    American History

    Introduction

    The American History Collection at American Bangkok College is dedicated to

    supplying reliable and resourceful information to all undergraduate students, faculty andstaff. The breadth covered comprises of pre-colonial and pre-Columbian American

    history through contemporary history including the Iraq War. The collection draws from

    various genres including audio, video, books, journals, websites, and blogs. Ourembedded librarians have worked closely with the American History department to

    ensure that our collection supplies information and resources that will meet your research

    needs. The variety of genres and topics provide an exciting, up-to date, and user friendly

    experience.

    I. Print Materials

    Books

    Arnold, James R. and Weiner, Roberta. (2011). American Civil War; the essentialreference guide. Book News Inc., Portland, OR.

    This source is an encyclopedia and reference guide to the causes andconsequences of the American Civil War in one single volume. There are over

    100 entries, including essays from key historical figures, images and maps, and

    various other primary source documents. According toReference and Research

    Book News, it provides concise entries on many important topics and figuresinvolved in the conflict.

    Capozzola, Christopher Joseph Nicodemus. ( 2008). Uncle Sam wants you: World WarI and the making of the modern American citizen. Oxford University Press.

    This book covers how conscription and war changed the face of American society.It covers the relationships between government institutions and American citizens

    in effort to mobilize and fight. According to Mark E. Grotelueschen writing for

    theJournal of World History, Capozzolas true mastery of the relevant secondaryliterature and his ability to carry themes through his various chapters make this

    book a book all historians of modern America should not only be familiar with,

    but be able to enjoy reading as well.

    Daddis, Gregory A. (2011). No Sure Victory: Measuring U.S. Army Effectiveness and

    Progress in the Vietnam War. Oxford Press, USA.

    The author served in the Vietnam War and is a History professor. This book

    covers military and political history before, during, and after the war. According

    to Peter Bushs review, Daddis has written a provocative and well-researchedbook. It contains an extensive bibliography and a whopping 773 footnotes.

    Fischer, David Hackett. (1989). Albions Seed, Four British Folkways in America.

    Oxford University Press, New York.

    Fischer maps out the journey of culture transferred from the British Isles to theearly settlements of America. Great detail and attention is given, in this 946 page

    book, to cultural history covering topics from clothing styles to statistics of landuse and settlement layouts.According to a review by Kenneth Morgan at West

    London Institute of Higher Education, the author undoubtedly develops histheme with vigour and enthusiasm, and historians will find much useful

    material inAlbions Seed.

    Josephy, Alvin M. Jr. (2005). 500 Nations. Hutchinson/Pimlico.

    This book has over 400 pages of graphic detail in the form of drawings, photos,maps, and diagrams of over 15,000 years of Native American culture and history.

    It serves as a great centralized source or as a reference point for further research.

    According to Clara Sue Kidwell ofThe Western Historical Quarterly, historianscan hope that it is a beginning for the general public to become more aware of

    American Indians and more receptive to a deeper analysis of their role in

    American history.

    Keane, John (1995). Tom Paine: A Political Life. Little, Brown, and Company, Boston,MA.

    Keane analyzes why Thomas Paine was inspired to write Common Sense, how his

    background affected his views on society and government, and the protection oflife, liberty, and property. David Wilson writing in the William and Mary

    Quarterly states that Keane has produced a lively, often original, and engagingwork that invites us to develop our own response to Paines highly controversialplace in the Age of Revolution.

    Mann, Charles C. (2005). 1491: New Revelations of the Americas before Columbus.

    Knopf, New York, NY.

    Mann sets out to change modern misconceptions concerning the Americas beforeColumbus arrival in 1492. He creates an image of highly populated and highly

    civilized cites and cultures in pre-Columbian America. He uses an assortment of

    maps, statistics, archeological sketches, and pictures of artifacts. According to

    Michael D. Coe writing for theAmerican Scientist, Mann has written animpressive and highly readable book..he does give both sides of most important

    arguments. 1491 gives fitting tribute to those Indians, present and past, whose

    cause he is championing.

    Meriwether, Lewis. Clark, William. Members of the Corps of Discovery. Edited by

    Moulton, Gary E. (2004). The Lewis and Clark Journals (Abridged Edition): AnAmerican Epic of Discovery.

    This book is a selection of accounts of the discoveries made by the Lewis and

    Clark Expedition of the American West. It is comprised of personal journals and

    serves as a good primary source for the wildlife, geography, and native peoples ofAmericas western front. According to Duncan A. Campbell writing for the

    Journal of American Studies, Moulton has chosen wisely and well; this will be

    the definitive one-volume collection from the Lewis and Clark diaries for manyyears to come.

    Morgan, Robert. (2011). Lions of the West. Algonquin Books of Chapel Hill, NC.

