Creating has always been a part of my life, from lines on a paper to paints on
a furniture piece to the joining of thread and fabric. I cannot remember a time
in my life when I was not using my hands to create something.
As a young child I can remember using cardboard boxes to create a tiny doll
size house filled with furniture made from items found around the house. A
bed from a tissue box, a table from a plastic cup and butter container lid. A
scrap piece of fabric made a perfect table topper and backdrop for the china
and cutlery I made out of clay. I fashioned chairs from toilet paper rolls and
wallpapered the walls with shelf liner paper.
As I grew, so did the scale of my desire and spaces in which to create. My
inspiration for creation moved me toward a career in visual merchandising
and display. Space planning and visual aesthetics were just a few of the
aspects that made this job so rewarding. Later while working in furniture
sales, interaction with buyers led me to discover how I could help other
people bring their visions to life with my knowledge of design.
My passion for design and devotion to the interests of my future clients led
me to seek further knowledge of new practical design tools and trends so that
I might better serve their ever-changing needs.

“My husband and I were having some difficulty just
getting started in furnishing our new home. We both
agreed that the quality, selection and price of Ethan
Allen furnishings would be great “bang for the buck”
and the options available would finish the design we
sought. We gave Jen our magazine tear outs and
other inspiration and spoke with her about our vision.
She evaluated our existing furnishings and décor
items and were able to suggest the items available
from Ethan Allen that would complete our design. Her
ability to listen carefully and provide options and visual
materials enabled us to visualize the specific and
overall vision, this kept the decision making move
along quickly and stress free.

Without Jen’s help with everything, the entire process
would have taken far longer and we would have been
more stressed in making decisions that we would be
living with for many years to come. Friends and family
rave about the overall look of our décor and we enjoy
our new furnishings everyday, and have not found
one item that we regret purchasing in any way. We
are very thankful to Jen for all her efforts they are
greatly appreciated.”

“...inviting feeling that gives me lots of comfort and pleasure.
Visually my new family room is exciting and yet relaxing. Jen didn’t
try to do HER room but rather she translated my tastes to capture
what felt right to me. She succeeded beautifully and was so easy to
work with. Her final touches delighted and surprised me and brought
the room to life.”

“When we purchased our home, it was a blank slate and a bit
overwhelming. Jen helped us blend seamlessly our older pieces with
wonderful new Ethan Allen pieces. She helped us choose the right
drapes and the perfect lamps. Every day we enjoy the results of her
talents. She played a major part in making the house the home we
wanted.”

Design School Project: REI Break Room
I was asked to redesign the existing break room of REI’s Seattle break room. This room is
used daily by up to 500 employees. The requirements of the space include: dining;
preparation of meals; relaxation; reading; storage of personal belongings; computer
stations; a separate phone area; and distribution of printed materials to employees.
I was able to meet the functional requirements of the space while giving purpose to areas
needed. By creating different areas it gives each space a purpose and eliminates the
unsightly distractions to those who will be using it.

Design School Project: Commercial Office Space
My design ensures that the flow of space helps to cultivate the growth and power of the
company culture. I created an open office concept with separation for selected meeting and
working spaces. This open concept and neutral design creates an environment that helps to
encourage creativity through open interaction between all employees.

Design School Project: Residential Kitchen Design
This Portland, Oregon 1910 Arts and Crafts home was in need of a kitchen remodel. The family
asked for the kitchen to allow for family interaction during meal preparation and wanted it to include
all the modern conveniences of today while staying true to the classic Arts and Crafts feel.
I was able to create the look and feel of 1910 with the use of color, texture and lines depicted from
that era. Using a blue-gray with its complimentary copper hue gives the art glass life and brings
light to the subtle colors of that time period. The warm woods used to show contrast to the cool
stone surfaces, create a surface to showcase the patterns and motifs of that era.
The thoughtful space plan makes the most out of functional storage and working surfaces while
encouraging family gathering during meal time.
