly elected as the Ward councillor in ward 54. In this role, he is expected to represent the interest of all members of ward 54, and not serve his political party. The complaint he is making can best be summarised as sour grapes. What is more disturbing is that Dos Santos claimed, “I will be attending this event and will be asking publicly why I was not invited or consulted as the democratically elected ward councillor”. On 15 March he failed to attend this meeting and that is poor leadership.Dos Santos must not lie to us. He was invited, and instead of attending he went on to mobilise members of the community not to attend by claiming that he was not invited nor consulted. Despite his counter-mobilisation and snubbing the event, the attendance was huge and very representative, because citizens are concerned about issues that affect them.Joburg Ten Plus is a product of engagement, discussion and approval by the City of Joburg governance, which includes Clr Dos Santos’ participation. This was about us citizens, and

not anti-progress people like Clr Dos Santos. In launching it to Ward 54, as is happening in all wards of Joburg, the City through the Office of the City Manager is driving this process.I want to thank the City of Joburg for taking this initiative to launch this long overdue project in ward 54. I am proud that the Mayor’s spouse, through her Spousal Office, who is championing development in our area. Keep it up and do more. People like Dos Santos can wait for “official or legal status”, but we as citizens want a committed Mayor supported by his wife. As citizens we want a Joburg free from grime and the crime, and we are going to join the City to take the Joburg Ten Plus forward - with or without Clr Dos Santos.It is not often that the Executive Mayor addresses residents of our ward, and when such an opportunity presents itself the Clr should be at the forefront. It must be noted that the Executive Mayor is a resident of this ward, and the Clr’s failure to attend the meeting after publicly indicating that he was going to attend is an act of disrespect to all of us as citizens. Clr Dos Santos response to this letter will be in next week’s edition.

I saw the article about street lights being on since Christmas in Joubert Avenue, Glenanda South and then the resolution of it. Thank you.I would like to bring up Wemmer Pan Road. I drive along daily to get onto the M1 North at Mooi Street. Since beginning of January, not only are these lights on during the day (not sure about during the night), but every storm water drain has had the big concrete cover smashed into tiny pieces. Most days the rocks/stones/rubble is lying in the road and cars have to swerve to avoid it.The road floods with heavy rain or downpour. Also the light poles are damaged, some were

lying in the road for days, and still there are poles with lights dangling from them or half falling over with wires hanging loose. Driving between Linmeyer, Rosettenville, Alberton and Mondeor on a daily basis, I have witnessed many street lights on during the day, even on the highways (Reading interchange). Is it be possible to get some sort of free sms line where people are encouraged to report where lights are on, with info such as time, street and suburb. This can earn them free airtime for 5 reports or something.tame TIMES have sent this letter to City Power and are waiting for a response.

It is safe to say that we all support the recycling of plastic, paper and glass. However, on the face of it the new initiative by Pikitup will put the very humble trash scavengers we see every week out of business.These guys identified a niche market, equipped themselves and by dint of very hard work have turned themselves into modest entrepreneurs. It looks as if the Pikitup way will result in all of them becoming unemployed and as a consequence swell the ranks of potential criminal elements. True, their large loads cause a bit of inconvenience on the roads, but they generally operate outside of peak hours and I have yet to hear that any of them was the cause of a serious accident. I have also never heard that their presence has led to increased crime in their wake. They certainly do not steal wheelie bins, as it would appear some guys from Pikitup have been doing.

As far as I know, their very efficient sorting of recyclables does not cost us a cent. On the other hand it would appear that Pikitup has invested in extra machinery, equipment and materials and possibly additional staff. The trash scavengers will probably help themselves to the sorted trash before Pikitup can get to it and hopefully Pikitup won’t use strong-arm tactics to prevent them from doing so. Until such time as Pikitup has, publically, and by way of this newspaper, given the assurance that any and all additional costs of their recycling initiative will be made up by companies such as the twelve or so bodies and associations displayed on their brochures, and until such time it has confirmed that none of the ruling party elite or their hangers-on will benefit financially from any possible tenderpreneurial contracts, I will stick with the status quo.

