6. Recognition of Pegasus - Top Ten Student Literacy Magazine in New York State
Dan Salzman, Language Arts Curriculum Associate and Dr. Michael Hartnett introduced the students listed on the attached and congratulated them for their work on the Pegasus which was recognized as a Top 10 Literary Magazine in New York State.

III. Reports/Discussion
1. Discussion of Potential of Adding Eid and Diwali to Future School Calendars A lengthy discussion of adding Eid and Diwali as official school district holidays was held and parents and community members offered both their support and concerns. Several people read prepared statements, which are attached.
The challenge in including those holidays in the district calendar, while maintaining Jericho’s 186-day calendar, was discussed. The Board said they would not rush to a decision and they will continue the discussion. Anyone not able to attend, but interested in voicing their opinion, should email the Board of Education at [email protected]

2. Budget Workshop #2 - PPS Update Codes: 2250, 2610, 2810, 2815, 2820, 2825,
2850, 2855 Victor Manuel, Assistant Superintendent for Business Affairs presented second Budget
Workshop for the 2017-18 school year. John Castronova, Pupil Personnel Director, Kim Conger, PPS K-5 Curriculum Associate and Joseph Sapienza PPS 6-12 Curriculum Associate provided an update on Pupil Personnel Services. Questions from the Board and the community were addressed.

The enrollment as of February 3, 2017 was 3,066 students.
Mr. Grishman stated that plans are in the works to create a group to increase community connections and the district will spearhead this later this spring.
Mr. Grishman said that he received a call from the New York State Commissioner of Education’s office stating that, by Federal mandate, Jericho must administer the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) test to a select group of eighth grade students. If the district continues not to participate, the district would jeopardize our Federal Title Funds, which is approximately $300,000. The district is only responsible for offering the tests to be in compliance. Parents can decide if they

want their child to take the tests, which are not linked to the child’s permanent record. Don Gately will communicate with impacted students/parents directly.

5. Inter-Municipal Cooperative Agreement for Special Education Services WHEREAS, a number of public school districts in Nassau County wish to jointly solicit proposals for Special Education Related Services for the 2017-2018 school year (and any renewal period) in accordance with the applicable provisions of General Municipal Law; WHEREAS, the School District, is desirous of participating with these school districts for the joint solicitation of proposals for Special Education Related Services as authorized by General Municipal Law, Section 119-0 in accordance with the terms and conditions of an Inter-Municipal Cooperative Agreement to be approved by District legal counsel; and, WHEREAS, the Board of Education has determined that it would be in its best financial interest to procure Special Education Related Services on a cooperative basis; NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Education hereby authorizes the School District to participate with the other Nassau County public school districts for the solicitation of proposals for Special Education Related Services on a cooperative basis subject to the terms and conditions of an Inter-Municipal Cooperative Agreement to be approved by District legal counsel; BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Board of Education hereby authorizes the Board President to execute the necessary documents to effectuate said Inter- Municipal Cooperative Agreement on behalf of the Board of Education.

RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING ASSIGNMENT WHEREAS, on July 2, 2015, the Board of Education entered into an agreement with Pook Diemont & Ohl, Inc. to perform auditorium renovations at Jericho Middle School and Jericho High School; and WHEREAS, Pook Diemont & Ohl, Inc. has notified the Board of Education that it has been acquired by Texas Scenic Company, Inc. and has requested that its agreement be assigned to Texas Scenic Company, Inc.; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Education hereby agrees to the assignment of its agreement with Pook Diemont & Ohl, Inc.. to Texas Scenic Company, Inc. in accordance with the annexed written assignment; and BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Board of Education hereby authorizes the Board President to execute said Assignment of Agreement.

