We are NOT in favor of flexible work schedules

What to expect:

Different types of flex schedules

Disadvantages of each type

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/art-markman-phd/flexibility-research_b_3943836.html

Completely Flexible Schedule

● What is it?○ Employee is able to arrange their work schedule completely by

adjusting start times and end times. Hours are also able to be moved around to meet the demands of life.

■ Flexibility in the scheduling of hours worked■ Flexibility in amount of hours worked■ Flexibility in the place of work

● Example of Flexible Work Schedule○ Employee has the ability to move around schedule to accommodate

their life demands, this means working non-traditional hours, in a different location or even shortened shifts.

Disadvantages of Completely Flexible Schedule

● Risk of burnout

● Limited Child Care

● Internal & External Perceptions

● Virtual Communication

● Availability Concerns http://www.popsugar.com/smart-living/Secrets-Avoiding-Burnouts-Permanently-35472349

Results-Only Work Environment (ROWE)● Focused on results and productivity instead of the actual time worked

○ No Work Schedule○ No face to face meetings○ Come and go as you please○ Work whenever or wherever you want

● Example of ROWE Policy:○ “Imagine rolling in to work at 2 p.m. on a Monday, after spending the morning with your family.

Only a few of your team members are at their desks, and no one asks where you were or why

you're late. You get right to work, focusing intensely until 8 p.m., and then you leave the

office. Tomorrow, you plan to join a colleague at a local library to finish the project you started today. Once you've met your deadline, you'll be off for the rest of the week.”

Disadvantages of ROWE

● Loss of Synergy● Perception● Service● Delays● Employees love it for the wrong reasons

Best Buy recently eliminated its ROWE program, their CEO Stated "In the context of a business transformation, it makes sense to consider not just what the results are but how the work gets done...It's 'all hands on deck' at Best Buy, and that means having employees in the office as much as possible to collaborate and connect on ways to improve our business."

Alternative Schedule

● A work schedule outside of the traditional working hours of 9 to 5● There are several types of alternative work schedules

○ Second shift○ Third shift○ Working only during the weekends

● More employees to handle

● Costly

● Disrupts life outside of work

● Staff issues http://beyondplm.com/2013/06/14/cloud-plm-and-disruptive-technology-economic-impact/

Compressed Workweek● Used to reduce the standard five

day workweek ● Compresses working hours into

fewer working days○ Most common types of compressed

workweeks are three 12 hour days or four 10 hour days. http://money.cnn.com/2015/04/27/pf/4-day-work-week/

Disadvantages of Compressed Workweeks

● Traditional work schedule is 8am-5pm, five-days-a-week

● Workers choose their start and end time● Example of Flextime Policy

○ Allowed to work the other 24 hours:

■ between 6:00am -12:00pm and 4:00pm - 8:00pm Monday - Thursday, or

■ Anytime between 6:00am - 8:00pm on Friday
