personal growth to his employees. It is a legacy in the making. Mr. Townes offers a word of advice to

DBEs and small business alike. “Owning a business can be hard but you have to learn to persevere

because you are not only making an impact in your life but others as well. In the end it is rewarding,”

Sergeant Schedule Software

Sergeant Schedule is a cloud-based field service solution that happens to be merged with

Google Maps. Key features include staff scheduling, time clock and payroll, smartphone

interface and integration with Google Maps to provide project mapping.

Sergeant Schedule’s project mapping function allows users to move staff around on a visual

daily scheduler. Users can view staff daily projects, estimates for future work and completed

jobs on the map. This software also includes a “map drawing” feature, where users can

include color-coded notes for different assignments.

The system’s staff time clock function lets staff log hours from anywhere. They can also make

comments from the job site and post pictures. In the map via, staff members see only their

own assignments.

Sergeant Software also includes billing and invoicing, scheduling and dispatch, contact

management and work order management applications.

This system is either licensed per user or priced on a per user per month subscription basis.

Sergeant Schedule offers in-person training for all users and online video tutorials.

Work place safety is important no matter where you work. However, in the construction industry, workers are

susceptible to injuries. Below are a few tips on scaffolding safety.

Hazard: When scaffolds are not erected or used properly, fall hazards can occur. About 2.3 million construction

workers frequently work on scaffolds. Protecting these workers from scaffold-related accidents would prevent an

estimated 4,500 injuries and 50 fatalities each year.

Solutions:

A scaffold must be sound, rigid and sufficient to carry its own weight plus four times the maximum intended load without settling or displacement. It must be erected on solid footing.

Unstable objects, such as barrels, boxes, loose bricks or concrete blocks must not be used to support scaffolds or planks.

Scaffolds must not be erected, moved, dismantled or altered except under the supervision of a competent person.

Scaffolds must be equipped with guardrails, midrails and toeboards.

Scaffold accessories such as braces, brackets, trusses, screw legs or ladders that are damaged or weakened from any cause must be immediately repaired or replaced.

Scaffold platforms must be tightly planked with scaffold plank grade material or equivalent.

A "competent person" must inspect the scaffolding and, at designated intervals, reinspect it.

Rigging on suspension scaffolds must be inspected by a competent person before each shift and after any occurrence that could affect structural integrity to ensure that all connections are tight and that no damage to the rigging has occurred since its last use.

Synthetic and natural rope used in suspension scaffolding must be protected from heat-producing sources.

Employees must be instructed about the hazards of using diagonal braces as fall protection.

Scaffold can be accessed by using ladders and stairwells.

Scaffolds must be at least 10 feet from electric power lines at all times.

Public Wi-Fi is available just about everywhere, from the local coffee shop to the hotels and airports you visit while traveling. Wi-Fi has made our lives a little easier, but it also poses security risks to the personal information available on our laptops and smartphones. Here is a helpful list of dos and don’ts you should follow if you plan to use public Wi-Fi.

Two Types of Public Wi-Fi

There are basically two kinds of public Wi-Fi networks: secured and unsecured. An unsecured network can be connected to within range and without any type of security feature like a password or login. Conversely, a secured network requires a user to agree to legal terms, register an account, or type in a password before connecting to the network. It may also require a fee or store purchase to gain access to the password or network.

Regardless of the connection type, you should always use public Wi-Fi with caution. Now let’s look at some dos and don’ts:

Do connect to secured public networks whenever possible. In the event that you’re unable to connect to a secured network, using an unsecured network would be permissible if the connection requires some sort of login or registration.

Don’t access personal bank accounts, or sensitive personal data, on unsecured public networks. Even secured networks can be risky. Use your best judgment if you must access these accounts on public Wi-Fi.

Don’t leave your laptop, tablet, or smartphone unattended in a public place. Even if you’re working on a secure Wi-Fi network, that won’t stop someone from taking your property or sneaking a peek at your device.

Don’t shop online when using public Wi-Fi. Sure, shopping doesn’t seem like it involves sensitive data, but making purchases online requires personal information that could include bank account and retailer login credentials. Shopping isn’t something you want to do on an unsecured Wi-Fi network.

Do turn off automatic connectivity. Most smartphones, laptops, and tablets have automatic connectivity settings, which allow you to seamlessly connect from one hotspot to the next. This is a convenient feature, but it can also connect your devices to networks you ordinarily would not use. Keep these settings turned off, especially when you’re traveling to unfamiliar places.

Do monitor your Bluetooth connectivity. Bluetooth in the home is an amazing feature on many smart devices. However, leaving Bluetooth on while in public places can pose a huge risk to your cybersecurity. Bluetooth connectivity allows various devices to communicate with each other, and a hacker can look for open Bluetooth signals to gain access to your devices. Keep this function on your phone and other devices locked down when you leave your home, office, or similar secured area.

Do think about using a virtual private network (VPN) solution to ensure your privacy and anonymity are protected when you use public Wi-Fi. VPN services can encrypt all the data that you send and receive while using a public Wi-Fi hotspot, securing your information from other users of the same connection.

Want to know more about the dangers of using public Wi-Fi, and how to protect your private information on public hotspots? Contact Systems IT, Inc. 1855 Lakeland Drive, Suite R-101, Jackson, MS 39216, 601-914-4550 or email [email protected] for training opportunities.