Hello my name is Dario Hassankhani. And I am an 8th grade Student Council Representative. The Social and Emotional Literacy Theme for the month of February is love. According to H. Stanley, “Being thankful needs to become a way of life that demonstrates the highest expression of respect and love for one self and others through expressions of love, respect and appreciation…” A person’s words will always express what has been treasured in his heart. On Friday, January 27th the 7th and 8th grade students participated in an exciting project called Jericho History Day. Students presented projects throughout the day. Project History Day is a non-profit education organization which engages students annually in conducting and presenting original research on an historical topic. Students chose a historical topic related to this year’s theme: Taking a Stand, and then conducted primary and secondary research. It was a wonderful day. We had 27 finalists who will compete at Hofstra. All finalists from the Hofstra Competition will participate in a state level competition. Good luck Jericho! We will be celebrating our 10th Annual Personal Best Assembly Day tomorrow! This program encourages and supports the Social and Emotional Literacy Development of our students. To celebrate, we have an assembly where faculty and staff share inspirational stories with students. In addition, Rohan Murphy will be our special guest. Mr. Murphy is a nationally recognized youth speaker that has spoken in over 40 states. Rohan, who lost his legs at birth, started to wrestle his freshman year of high school. After a successful career he went on to wrestle at Penn State University. In addition, to wrestling, Rohan is also an accomplished powerlifter, competing in international competitions all over the world representing the United States. Mr. Rohan will speak to our students about perseverance, grit and rising above negative perceptions.
On Monday, February 13th the 6th, 7th and 8th grade Student Leadership Group sponsored the 7th Annual CUPCAKE WAR!! The proceeds will benefit the PROJECT PICTURE DAY organization. Project Picture Day will provide support for children in Haiti whose school was severely damaged as a result of the devastation from Hurricane Matthew in October. The school building lost the roof over the 6th grade and did not have the money to repair it. This meant that school no longer offers 6th grade. Students that lost shoes and uniforms in the hurricane no longer can attend school. With our help, these students will receive school photos for the first time in their lives! In addition, the monies raised will be used to provide school supplies, shoes and uniforms for the children. The 5th Annual Ski Trip to Jiminy Peak is scheduled for Saturday, March 4th. All middle school students and their families are invited to come. An email was sent home to parents, so if they haven’t mentioned it, make sure to ask them about it or speak to Ms. Adler for more details and how to register. Registration ends tomorrow! The MS School Store will be open tomorrow. We will be selling Middle School SPIRIT WEAR! This includes T-shirts, blankets, hats, assorted cups; swell bottles, lunch bags and jewelry! We can’t wait! Congratulations Archana Verma, Nathaniel Lee, and their advisor, Serena McCalla on being named finalists in the Regeneron Competition. Congratulations to our Nassau County Chess Champions, Andrew Chen, William Hu, Wesley Wang, Evelynn Zhu, Brian Fong, Oliver Liu, Ernest Wang, Warren Wang, Johnny Wu, and their advisors Paul Bode and Matthew DeMarinis. Congratulations Mutahara Bhuiyan, Caroline Chen, Molly Schwartz, Amanda Luong, and their advisor Dr. Michael Hartnett for being selected as Top 10 Literary Magazine Pegasus winners.
Last month, PTA Council sponsored a district-wide event with John Hildebrand, senior Education Reporter for Newsday. Parents and staff enjoyed learning about the publishing process. We also discussed current issues in education policy in New York State and nationally.
Earlier this week Council leaders were part of a discussion with Dr. Eric Sundberg. He shared with us information on the new social studies standards as well as exciting new programs like Jericho History Day. It was a great opportunity for us to learn what and how students are learning about history in our schools. Thank you Dr. Sundberg for your presentation.
Next month, on March 27, Open Council will feature a program with the Jericho Wellness Coalition. This meeting will not be at Jackson as noted on the calendar. It will take place at the Middle School Library. All parents and staff are welcome. We hope you will join us.

