We Were Once Slaves in Egypt

Soon we will be celebrating Passover, a time when family and friends gather around the seder table to recount the time when

the Hebrews left Egypt. We eat tra-ditional foods, sing songs we have known since childhood and get tipsy drinking four glasses of wine. I like to remember the seders of my youth. At the table were my immedi-ate family and the families of other Holocaust survivors. Unfortunately, my extended family perished in the war, so the other survivors became my family. We all loved one another and relished our time together.

Were the Hebrews immigrants a people simply choosing to resettle and leave the country of their birth? No, they were forced to leave, they were refugees escaping tyranny. They were slaves without rights, constantly oppressed, forced to flee Egypt.

Bring it to the present day, sit-ting in our comfortable living rooms. Our world is filled with ter-rible places, where people are unable to live in their home country for fear for their lives and the lives of their children. We hear of the sacrifices that refugees and asylees make while trying to find a better life.

Imagine how one feels arriv-ing in San Jose from thousands of miles away, having been vetted by

the State and other federal Depart-ments no less than 25 times, beset by delays related to our nation’s current policies. Exhausted, typically speak-ing little English, arriving in a place they have heard about their whole lives, probably disoriented, relieved to have made it this far. Strangers in a strange land.

JFS SV is proud to serve our local refugee community. As the sole resettlement agency in Santa Clara County, it is our mission to empower individuals and families facing life’s challenges. We welcome new arrivals with open arms as they get a fresh start in America. We teach them vocational English, we provide monetary assistance, food and shel-ter for three months. Most are able to manage on their own relatively quickly; many continue to receive our case management and assistance for years, as needed, as they settle in. I am honored to be a part of an agency where we give people fresh starts and new beginnings.

When we hear of people trying to come to the U.S. from war torn areas, please keep their plight in mind. Put yourself in their shoes because “we were once slaves in Egypt” - we too were refugees. Become part of our volunteer team and help our new arrivals, people who need our help.

I wish you all of you and your families a very happy Passover and a chag sameach!

Joe As the sole resettlement agency in Santa Clara County, it is our

mission to empower individuals and families facing life's challenges.

Executive Director’s Message

Mindy Berkowitz

Bringing Our Community Together

Dear Friends,Periodically

I’m asked, “Who does Jewish Family Services help?” I typically launch into my

explanation that attempts to cover the gamut of services we provide, and the people who benefit from them. Recently our Development Manager Allison Zur, came up with a great idea to make the answer to this question come alive – and thus, Humans of JFS was “born.” We soft-launched the project at Good Morning JFS! and now are bringing it here to you, our supporters, to see more of the faces of JFS. Allie and I would love to know what you think of this project – and if you’d like to be part of it.

What a great morning we had at Good Morning JFS! Along with all the lovely compliments our guests

bestowed upon us, we discovered that this event is a great way to bring the community together. As one person said, “JFS not only helps people, it sparks friendships.” Another told us, "Besides enjoying the event I found and spoke to my boss, an old friend, and a neighbor from 33 years ago! It was like a mini reunion.” Read more about Good Morning JFS! on page 8.

We need your help. JFS is now the only agency resettling refugees in Santa Clara County. We need help finding housing for newly arranged refugee individuals as well as fami-lies. Please call Azita (408) 357-7425 or turn to page 7 for more informa-tion.

Do you need our help? JFS has begun a partnership with Next Door Solutions to Community Violence and is beginning a relationship sup-port group for women who’ve lived with domestic violence. Please call Sandra (408) 357-7457 or turn to

page 6 for more information.Tour JFS – and learn all about

us. Each spring we hold agency tours that we customize to fit your interests. Please call Lori (408) 357-7467 or turn to page 5 for more information.

And finally, I wish you joy during our springtime holiday that commemorates freedom and reminds us that we were strangers in a strange land – and so we must care for others.

Happy Passover, chag Pesach semeach, a zissen Pesach to you!

B’shalom,Mindy

What are you learning?I need to be very respectful and

come with an open ear, no expectations – and no agenda. I let the people I interview steer the conversation. Sometimes it’s really hard because there are topics that are too painful to discuss. Some of the refugees we work with can’t talk about their past because they’re still so scared – and I couldn’t go there. I have to know when to hold back.

