Background InformationJessie j (Jessica Cornish) is an English singer and song writer who was born and raised in London and her genre of music is R&B/ Pop. She studied at BRIT school and before she became a famous singing artist herself she signed with Gut records which became bankrupt before any material was released. Then she got a song writing deal with Sony/ATV Music publishing where she wrote for very famous artists such as Chris Brown and Miley Cyrus. Jessie J was signed for four years before her first video was posted on YouTube.

As an artist Jessie J describes herself as “half artist and half therapist.” This is due to her wanting all of her songs to be very inspirational and relating to young people and she wants to been seen as a positive role model for young people.

Jessie J then signed with a major record label Universal which lead her to fame with her debut single “Do it like a dude” which hit number 2 in the UK charts and made the charts in 19 other countries. Other songs such as ”Price Tag” also hit the charts in several countries from her album Who you are which was released in 2011. Jessie is the first British female artist to have six top ten singles on one album.Since Jessie started she has gone on to write her second album which will be released in 2013 and has served as coach and mentor on the TV show The Voice. Jessie has always done world tours and headlined at festivals such as Glastonbury and created a new image for herself by shaving her head for charity on Red nose day 2013.

Website

Page 4: Jessie j presentation

As soon as you enter the Jessie J official website it comes up with a logo from her new single “Wild.” This shows immediate advertisement for her new music and image straight away as it is very bold and big for everyone who enters the page to see straight away.As you drag the mouse to enter the sights

home page it comes up with four links to each letter of the title “wild” which include quotes from Jessie J and behind the scene videos. This shows that Jessie is very keen on connecting with her fans and wants to be very person with them by sharing as much as she cant to keep them posted on what is going on in her life and her new music. Also this shows that she is trying in as many ways as possible to promote her new music.

The over all look and feel of the first page of the site is very soft and warming due to white and gold colours used making it seem quite innocent and girly especially because of the curled feminine typography used. Also you can see that Jessie J is also very much about her image because of the multiple images of her posted all over the logo on the first page posing.

Page 5: Jessie j presentation

When you reach the home page of the website the over look and feel of it changes as the colours become more dark and bold which make it stand out a lot more. As she is wearing very dark makeup this could show that her songs may be quite dark also reflecting what type of music she has.

Jessie J is shown with her hair in these images whereas on the previous page it had her more recent look of her with her shaved head. This shows her different styles and looks are important to her as an artist. Spaces where people

can sign up are shown showing again it is important for fans to get involved as much as possible.

It appears that Jessie J’s main target audience would be young teenage girls due to the feminine typography.

Page 6: Jessie j presentation

Other pages in the website include things such as areas where fans can buy merchandise and tickets for her concerts. The other pages also show that her main target audience may be teenage girls as it is all very feminine such as the pink love heart backgrounds and curled gold typography.

Different images of Jessie J are shown in multiple places all over the website along with videos of her and her music videos. Again this shows she is a lot about her image and the way she looks as a main selling point for her music as they are presented very bold and clear so people do not miss them.

Pages dedicated to part of her biography and a gallery showing images from her instagram again make it seem as if she is very involved with her fans and wants them to know and see as much as they can. Also showing she wants to be very open and personal with her fans showing she cares more just about her music but her image and how she is perceived.

Album artworkThe front of Jessie J’s album "Who you are” shows an image of her taking up most of the room on the cover. She is shown in all black including makeup and clothing, this contrasts with the pure white background making her stand out a lot more and making her look very bold and centre of attention. This shows her genre of music is possibly R&B as it is very dark but the Gold writing makes it more feminine which appeals to a young female audience. The gold typography also makes Jessie J’s music seem as if it is R&B and pop because it has a metallic look to it and the curls in the text make it more subtle.

On the back of the album is where the albums song titles are shown. Here they are shown in a more simple subtle way to what the front cover looks like as they are written in a smaller simpler font and colour. The black writing makes the titles stand out more from the white background again like the front cover. As the song titles are presented in a much more simpler way then the image of Jessie on the front this could show that her image is much more important then the music itself as she is more concerned with people noticing her appearance then her music.

The art work on the CD in side the album case is quite a different style to the case. Although the font is the same the colour has changed to a light pink which makes it seem more soft. This also hints of who the target audience is again (young teenage girls) as pink indicates feminine things also the love heart drawn on targets a younger audience and also shows signs of possibly love songs again showing the genre of pop as they usually involve love.