Good evening everyone, I would like to begin by thanking everybody here tonight, especially
our respected Board members and our superintendent, for allowing me to present my thoughts and reasoning behind making Eid an official school holiday.
My name is Hamza Malik and I am in io" Grade; I grew up on Long Island and have been in the Jericho School District since elementary school. I have had a great time growing up in Jericho, and I have made good friends and have been mentored by extraordinary teachers and coaches who have all made my time here at Jericho a most enriching experience. However, I believe, along with many other Muslims in the community, that our experience at Jericho would be even greater if the school were to observe Eid-ul Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha as official school holidays. Throughout the years, many of us have had to miss school for religious reasons on those days, which not only puts stress on the students to make up the work they have missed, but also on the teachers to gather the assignments and re-teach the students any material they missed. As my grade president, I have been in touch with other students who share my sentiments and fully support this initiative. We are hopeful that Jericho will resolve to join the other Long Island districts that have already affirmed their commitment to diversity.
I believe that recognizing the two Eids as official school holidays will not only help the many Muslim students and families keep up with the work, but will also give other students an understanding of our culture and religion, as I have about theirs. I have been asked countless times by my peers why I miss school on those days and they always seem interested to learn more about my culture and my religion. Moreover, such a move will send a clear message about our core values here at Jericho, which have always been about embracing diversity and standing up for each other. The Muslim community believes that the community ofJericho as a whole would be more understanding of each other, creating a more tolerant and inclusive community for everyone. Thank you.
Eid Holiday Initiative Speech Shewar Khan
Good evening everyone. My name is Shewar Khan and I'm a Cantiague parent and also co-VP of the PTA Executive Board. I have a 5th grader, Rohail, who you heard last month as part of the student leader presentation and a 3rd grader, Zoya, both of whose presence here makes this presentation all the more special for me.
I'd like to start by thanking you for giving us the opportunity today, to present the request to add the Eid holidays to the district calendar. We are privileged to be part ofthis diverse, inclusive district, one in which my children not only feel integrated but are truly happy and inspired every single day.
We have come to you as a community today, to talk a little bit about the significance of the Eid holidays and what they mean to the billion Musl ims around the world and especially about what they mean to our kids. Truth be told however, while we may observe different traditions during these holidays, at the core, we are really just here as parents. Parents, like all of you, who want the best for their children. Parents who want their kids in school as many days as is humanly possible (!l but parents who also want their children to be able to celebrate these special occasions with their families without the fear of missing a test or having to make up school work. Perhaps, most of all, we are here as parents who want their children to feel included when they are wished "Happy Holidays" by their friends.
The importance of inclusion is something we can all attest to. We feel the need for it when we interact with our colleagues at work, see the need for it with friends and even strangers on social media and above all recognize the need for it in our children's interactions with their friends and teachers at school. It is in this very spirit of inclusion that I chose to volunteer for the PTA Executive Board. Well, aside from the fact that my kids practically begged me to! f felt that it set a good example for them, teaching them to value their community, to give back whenever possible and to make decisions that represent everyone, that give a voice to everyone. We are merely requesting the same from you today - to make a decision that will create awareness and inclusion, benefitting all our children, not just the
Muslim ones, to set the tone for the rest of the Island, as you do in so many ways already, by showing that Jericho stands for diversity, that its core value is one of inclusion.
