Step 1: Existing Cabins

- Falling apart- Hard to maintain- Hot and uncomfortable- Only houses four girls- Eroding foundation

ProcessofDesign

Step 2: Individual Design

- Add color- Develop relationship to the ground- Structure in the works- Corners can be improved- Budget undetermined- Create an indoor/outdoor relationship- Maximum ventilation

Step 3: Begin Group Work

- Developing roof structure- Reworking layout- Developing interior structure- Eliminating dead spaces

Step 4: Presentation

- Create a roof and wall relationship- Maximize profitability- Increase uniqueness- Develop budget

A design is never finished, for it is the work of refinement on a set of principles. Design takes the existing and creates something better - something new. My original concept for the Camp Daisy Cabin held to the ideas of social connection, adaptability, and a connection to the natural world. Though the design grew throughout the transition from individual design to group design, the principles always remained as the founding blocks of the idea.

What's Up With Seaton Hall?

Seaton Hall, the home of the Kansas State University College of Architecture, Planning & Design, fails to adequately provide an enriching work environment for students, and inadequately represents the prestigious academic program.

Individual Vs. Group Design

This studio provided and opportunity to work in groups of five people (four fourth-year students and one fifth year mentor) and learn how to design corroboratively. We worked in tandem on every element of the project and learned to delegate work, compromise ideas, and stand behind one another

What is the D.E.A.C.? What Features Are There? How Does the Trellis Work?

Page 32: Jessica Symons Portfolio

Living Wall

The use of a sheltering trellis decorated in vegetation and life provides both beauty and functionality to the D.E.A.C. The edible elements can be grown, harvested, and sold to provide jobs and revenue for struggling members. The green wall also provides a symbolic element of life, hope, rebirth, and

Page 38: Jessica Symons Portfolio

Worship spaces are unique to individuals, however all must evoke a sense of serenity and unity with God. A connection with nature and the landscape influences the design in this way.

A long waterfalll makes up the roof of the central corridor of the lower spaces. This underwater atmosphere provides a serence reflective space that filters the light into spiritual plays of color and ambience.

The waterfall symbolizes cleansing such as that of baptism, or a washing to make pure such as repentance.

Wall Analytic Section

A tectonic look at the connection displayed in the 3D wall analytic which displays construction document information on wall materials and thickensses and cable structure.

3D Wall Analytic

Analyzation of a key connection segment in which the waterfall roof plane interacts with the upper walkway and lower corridor using tension cables.

Learning Construction

The Catholic Worship Center became my first introduction to construction documents. I learned how to detail connections and combine matierals together.