    This book gives an entertaining and factual interpretation of the U.S.s westward

    expansion. Main historical figures covered are Thomas Jefferson, Andrew

    Jackson, James K. Polk, and David Crockett. Main historical events coveredconcerning westward expansion are the War of 1812 and the Louisiana Purchase.

    According toKirkus Reviews, this book is A vivid, well-conceived look at

    western expansion in the old narrative-driven school of Bernard DeVoto and

    Wallace Stegner.

    Purdue, A. W. (1999). The Second World War. Basingstoke and London, MacMillan.

    This book serves as a great tool for research and reference. It covers Americas

    role as well as the global role in the causes and results of the war. According toDonald G. Schilling writing for theJournal of Contemporary History, this book

    grows out of the authors 20 years of teaching courses on the war at the Open

    University and archives his goal of providing a succinct account of the war and an

    introduction to some of the major debates about the war for historians.

    Wood, Gordon S. (1991). The Radicalism of the American Revolution. Vintage Books,A division of Random House, Inc. New York.

    This book gives historical detail to the making of America Democracy and

    Society. Wood emphasizes the political and social ideologies that were thefoundation of early America and how these views affected the new political

    system and way of life. This book also emphasizes the struggle that early

    Americans had while trying to break their socio-political traditions from the OldWorld and create a new country based on opportunity and individual merit.

    According to Robert M. Weir writing for theJournal of Southern History, this

    book is enormously stimulating, and belongs on every educated persons

    bookshelf.

    Woodward, C. Vann. (1974). The Strange Career of Jim Crowe. Oxford University

    Press, New York.

    Woodward covers the history of racial segregation in the American South.

    Subjects range from the post-Civil War Era to the Brown v. School Board in

    Topeka, Kansas. According to theJournal of American History, this book

    remains a path breaking, perceptive, highly readable, judicious, and surprisingly

    fact-filled effort far more than the roots of segregation.

    The American Historical Review, Vol.1, No.1 (1895-Current)

    This journal is published by The University of Chicago Press on behalf of the

    American Historical Association. Articles cover all themes of American history

    from various scholars and research. Articles are refreshed monthly, there are over116 volumes, and there are approximately one thousand book reviews per year.

    The most times cited were 30, and the most times accessed were 14,838.

    The Journal of American History, Vol.1, No.1 (1964-2005)

    This journal was published by the Organization of American Historians. Articles

    cover all themes of American history from various scholars and research in over

    93 volumes. The most times cited were 41, and the most times accessed were

    8,445.

    Scholarly Journal Article:

    Spaeth, Catherine T.C. America in the French Imagination: The French Settlers

    of Assylum, Pennsylvania, and Their Perceptions of 1790s America. Canadian

    Review of American Studies, 2008, Vol. 33 Issue 2, p 247-274, 28p, 1 Map.

    This article is an analysis of French Aristocrats who were exiled to Pennsylvaniaafter the French Revolution. It emphasizes their preconceived notions of what

    America had to offer versus the reality of creating a Utopia of the Old French

    World with the new freedoms, opportunities, and idealisms. The Canadian

    Review of American Studies has been published 3 times annually since 1992, and

    it includes essays, essay reviews, and multi-disciplinary analysis in culture and

    history. The journal is abstracted and indexed in over 20 publications.

    This blog is a compilation of contemporary literature on the Iraq War and

    Americas involvement in it. It serves as a good primary source for contemporaryAmerican history and is updated almost daily. It also has an archives section,

    This site is an excellent source for undergraduate students, graduate students,

    professionals, and anyone interested in American history. It has a directory ofHistorical Journals in over 100 different topics. The site also offers information

    on memberships, meetings, prizes and fellowships, jobs and careers, publications,

    and additional resources. The American Historical Association was founded byCongress in 1889; it is non-profit and is the largest historical society in the U.S.

    This site is an excellent source for anyone needing information concerning

    African-American history. The main page is user friendly with search topicsincluding: the beginning of slave trade in Africa, segregation in America, and

    This podcast is on theLearn Out Loudwebsite. It has various historical podcastsand is very user friendly and easy to access. U.S. Presidents covers biographies

    of American presidents and gives brief historical information pertaining to each

    one. This source is ideal for reference or a starting point when doing furtherresearch for students of American history.

    Video

    Burns, Kenneth. (1990). The Civil War. Written, directed, and produced by

    KennethBurns, Ric Burns, and Geoffrey C. Ward.

    This nine episode documentary series covers basically every aspect of

    the American Civil War. It starts with the cause of the war through the final

    battle. Burns included photographs and audio of memoirs and letters. He usedprofessional historical consultants, and visited historical sites and museums to

    gather factual information.