I would like to end with the fact that my husband and I came to Jericho in 2011 based on rankings but stayed because it 's so, so much more than that. It 's where we first learnt to be bucket fillers, where Rohail was encouraged to pursue his passion and start a Rubik's Cube recess club, where Zoya developed passionsfor singing and soccer, where my 2 year old recognizes a picture of Dr. Sinanis even though he no longer works here, where we've made some lifelong friends that I will treasure forever and where I have a voice and this platform to be able to stand here before you to support an initiative that is very dear to my heart.
Good evening! My name is Tala Abukoush and I am a student at JMS. It is
an honor to be here today and I want to thank you for giving me the chance
to speak about the Muslim holiday and how important it is to me.
Please allow me to walk you through that day and what exactly we perform
on this special day. After 30 days of fasting, we have a holiday called the
Eid al-Fitr . Very early in the morning around 6:00 AM, our father gathers us
all up and we go to pray at the mosque. After that, we go visit all of our
relatives to wish them a happy Eid.
As children, we are so excited each year waiting for this holiday to come,
the way other children wait for their own holidays that they celebrate. The
best part of the holiday is that each of us get rewarded with many treats for
the hard work of fasting for 30 days, while not skimping on our homework
assignments or sports commitments. I would love to celebrate my holiday
without having to worry about skipping a day of school and having to make
up for the work I missed.
This is why I am here today, to join my voice in asking you to officially add
my holiday to the Jericho school calendar to stand as a day off from school.
Thank you very much for your time and I hope you take into consideration
my humble request.
Good Evening Mr. Grishman, Esteemed Board Members, Administrators,
Teachers, Parents and Students of the Jericho Community,
We want to thank you for allowing us the opportunity to stand before you
to respectfully request the addition of the two major Muslim Eid holidays, Eid Al
Fitr and Eid Al-Adha, and the Hindu and Sikh holiday ofDiwali to our official
school calendar. Tonight, we come together as educators, parents and students, to
discuss the importance of recognizing the diverse groups that make up Jericho's
distinct community.
My name is Zeina Sayegh Safa; four years ago, my husband and I
moved to Jericho. Like everyone else, we came to Jericho schools already aware of
the superior quality of a Jericho education and the wonderful opportunities that
await our three children. What we did not know at the time was how diverse the
community has grown over the years, a vibrant tapestry of different cultures,
languages and backgrounds, having all gravitated towards this hamlet on Long
Island to call their home, on the one hand, for the obvious reason of seeking the
nationally-ranked Jericho education; on the other hand, because Jericho has done
an exceptional job fostering a tolerant and accepting community.
It is the spirit of this diversity that brings us here today to kindly request
the addition of these three important holy holidays to our official school calendar.
The Muslim community is one of the fastest growing minority groups in the United
States, and it is no coincidence that New York City approved the addition of the
two Muslim holidays, Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha, to their official school
calendar last year, as well as Syosset schools earlier this year. Eid Al-Fitr, the
Festival of Breaking Fast, celebrates the end of Ramadan, the Muslim month of
fasting. Physically capable Muslims observe this holy month by fasting from
sunrise to sunset. Eid Al-Adha, or the Festival of Sacrifice, celebrates the end of
the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, while commemorating Prophet Abraham's
willingness to sacrifice his son Isaac in obedience of God's command, hence the
name of the holiday.
Every Eid, Muslim parents are faced with the tough decision of whether
to keep their children home to celebrate together as a family, or to send them to
school because they do not want them to miss out on important information or
testing. Considering our students' work ethics and high education standards, our
children are reluctant to miss school, even if they have an excused absence due to
religious holidays, because they will have to make up the missed work and risk
falling behind.
We strongly believe that by adding the above holidays, Jericho would
complete the circle of cultural acceptance that it has come to represent. By

