DESCRIPTION
We invite you to join us for our next auction of Jewelry & Watches on May 2. One highlight of this sale sure to bring a great deal of attention is the Collection of Newport Jewels from the Estate of Julia Sands Chase. The Sands were a prominent naval family, instrumental in making Newport the yachting center it is today. Julia’s great grandfather Dr. Austin Ledyard Sands was an original incorporator on the medical board of the Newport Hospital in 1873. He traveled the world extensively, and died in 1877 in Cairo, Egypt. It was during these trips that Dr. Austin purchased many jewels for his wife Julia in London, as the original receipts that accompany some of jewelry are clearly marked, ‘Mrs. Austin Sands, London 1883-1894’. Included in this prestigious collection are a Belle Époque emerald and diamond stomacher and a pair of natural pearl, diamond, silver and white gold drop earrings.TRANSCRIPT

Freeman’s is proud to present this selection featuring
various private collections, covering a multitude of
periods. We begin our journey through the ages in the late
19th century with the opulence of natural pearls. These
pieces from a Newport, Rhode Island Estate are examples
of jewelry from the turn of the 20th century, and include
an impressive emerald, diamond and platinum stomacher,
and several pieces in natural pearl, which are both
extremely rare and desirable.
As we work through the twentieth century, we arrive at
our next collection formed in the 1960’s and 70’s and
represents pieces from an avid private Gladwyne collector,
Joan Brooks. Numerous pieces of rich 18 karat gold and
diamond in bold heavy designs that stand out as more
than just an accessory, but created to be the highlight
of any fashion scheme. Continuing our journey with
contemporary jewelry is a private collection from
Washington DC, focused on a unique blend of American
and European designers including numerous pieces
from such names as Seaman Schepps, Van Cleef &
Arpels, David Morris and Bulgari.
We complete our tour with the Estate of Janice Wolf
with pieces from the Swiss jeweler Gubelin to Paillonne
bangles by Schlumberger and watches from Patek
Philippe. The crown jewel of her collection is a diamond
riviere with a 5.90 carat internally flawless, fancy yellow
diamond by Graff. Please join us for to celebrate these
collections in our spring Fine Jewelry and Watch auction.

Julia (Sands) Chase hails from a long line of the Sands family of Newport. The Sands were a prominent naval family, and instrumental in makingNewport the yachting center it is today. Julia’s great grandfather, Dr. AustinLedyard Sands, was an original incorporator on the medical board of theNewport Hospital in 1873. He traveled the world extensively, and died in1877 in Cairo, Egypt.
During these trips, Dr. Sands forged relationships with several Oxford StreetLondon jewelers, to many of which Mrs. Sands later returned to purchasejewelry.
Dr. Sands left his fortune to his only son, Frederic Parker Sands, Julia’sgrandfather. Frederic Parker Sands was instrumental in organizing theNewport Yacht Racing fund. He was a charter member and Vice-Commodore of the Rhode Island Yacht Club, Commodore of the WarwickYacht Club, Officer in Charge of the Newport Station number 6 of theWarwick Yacht Club, and organized the Newport Yacht Racing fund. TheSands family has long been identified with Newport, not as summer touristsbut as year round residents.
The following jewels would have been purchased by Mrs. Austin Sands, bequeathed to Frederic, and worn by Mary Sands, Julia’s grandmother, asseen in the images on pages 95 and 103. Mary Sands was married in thefamed Trinity Church in 1905.

Special Notice to Prospective Jewelry BiddersProspective jewelry bidders should exercise caution. Diamonds and gemstones commonly undergo various type of treatments, including but not limited to: heat treatment, irradiation, oiling, bleaching and/or dyeing, resin and/or polymer impregnation, diffusion, fracture filling, laser drilling, high temperature high pressure (a.k.a. HTHP) and coating with wax or other compounds. These represent some of the treatments which are common in the industry and are generally considered acceptable. While Freeman’s endeavors to disclose the most noteworthy of these, many treatments are not listed in the catalog as many gemstones are regularly treated with one or more of these treatment or enhancements.
Therefore we would like to remind all prospective buyers that unless otherwise noted in the catalog, the buyer should assume that one or more of these treatments is present in the described gem material and may or may not be permanent or detectable. When Freeman’s has obtained additional information from a reputable, recognized laboratory or external source, we will commonly include the findings in our catalog description as additional information to prospective buyers.
Various laboratories exist for these types of reports and findings may or may not be in agreeance with each other. Therefore, Freeman’s makes no guarantees as to the accuracy or consistency of these reports and/or findings, but rather we provide this information to our clients in order to assist them in making determinations for bidding purposes.
Special Notice to Perspective Watch and Clock BiddersProspective watch and timepiece bidders should exercise caution. While Freeman’s offers a short description of the piece, the catalog notes and condition reports are not intended to be a complete analysis of the condition of any watch or timepiece. All watches and timepieces offered at auction are often of age and have received much wear during their lifetime. All watches and timepieces are to be sold in ‘as is’ condition and we encourage bidders to evaluate the piece in person prior to bidding.
Special Notice to BiddersPlease note that all items illustrated are not life size.
CitesSome materials such as coral, shell, horn and bone (to name a few) are subject to import/export regulations in compliance with CITES . Items containing a material listed under CITES protection may require additional licenses or be banned completely from import or export to and from the US and other countries.
BurmaIn accordance with the current US restrictions, import into the US of materials which originated from Burma during the tenure of this restriction (most notably jade and ruby) is not permitted.
In either of these above mentioned cases concerning CITES, Burmese or any restricted material, it is the responsibility of the buyer to obtain any necessary licenses or documentation that is required to ship any materials that fall under these legal restrictions. Failure to obtain permission or licenses to import or export items purchased at auction does not justify cancellation of sale or delay in payment settlement.
Lots marked * are manufactured in whole or in part of restricted materials that may include tortoiseshell, ivory, mother-of-pearl, coral, rhinoceros horn, whalebone or marine ivory.