Pikitup recycling: puts trash scavengers out of business

Do we really live in a horrible country? Is the neighbourhood really going to the dogs? Were the good old days really much better? These and a dozen more questions have plagued my mind in recent days; maybe it’s due to the upcoming elections or maybe I’m just tired of all the negative commentary.I’m under no illusion about the state of the country, but I do not believe we live in a victory-less country. The problem, I believe, is the alignment of our perspective. Rather than celebrating kilometres upon kilometres of progress, we would rather go on about a pothole. On the flip side of this argument is the truth which I’m not denying, we cannot pretend that there are no problems. However, denying ourselves the opportunity to celebrate the advances creates an air of negativity.I get angry at international reports, which often focus on the challenges we still face. Only recently though I realised that most of the time international opinions are built up by the things we say.It’s a classic marketing strategy that we as a community still need to understand and implement. If I own a company and employ twenty people, those twenty people are the first people I need to market the company to. Once that is achieved they will in turn market the company to those I need to make use of the services I offer.So really we perpetuate the views the world has of the country. The question then becomes, what image of the country do we want to send out?I certainly do not live in a in a negative place, there is a lot to love and celebrate about this place. My tante se man het al ‘n uur terug gery op soek na ons, maar my battery het intussen pap geword en Gysie s’n is weer by die huis vergeet. Ons is toe maar aan genade oorgelaat. Nee kyk, ek was lanklaas so benoud! Rondom ons ou skedonk van ‘n motor sien mens net verlate velde en plotte se liggies daar in die verte. Hy het elke dag vir haar briewe gepos en kilometers op sy motorfiets afgelê om by haar te kuier. Haar pa het die verhouding nie goedgekeur nie, maar waar daar ‘n wil is, is daar ‘n weg. Die jong man het elke aand skelmpies vir sy nooi gaan kuier en soms het hulle saam uit die huis gesluip vir die aand. Een aand het die pa besluit dat hy die laaste lag sal hê; hy span toe flymskerp doringdraad oor die pad, skouerlengte, en wag vir die kêrel. ‘n Paar minute later kom die jong man met ‘n stinkspoed by die pad afgejaag en hy is onmiddelik onthoof. Baie mense vandag sê dat hulle ver in die donker soms motorfietsliggies sien flikker en verdwyn. Ander beweer dat hulle ‘n huilende jong vrou langs die pad sien loop, maar sodra mens wil stop om haar op te laai, verdwyn sy. Nee kyk, vir spoke het ek nie tyd nie! One suspect was arrested on 14 February by Sgt Nhlapho of Moffatview SAPS in Nephin Road, South Hills for possession of suspected stolen property. Four suspects managed to escape.Sgt Nhlapho noticed a group of young males going across Nephin Road into a field. The males were carrying a large screen TV and small items, like computer monitors and laptops.Sgt Nhlapho chased after the suspects as they started running. Two members from the public assisted him. The suspect dropped the TV screen. A warning shot was fired telling the suspects to stop. One of them fell on the ground and was arrested. The suspect was in possession of an LG Monitor and DVDs in a black plastic. The other four suspects ran away.

Four ladies, aged between 21 to 30 years of age, were arrested on 26 February for sexual offenses and allegedly living from the proceeds of immorality in Gazzelle Street, Mayfield Park.

A 28-years-old suspect was arrested by Sgt Nkutha, Cst Maluleke, Cst (f) Khumalo and Cst Ragoale of Mondeor Detective Service on 25 February in Evaton for Theft from Motor Vehicle.The theft incident occurred on 17 December 2013 in Milk Plum Street, Naturena when the complainant gave the suspect the vehicle to sell. The suspect disappeared with the vehicle and it was found stripped and most of the parts were sold. Parts of an Audi A3 were recovered in Evaton and De Deur. On 17 January a case of use of motor vehicle without the owner’s consent was opened in Mondeor SAPS.

A suspect was arrested for possession of dagga on 21 February by members of Booysens SAPS in Turffontein.Officers of Booysens were doing patrols when they spotted a Ford Fiesta driven by an unknown suspect. When the suspect parked, an officer noticed that he was approached by another person. He observed a parcel being exchanged between the two people. The officers approached the unknown suspect and searched the suspect and vehicle. They found a dagga cigarette on the suspect and arrested him.

A suspect was arrested by Booysens SAPS members for possession of drugs in Kenilworth.The officers were patrolling. They were approached by a member of the community, who informed them that there was a person selling drugs further up the street at a certain address. They proceeded to the mentioned address and stopped next to the suspect. They searched him and found a small plastic bag containing a white substance.

A suspect was arrested on 23 February by Booysens SAPS for possession of suspect stolen motor vehicle in Forest Hill. Members of Booysens SAPS received a complaint from radio control concerning a suspicious vehicle that was parked in Schuller Street. The complainant who phoned in mentioned that the vehicle was not supposed to be parked there. The officers called in the registration of the vehicle and were told that the vehicle was stolen. The officers approached the suspect, who admitted to parking the vehicle, and took him to Booysens SAPS for further investigation.