Discussion of Potential of Adding Eid and Diwali to Future School Calendars A lengthy discussion of adding Eid and Diwali as official school district holidays was held and parents and community members offered both their support and concerns. Several people read prepared statements, which are attached.
The challenge in including those holidays in the district calendar, while maintaining Jericho’s 186-day calendar, was discussed. The Board said they would not rush to a decision and they will continue the discussion. Anyone not able to attend, but interested in voicing their opinion, should email the Board of Education at [email protected]

2. Budget Workshop #2 - PPS Update Codes: 2250, 2610, 2810, 2815, 2820, 2825,
2850, 2855 Victor Manuel, Assistant Superintendent for Business Affairs presented second Budget
Workshop for the 2017-18 school year. John Castronova, Pupil Personnel Director, Kim Conger, PPS K-5 Curriculum Associate and Joseph Sapienza PPS 6-12 Curriculum Associate provided an update on Pupil Personnel Services. Questions from the Board and the community were addressed.

Mr. Grishman stated that plans are in the works to create a group to increase community connections and the district will spearhead this later this spring.
Mr. Grishman said that he received a call from the New York State Commissioner of Education’s office stating that, by Federal mandate, Jericho must administer the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) test to a select group of eighth grade students. If the district continues not to participate, the district would jeopardize our Federal Title Funds, which is approximately $300,000. The district is only responsible for offering the tests to be in compliance. Parents can decide if they

Hello my name is Dario Hassankhani. And I am an 8th grade Student Council Representative. The Social and Emotional Literacy Theme for the month of February is love. According to H. Stanley, “Being thankful needs to become a way of life that demonstrates the highest expression of respect and love for one self and others through expressions of love, respect and appreciation…” A person’s words will always express what has been treasured in his heart. On Friday, January 27th the 7th and 8th grade students participated in an exciting project called Jericho History Day. Students presented projects throughout the day. Project History Day is a non-profit education organization which engages students annually in conducting and presenting original research on an historical topic. Students chose a historical topic related to this year’s theme: Taking a Stand, and then conducted primary and secondary research. It was a wonderful day. We had 27 finalists who will compete at Hofstra. All finalists from the Hofstra Competition will participate in a state level competition. Good luck Jericho! We will be celebrating our 10th Annual Personal Best Assembly Day tomorrow! This program encourages and supports the Social and Emotional Literacy Development of our students. To celebrate, we have an assembly where faculty and staff share inspirational stories with students. In addition, Rohan Murphy will be our special guest. Mr. Murphy is a nationally recognized youth speaker that has spoken in over 40 states. Rohan, who lost his legs at birth, started to wrestle his freshman year of high school. After a successful career he went on to wrestle at Penn State University. In addition, to wrestling, Rohan is also an accomplished powerlifter, competing in international competitions all over the world representing the United States. Mr. Rohan will speak to our students about perseverance, grit and rising above negative perceptions.
On Monday, February 13th the 6th, 7th and 8th grade Student Leadership Group sponsored the 7th Annual CUPCAKE WAR!! The proceeds will benefit the PROJECT PICTURE DAY organization. Project Picture Day will provide support for children in Haiti whose school was severely damaged as a result of the devastation from Hurricane Matthew in October. The school building lost the roof over the 6th grade and did not have the money to repair it. This meant that school no longer offers 6th grade. Students that lost shoes and uniforms in the hurricane no longer can attend school. With our help, these students will receive school photos for the first time in their lives! In addition, the monies raised will be used to provide school supplies, shoes and uniforms for the children. The 5th Annual Ski Trip to Jiminy Peak is scheduled for Saturday, March 4th. All middle school students and their families are invited to come. An email was sent home to parents, so if they haven’t mentioned it, make sure to ask them about it or speak to Ms. Adler for more details and how to register. Registration ends tomorrow! The MS School Store will be open tomorrow. We will be selling Middle School SPIRIT WEAR! This includes T-shirts, blankets, hats, assorted cups; swell bottles, lunch bags and jewelry! We can’t wait! Congratulations Archana Verma, Nathaniel Lee, and their advisor, Serena McCalla on being named finalists in the Regeneron Competition. Congratulations to our Nassau County Chess Champions, Andrew Chen, William Hu, Wesley Wang, Evelynn Zhu, Brian Fong, Oliver Liu, Ernest Wang, Warren Wang, Johnny Wu, and their advisors Paul Bode and Matthew DeMarinis. Congratulations Mutahara Bhuiyan, Caroline Chen, Molly Schwartz, Amanda Luong, and their advisor Dr. Michael Hartnett for being selected as Top 10 Literary Magazine Pegasus winners.
Last month, PTA Council sponsored a district-wide event with John Hildebrand, senior Education Reporter for Newsday. Parents and staff enjoyed learning about the publishing process. We also discussed current issues in education policy in New York State and nationally.
Earlier this week Council leaders were part of a discussion with Dr. Eric Sundberg. He shared with us information on the new social studies standards as well as exciting new programs like Jericho History Day. It was a great opportunity for us to learn what and how students are learning about history in our schools. Thank you Dr. Sundberg for your presentation.
Next month, on March 27, Open Council will feature a program with the Jericho Wellness Coalition. This meeting will not be at Jackson as noted on the calendar. It will take place at the Middle School Library. All parents and staff are welcome. We hope you will join us.

