DESCRIPTION
4 page feature on The Atlantic Hotel's annual refurbishment.TRANSCRIPT
THE Atlantic Hotel’s breathtakingviews across St Ouen’s Bay,renowned Michelin-starred
restaurant and stylish design make it afavourite with both visitors andIslanders. The luxury hotel adjoining La Moye
Golf Course is fully equipped withexcellent facilities, including heatedswimming pools, a health club andtennis court, and is set on beautifulgrounds which extend for six acres. Its restrained 1930s art deco style
seamlessly blends the traditional andthe contemporary to create an elegantyet warm and inviting feel. However, in many ways what sets
the hotel apart is the attention paid toeven the smallest details and theimpeccable standards set to ensureguests have the best possibleexperience. An on-going programme of
investment means that improvementsare continually being made, while thehotel is also closed for one monthevery year to undergo a completerejuvenation.During that time, local contractors
work tirelessly to service, clean andmaintain everything in the hotelincluding chandeliers, rugs andfurniture.Managing director Patrick Burke said
that it was very unusual these days fora hotel of this standard to ceaseoperating for a whole month. He said: ‘You literally have to take the
hotel apart, clean it, and put it back
together again and you need to knowyour building very well indeed to dothat.‘One of the reasons we can do it is
because we have built up a team ofreally excellent craftsmen, tradesmenand contractors who come in eachJanuary to work with us, including
many who have been doing this withus for 20 or 30 years.‘Whether they are furniture polishers,
decorators or electricians theyunderstand the building very well andwithout them we couldn’t do it.‘We’re just one small hotel, but more
than 25 local firms worked on the

Atlantic Hotelat the summitproject. That means that we’reactually able to put back into thelocal economy, and I think that’s veryimportant as well.’The contractors this year included
businesses such as FosseConstruction, Bryce Robinsonpainters and decorators, FreshFloors, electrician Derek Morin, garden contractors CA Frazier, furniture specialistsWhittinghams,Clean Guard, Jet Blast, Islandscape,Drain It, plumbers JohnWarrener,The Sigma Group and the IslandFire Extinguisher Company.Constantly striving to reach the
highest standards is a major priorityfor the team at The Atlantic, particularly Mr Burke, whose father,Henry, established the hotel in 1970.‘One of the things that is quite
unusual about The Atlantic is that weare a family-owned and run hotel,’ hesaid.‘Years ago nearly all hotels were
owned and run by families, but thesedays it’s surprisingly unusual, particularly for hotels at the top endof the market like The Atlantic.‘That means that we care very
deeply about the property, as it hasbeen in the family a long time.’That dedication is reflected in the
impressive number of accoladesbestowed on the hotel over theyears, including the maintenance ofa Michelin star for its Ocean

Restaurant since 2007.Executive head chef Mark Jordan oversees
the menus and food preparation at therestaurant, which is one of several rooms at thehotel available for fine dining, weddings andconferences. In addition, The Atlantic is the only local
member of Small Luxury Hotels of theWorld –an exclusive collection of the very bestindependent hotels from around the world –and it holds four AA red stars and four AArosettes.Only a handful of hotels in the country have
been awarded both of those prestigiousratings.Just last month, the property was selected
among the UK’s finest in the TripAdvisor 2013Travellers’ Choice Hotel Awards after travellersranked it the 15th best hotel in the country.Late last year, The Atlantic was also crowned
winner of the Most ExcellentWaterside Hotelaward in the prestigious Condé NastJohansens UK and Ireland Awards forExcellence 2013.‘The hotel has a very special standing in the
marketplace,’Mr Burke said.‘Jersey as a destination is a niche
destination, certainly in international tourismterms, and TheAtlantic is a unique offering inthe Jersey marketplace.’Mr Burke joined the family business in 1985
and succeeded his father as managing directorin 1987.
Since then, an annual investment of about£250,000 has ensured that the property hasretained its position as one of Jersey’s finesthotels. There are two main projects being
undertaken this year. The first is the refurbishment of the golf
course-facing side of the property, which willsee all of the balconies dismantled, cleaned, redecorated and then reassembled. The second is the creation of a prototype
bedroom, which has seen one guest roomstripped bare so that it can be used to testideas for a planned refurbishment.Once the perfect formula has been found, all
50 rooms in the hotel will be refurbished instages.Mr Burke said that improvements being
considered included new energy-efficiencyprovisions, brand new fabrics and theinstallation of oak flooring to create continuitythroughout the hotel.‘This is about the hotel evolving,’ he said.
‘Some of the furniture here is really beautiful,so it will be restored and the upholsteryrenewed.‘Where we have something that’s good we
don’t want to change it, we just want to take itforward.’There will be a renewed emphasis on
technology, with wall-mounted flat screentelevisions and possibly even a fully inclusiveSky service in every bedroom.‘We have the opportunity to keep pushing

the boundaries of what we offer our guests,’MrBurke said.Aside from the property, the most important
investment The Atlantic makes is in its staff, such as reservations manager HayleyBrockwell who last year celebrated 30 years ofservice.
In summer, up to 60 people are employed atthe hotel, many of whom are locally born orqualified.‘We make a particular effort to take on local
people when recruiting,’Mr Burke said.‘We have an absolutely fabulous team of
staff, many of whom have worked for the familyfor years and years and years. They achievegreat things.‘It’s all about the experience of the guests
when they come here. The hotel has a magicalposition overlooking St Ouen’s Bay and it isfamily-owned, which I think gives it a certaincivility, but really it’s all about the staff.
‘At the end of the day, hotels are actuallymade by people – the people running them, the people who work in them, and the peoplewho stay in them.‘So much of our success is down to our
team.’