tame TIMES JHB South Editor Laurelle Williams and Senior Sales Executive Loreen Fletcher experienced one of the most amazing and relaxing outdoor activities recently – horse riding at the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve Horse Trails.Samantha Derham has recently taken over the horse trails and delights riders with her vast knowledge of the Klipriviersberg Nature Area and its rich history. She is a responsible and cheerful trail leader with a lifetime of riding experience.The trail is just over an hour, where two streams are crossed on a trail with uphills and

downhills. A group of seven riders can ride at once with Derham leading. Derham rides at a pace to accommodate all riders, even the most inexperienced riders.While riding through God’s beautiful gift to us, nature, on one of God’s most exquisite creatures, the horse, the stress of the week just dissipates into the open air and a new appreciation for life is born.Joseph Ndlovu, who stays in the reserve and takes care of the horses, is on hand for the first stretch on the trail and also has vast knowledge of all animals in the reserve. He pointed out that a zebra foal was born that morning and tame TIMES was lucky

enough to see the little zebra running around. Wildebeest and buck were also spotted.This is a must for all residents, not only those residing in the South but from all over. It is a breath-taking experience.

An e-mail message did the rounds last week telling registered South African to double check that their voting paper is stamped at the back, otherwise their vote does not count. tame TIMES asked Clr Dennis Jane to clarify the issue. Below is his response:Each party appoints up to two agents whose responsibility it is to monitor IEC official’s activities in the polling station. Once the voter’s status has been verified, they move to the table where the ballot papers are issued. When working correctly, the official should only stamp the back of the ballot paper immediately prior to handing it to the voter. What sometimes happens is that the official will stamp a number of ballot papers and distribute them from the pile of stamped ballot papers. This action should be drawn to the presiding officer’s attention and stopped. In my experience, I cannot recall any missing stamps on ballot papers. Spoilt papers certainly, where there has been no party chosen, all chosen or marks where it was not possible to determine what party had in fact been voted for.When the counting of ballot papers commences only IEC officials are permitted

to handle them. After the ballot boxes are emptied on top of tables, all papers are placed face down. The first scrutiny is: do they have the official mark on the back. If yes, they are set aside. Ballots are placed face up and spoilt papers removed then sorted into party piles. The piles are counted (piles of 10 are created) and tallied. This number, together with spoilt ballots total, must be equal to the ballot papers issued during the day. All the while all the party agents have been observing the process and raising issues or agreeing to IEC officials’ actions.If the numbers do not tally, a recount may be demanded. This may only happen where there is a huge discrepancy between ballots issued and counted, or if the two leading parties’ numbers are so close that say the two missing ballots could swing it either way.All the political parties’ agents should be happy with the results and accept that there are two missing ballots (sometimes voters pocket the paper and forfeit their vote). All agents are required to sign a declaration that they are happy with the outcome at their polling station.

To add salt to this wound, three people died in a protest action in that community.The future doesn’t look bright; twelve new Future Education and Training (FET) colleges are planned. But although this is being planned, a growing number of university entrants are unable to cope with the demand of tertiary study thanks to the inferior education they receive at public schools.The bottom-line is that Mr Zuma’s story in nowhere as good as he claims.

Some of the successes quoted in the 2014 State of the Nation include:• The successful nursing of the economy through the global recession• The highest employment statistic in the history of the country• Government has created 3.7 million job opportunities• Infrastructure successes including the Rea Vaya and the Gautrain, which transport no less than 1,2 million people monthly. 300 new heath care facilities and 10 new hospitals• Transformation in the judiciary with Black, Indian and Coloured judges making up 61% of all judges

“As a country we have had many successes. South Africa is a much better place to live in now. We continue to face challenges, but life will continue to change for the better,” said Zuma in his address.There is no doubt that South Africa today is a far better place than it was before the days of democracy, but many critics of the 2014 speech hang desperately onto the fact that although things could look good in the rear-view mirror, what the country needed to hear

Last year we screened 306 children and here are some of the results: - 10,4% of the children had visual acuity of below 6/6 (20/20);- 7,2% of the children had monocular accommodation problems;- 7,5% of the children had convergence problems;- 18 out of the 306 children had very poor distance vision.

The average reading age for the 306 grade 8s were only slightly higher than that of a grade 6 child. As you can see a large number of children have some form of undetected eye problems. Early eye exams are important because children need the following basic skills

related to good eyesight for learning:- Near vision,- Distance vision,- Binocular (two eyes) coordination,- Eye movement skills,- Focusing skills,- Peripheral awareness,- Hand/eye coordination.

Another alarming thing we see during these screenings is many of the children have spectacles but do not wear them, mainly due to the following reasons:- The frames are too small for them;- They are shy or dislike their frames; - Forgot them at home;- The frames are broken.

If your child has glasses or contact lenses, ensure that they wear them and are comfortable with them. Also have your child’s eyes tested at least once every two years to ensure good vision that could aid in improved school performance.