Good evening everyone, I would like to begin by thanking everybody here tonight, especially
our respected Board members and our superintendent, for allowing me to present my thoughts and reasoning behind making Eid an official school holiday.
My name is Hamza Malik and I am in io" Grade; I grew up on Long Island and have been in the Jericho School District since elementary school. I have had a great time growing up in Jericho, and I have made good friends and have been mentored by extraordinary teachers and coaches who have all made my time here at Jericho a most enriching experience. However, I believe, along with many other Muslims in the community, that our experience at Jericho would be even greater if the school were to observe Eid-ul Fitr and Eid-ul-Adha as official school holidays. Throughout the years, many of us have had to miss school for religious reasons on those days, which not only puts stress on the students to make up the work they have missed, but also on the teachers to gather the assignments and re-teach the students any material they missed. As my grade president, I have been in touch with other students who share my sentiments and fully support this initiative. We are hopeful that Jericho will resolve to join the other Long Island districts that have already affirmed their commitment to diversity.
I believe that recognizing the two Eids as official school holidays will not only help the many Muslim students and families keep up with the work, but will also give other students an understanding of our culture and religion, as I have about theirs. I have been asked countless times by my peers why I miss school on those days and they always seem interested to learn more about my culture and my religion. Moreover, such a move will send a clear message about our core values here at Jericho, which have always been about embracing diversity and standing up for each other. The Muslim community believes that the community ofJericho as a whole would be more understanding of each other, creating a more tolerant and inclusive community for everyone. Thank you.
Eid Holiday Initiative Speech Shewar Khan
Good evening everyone. My name is Shewar Khan and I'm a Cantiague parent and also co-VP of the PTA Executive Board. I have a 5th grader, Rohail, who you heard last month as part of the student leader presentation and a 3rd grader, Zoya, both of whose presence here makes this presentation all the more special for me.
I'd like to start by thanking you for giving us the opportunity today, to present the request to add the Eid holidays to the district calendar. We are privileged to be part ofthis diverse, inclusive district, one in which my children not only feel integrated but are truly happy and inspired every single day.
We have come to you as a community today, to talk a little bit about the significance of the Eid holidays and what they mean to the billion Musl ims around the world and especially about what they mean to our kids. Truth be told however, while we may observe different traditions during these holidays, at the core, we are really just here as parents. Parents, like all of you, who want the best for their children. Parents who want their kids in school as many days as is humanly possible (!l but parents who also want their children to be able to celebrate these special occasions with their families without the fear of missing a test or having to make up school work. Perhaps, most of all, we are here as parents who want their children to feel included when they are wished "Happy Holidays" by their friends.
The importance of inclusion is something we can all attest to. We feel the need for it when we interact with our colleagues at work, see the need for it with friends and even strangers on social media and above all recognize the need for it in our children's interactions with their friends and teachers at school. It is in this very spirit of inclusion that I chose to volunteer for the PTA Executive Board. Well, aside from the fact that my kids practically begged me to! f felt that it set a good example for them, teaching them to value their community, to give back whenever possible and to make decisions that represent everyone, that give a voice to everyone. We are merely requesting the same from you today - to make a decision that will create awareness and inclusion, benefitting all our children, not just the
Muslim ones, to set the tone for the rest of the Island, as you do in so many ways already, by showing that Jericho stands for diversity, that its core value is one of inclusion.
I would like to end with the fact that my husband and I came to Jericho in 2011 based on rankings but stayed because it 's so, so much more than that. It 's where we first learnt to be bucket fillers, where Rohail was encouraged to pursue his passion and start a Rubik's Cube recess club, where Zoya developed passionsfor singing and soccer, where my 2 year old recognizes a picture of Dr. Sinanis even though he no longer works here, where we've made some lifelong friends that I will treasure forever and where I have a voice and this platform to be able to stand here before you to support an initiative that is very dear to my heart.
Good evening! My name is Tala Abukoush and I am a student at JMS. It is
an honor to be here today and I want to thank you for giving me the chance
to speak about the Muslim holiday and how important it is to me.
Please allow me to walk you through that day and what exactly we perform
on this special day. After 30 days of fasting, we have a holiday called the
Eid al-Fitr . Very early in the morning around 6:00 AM, our father gathers us
all up and we go to pray at the mosque. After that, we go visit all of our
relatives to wish them a happy Eid.
As children, we are so excited each year waiting for this holiday to come,
the way other children wait for their own holidays that they celebrate. The
best part of the holiday is that each of us get rewarded with many treats for
the hard work of fasting for 30 days, while not skimping on our homework
assignments or sports commitments. I would love to celebrate my holiday
without having to worry about skipping a day of school and having to make
up for the work I missed.
This is why I am here today, to join my voice in asking you to officially add
my holiday to the Jericho school calendar to stand as a day off from school.
Thank you very much for your time and I hope you take into consideration
my humble request.

