Role Immersion & Structure Role enactment

Fulfilled through attendance at staff meetings and the JFS Annual Meeting

Task orientation Widespread and discursive. Hard to

articulate my PE-Fit until I gained further entry through socialization.

Socialization into the org culture Becoming a member was a challenge for an

outsider like myself who knew little about Jewish culture and tradition.

Jane Deer-Hileman

Jane is passionately concerned about social justice issues going on in our world today.

Jane faces the organizational challenge of scheduling over 1000 volunteers during peak operations.

Her favorite milestone at JFS was organizing the home holiday gift basket campaign which sends over 100 gifts to local low income clients.

Key Issues

Strengths– Already well organized bureaucratically and has a long list of

volunteers willing to provide community service hours.

– Not outwardly hierarchical. Ambiguous constraints; promotes creativity and room for growth amongst employees and fosters collaboration on projects.

WeaknessesJFS is like an old tortoise: It has a hard outer shell and is slow to move, respond, or adapt strategically to rapidly changing communication environments.

Potential family based impressions/constraints that impose burdens on role engagement.

Recommendations• Stronger crash course to socialize newcomers about

Jewish Culture

• New packets for incoming volunteers or interns that

specialize in the work tasks they will be involved in.

• People need a technology briefing—especially for

social media and blogging.

• Create a Home Care associates work group online.

• Loosen website restrictions on the server as a means

of synchronizing ideology and practice.

Self ReflectionWhat did I learn? – I discovered that I enjoy consulting but prefer

having meetings more then frequently e-mailing• Research is not always about producing reports.• Volunteer hours—worth more than admin hours.• Myers-Briggs Test.

My experience at JFS was flexible but not quite the ideal PE-Fit. But as an intern Social Media briefing and marketing were my strongest points that matched my ENTP personality.