How is your child’s vision?When was the last time you had your child’s vision assessed? And we do not mean can they see on the black board or read, we mean monocular and binocular visual performance. In the past we screened many grade 8s entering high school and found some alarming results. Scooters Pizza Mondeor has a heart for

The SA Sports and V8 Supercars kicked off at Zwartkops this past Saturday. There was a healthy grid that guaranteed action aplenty in both heats. Heading the Supercar V8’s was champion Ben Morgenrood, in the Indy Oil Mustang. He went up against all his old sparring partners, namely Franco di Matteo in his distinctive Varta Batteries Jaguar XKR, father and son duo Larry and Terry Wilford in their Motul Oil/Hot Wheels Corvette and Mustang respectively, and Romano Sartori (AMC Mustang). Mackie Adlem is back in his Jaguar XKR, as is Willie Hepburn in the Corvette. Steve Smith made the trip from Randfontein to do battle in his Mustang, while Clare Vale graced the field with her presence in her RAM Automotive Mustang. Steve Herbst lined up in the bright red Prei Instrumentation Corvette, with youngster Jody von Zummeren back in

the Border Towing Corvette. Another father and son duo Carl and Michael Nel entered the fray, in their Gears for Africa Jaguars. In the Shelby Sports, the long standing commitment to their cause will ensure that names like Rui Campos (Liqui Moly) Alan Eve, Craig Shorter (Trojan Panelbeaters) Andrew Strike (Strike 1 Racing) and Alister Brown were ready to take on their V8 Supercar counterparts. The annual go-cart derby takes place in Walkerville on 8 March from 12:00. This go-cart derby is a bi-annual event to raise funds for the Dare to Dream project. The Dare to Dream project is where over 13 horses have been rescued and are living a fantastic life with thanks to a few dedicated people. The horses are used in various projects to assist abused or orphaned children.This derby is held to raise funds to feed these 13 horses. This event is huge with the Walkerville local community and to be the winner of the coveted trophy is an absolute must on any personal or business shelf. Capetonian Graham filby successfully defended his south african Professional Darts organisation (saPDo) Gauteng national Classic title against eddie Pillay with an 8 - 3

at the Johannesburg Correctional services hall in meredale with over twenty players competing.This was the first time Kimberly-based Pillay reached a SAPDO final.

tame TIMES spoke to Filby on the first day of competing. “I am here

to defend my title and I will be giving 200% to it,” Filby said. Filby explained that the skill of darts is accuracy, focus and steadiness and added that one needs to practise 3 hours per day in a week, and on weekends at least 8 hours.Filby walked away with over R5000 prize money.

the Johannesburg harriers athletic Club ( JhaC) will be hosting its 68th Jackie Gibson marathon and second allan ferguson half-marathon on sunday 30 march. The 2014 race will start at 06:00 and finish at Rietvlei Zoo Farm. The course will meander through

the suburb of Liefde en Vrede and head towards Aspen Estate Nature Reserve. From here runners will head south onto Kliprivier Road and turn right into Swartkoppies Road for a few kilometres. The route turns right into Peggy Vera Road, past Thaba Ya Batswana and the Rand Water Board head office and right onto Klipriver Road. The route passes the Panorama Shopping Centre and onto the bridge at Aspen Estate. Runners then head back through Liefde en Vrede and finish at Rietvlei Zoo Farm. The marathon route repeats this new and exciting course for a second lap, which includes a part of Gordon Road in Kibler Park and back into Impala Road.

I have had the honour of playing with and against some of the best cricketers in the world during my career as a cricket professional, and I could give you a number of players’ names that would challenge the current crop of players. The likes of Clive Rice, Graeme Pollock, Sylvester Clarke and Jimmy Cook from the then “Mean Machine”, to name but a few, as well as the Chappell brother’s, Alan Border, Jeff Thompson, Dennis Lillee and Shane Warne from Australia. Today you have Graeme Smith, AB De Villiers, JP Duminy, Morné Morkel and Dale Steyn, as well as David Warner, Michael Clark, Mitchell Johnson and Shane Watson. Is it fair for me to compare these great players, whom are pretty much thirty years apart? Why not, as the basics of the game have not changed. The only thing you need to consider is that the only difference is that there is so much more money in the game now than the mid-eighties. Money aside, I would arguably say that the ex-Aussie skipper, and now commentator, Alan Border and his fellow players would agree with me in saying that his fellow teammates, as well as Pollock and co, would certainly have stood up to the challenge of the modern game. The old saying of “You can’t buy experience in the supermarket” is so true. Been there, done that and worn the T-Shirt. In an ideal world, I would love to have seen Graeme Pollock smash Mitchell Johnson all over the park and park Warne in the stands.