Album promotion

The image used to promote Jessie J’s album is the same from her album cover which makes it easier for people to recognise and then go on to buy. Mentions on the poster of other artists that star in her songs in the album such as B.O.B and David Guetta have been made clear to people to possibly attract different/more audiences from the other artists.

Music Video

The first song on Jessie J’s album “Who you are” is “Price tag feat B.O.B” where they are trying to give off the message that money does not matter and you can still be happy without it. She shows this in a quirky happy way by using lots of bright colours and lively costumes.

Page 10: Jessie j presentation

Jessie J is shown as the main person in the music video acting out a role as if she is a child again. At the beginning of the video it shows a little girl that looks like her turning into her.

The baby pink pastel colour of the background makes the video seem very childlike and girly also, creating a happy warm vibe for the viewer.

Other things such as her being shown on a chair that’s too big for her and a child's bike indicate that she is supposed to be a child again as she is being represented as one by being shown as the size of a child in comparison to the chair and the teddy bear at the beginning. Also she is shown in a dolls house representing childlike behaviour and toys along with the broken doll head she is holding. This might all be shown to emphasise “its not about the money” as when you are a child money does not matter and is not a worry for you.

A lot of wide angle and establishing shots are used to show the viewer everything that is going on in the clip and the scale of the props used. Also close up shots are used at times to show detail such as Jessie J’s makeup and outfit which shows she is still about her image and wants everyone to see what she is wearing and what she looks like.

The artist featured in the song B.O.B is also shown in a child like way by standing next to a toy car that has been blown up to a larger scale to give the impression that it is a real car. He is also shown standing amongst toy soldiers reflecting a boys childhood.

In this video scale seems to be a key aspect as it has been changed a lot to give of different impressions of certain objects.

The baby blue pastel colour of the background again makes the video seem very soft and light hearted also childlike.

The lighting of the video through out is very bright creating again a happy positive feel for the audience emphasising the genre (pop) of the song as it is cheery and loving. It also emphasises the message of the song that you should be happy even if you do not have money.

Page 12: Jessie j presentation

A clip from Jessie’s first video “Do it like a dude” is briefly shown and as it is she is referred to as a “video hoe” showing already how much her image has changed between the two videos making her seem like she changes her look regularly which is also shown through this video alone by her several costume changes. This could be seen as intertextual reference to her other music video.

Jessie J is shown as a puppet being controlled by string, this may indicate that she is being controlled by the music industry and being conformed into something the music industry want to see.

Also she is shown standing on a music box also as if she is being controlled, again indicating that she has no control and is being made into someone/something different then she actually is.

Page 13: Jessie j presentation

The message in this video is that money does not matter. This is shown by Jessie dancing under a tree made of money and shown tearing a big money tag in half.

But the lyrics contradict a lot with what is being shown as Jessie is dressed up in nice clothing and has her hair and makeup done perfectly as she is saying you do not need that stuff to be happy. She sings “its not about the bling” as she is shown wearing big bold jewellery and shows it off multiple times through out the video. She also contradicts herself when she says “heels so high you can’t even have a good time” as she is shown wearing really high heels herself. This could show that it is possibly an act to not care about what she is wearing when she clearly does as she wears several different nice outfits throughout.

Goodwin's analysis

The demands of the record label will include the need for lots of close ups of the artist. There are many close ups of Jessie through this music video.

There is a relationship between lyrics and visuals. “Why is everybody so serious?” There are men shown dressed in suits to look serious.

“Forget about the price tag” Jessie is shown holding a price tag then tears it in half as if she doesn’t care about it.

There is frequently reference to notion of looking and particularly voyeuristic treatment of the female body. Through out the video Jessie J is wearing tight fitted body suits which show off her body along with other girls in the video wearing short revealing clothing.

There is a relationship between music and visuals The music is very upbeat and soft which relates to the visuals as everything shown is also very soft and upbeat such as the colours of the background and the children's toys shown.

Cross Media conclusion

Over all you can see that Jessie J is an artist that very much cares about her image as well as the message her music gives although they may often contradict with one another. Her image is her icon that has lead her to be as successful as she is as it is so unique and different to a lot of other artists that also create music from the pop/ R&B genre so it has caught peoples attention. Her image has remained similar throughout her album cover and her music videos as she remains to wear bold bright colour’s to stand out along with her hair and makeup.