Teachers, Parents and Students of the Jericho Community,
We want to thank you for allowing us the opportunity to stand before you
to respectfully request the addition of the two major Muslim Eid holidays, Eid Al
Fitr and Eid Al-Adha, and the Hindu and Sikh holiday ofDiwali to our official
school calendar. Tonight, we come together as educators, parents and students, to
discuss the importance of recognizing the diverse groups that make up Jericho's
distinct community.
My name is Zeina Sayegh Safa; four years ago, my husband and I
moved to Jericho. Like everyone else, we came to Jericho schools already aware of
the superior quality of a Jericho education and the wonderful opportunities that
await our three children. What we did not know at the time was how diverse the
community has grown over the years, a vibrant tapestry of different cultures,
languages and backgrounds, having all gravitated towards this hamlet on Long
Island to call their home, on the one hand, for the obvious reason of seeking the
nationally-ranked Jericho education; on the other hand, because Jericho has done
an exceptional job fostering a tolerant and accepting community.
It is the spirit of this diversity that brings us here today to kindly request
the addition of these three important holy holidays to our official school calendar.
The Muslim community is one of the fastest growing minority groups in the United
States, and it is no coincidence that New York City approved the addition of the
two Muslim holidays, Eid Al-Fitr and Eid Al-Adha, to their official school
calendar last year, as well as Syosset schools earlier this year. Eid Al-Fitr, the
Festival of Breaking Fast, celebrates the end of Ramadan, the Muslim month of
fasting. Physically capable Muslims observe this holy month by fasting from
sunrise to sunset. Eid Al-Adha, or the Festival of Sacrifice, celebrates the end of
the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca, while commemorating Prophet Abraham's
willingness to sacrifice his son Isaac in obedience of God's command, hence the
name of the holiday.
Every Eid, Muslim parents are faced with the tough decision of whether
to keep their children home to celebrate together as a family, or to send them to
school because they do not want them to miss out on important information or
testing. Considering our students' work ethics and high education standards, our
children are reluctant to miss school, even if they have an excused absence due to
religious holidays, because they will have to make up the missed work and risk
falling behind.
We strongly believe that by adding the above holidays, Jericho would
complete the circle of cultural acceptance that it has come to represent. By
favorably considering this proposal, the School District will send an unequivocal
message of appreciation of the rich cultural backgrounds and religious diversity
within its community, and will further deepen its Muslim students' sense of
acceptance and belonging to that community.
By accepting these two holidays, Jericho schools will not only impact the
lives of its community members, but will also set the model for other districts to
emulate. We thank you for your time and consideration of this proposal and we
sincerely hope that you will come to a much-awaited decision that will serve the
needs of all members of our community.