Since Good Morning JFS! people have been touched by this program and tell me how they’re realizing that we do more than help refugees and want to support our work in those areas. What messages are you hearing from the Humans of JFS?

I’m learning how appreciative our

clients are. JFS means family to them – that comes up all the time. Also, our clients feel really empowered by telling their stories. If someone wants to be interviewed and photographed, what should they do?

Contact me (408.357.7491 or [email protected]) and we’ll set up a meeting. I will only post something that the person approves.Final thoughts?

Sometimes it’s hard to tell our story in a quick elevator pitch. This is a very personalized taste of what Jewish Family Services does. Each Human of JFS features one quote – but it’s a whole story behind each person. It reminds us that everyone has a story to tell.

JFS Secures Grant for Holocaust Survivors

Through JFS SV’s partnership with JPAC – a California coalition of Jewish organizations that advo-cate for community concerns and broadly shared values – we together helped secure $3.6 million in grants for six Jewish Family Service agen-cies across California – including ours - to provide support for elderly Holocaust Survivors struggling to live out their days in dignity. Over the next two years, with this addi-tional support, we’re going to help local Holocaust survivors even more than we do now.

JFS SV: Repairing Our WorldJFS @ Chai House

Sumi and Merlene enjoy a laugh at Chai House.

The JFS staff team at Chai House is enjoying springtime with the many residents. Our groups - Expressive Arts, Conversation Box, Life Memories, Walking Group, Effective Communications – continue to be highlights.

We also feature workshops such as Communicating with People with Memory Impairment, Applying for Supplemental Food from Second Harvest Food Bank, and Public Safety, that are well-attended and appreciated.

Back by popular demand, later this month, JFS is hosting the Congrega-tion Etz Chaim Mitzvah Singers choir. There will be great snacks and lots of opportunities to sing along.

The JFS office at Chai House is open Monday through Friday and can be reached at (408) 947-7256.

JFS SV Needs Host Families for Temporary Housing Frequently Asked Questions

We resettle refugees who need temporary (1-2 month) housing. These are people who don’t have a U.S. tie. We are hoping that you will open your hearts and homes.

What type of accommodations do they need? They need their own bedroom and bathroom.

Who are these people, and have they been screened? These are recently-arrived refugees from around the world who have gone through rigorous vetting.

Why should I open my home to a stranger? As Jews, we were once strangers in a strange land. The Torah tells us 36 times that we should welcome the stranger.

May I speak with someone who has already hosted? Yes, we will connect you with a current/past host family.

Will I need to do everything for these clients? No, they will be case-managed by JFS SV staff. They will go to JFS for ESL classes and for support to find a job.

Can I be compensated? Yes, we will compensate for your increased utilities.

Do they speak English? In most cases they can communicate with you in English.

What if I have company coming? We will find a place for them to stay temporarily.

Where are they from? All over the world but mostly from Iran and Afghanistan

Will I be trained about what to do? Yes, JFS SV staff will train you.

What will I need to do? Provide a safe place for them to stay upon arrival.

Did you know: JFS SV is the only agency resettling refugees in Santa Clara County.

Are there other ways I can help? Yes, you can become a volunteer driver or mentor, join our housing task force, or contribute toward refugee rent.

If you can help, please contact Azita Eshagh, Refugee Resettlement Coordinator:

[email protected], (408) 357-7457

Good Morning JFS!

Melina and Mindy Berkowitz prepare to take the stage at Good Morning JFS! JFS resettled 6-year-old Melina's family last year. She didn't know a word of English when she arrived; now she is fluent and thriving in school.

Here’s what some of our 375 guests had to say:

“Real people made it real – sign me up to help!”

“We loved having all the kids there.”

“The highlighted JFS recipient is always such a meaningful part of the program. JFS helps such a broad spec-trum of people”

“I was Impressed by the number of people - and how many I knew.”

We’re still counting but our ini-tial results make it clear that once again this was truly our best fund-raiser ever! A heartfelt thank you to our table hosts, sponsors, speakers, volunteers, staff and – of course – our guests for making it the place to be in the morning.

We’re already starting to plan Good Morning JFS! 2020. Contact

JFS leaders Julia Cinnamon, Lori Cinna-mon, and Rich Namm

Allison (408.357.7491 or [email protected]) if you’d like an invitation, or to become a table host or sponsor.
