    Katrin Fridriks

    Born in 1974, Reykjavik, Iceland

Katrin Fridriks is an abstract expressionist painter who examines questions about new technologies and polemical scientific research of the contemporary age. Her Icelandic roots have aroused a curiosity primarily in the four elements – air, fire, earth and water. These elements are powerfully displayed in her native country by volcanoes, geysers and glaciers, and have shaped her way to comprehend nature and life.

Fridriks' pictorial artworks explore space, shape and time, bringing an innovative dimension to abstraction. The artist’s technique behind these works does not conform to the conventional method of painting with brushes, instead Fridriks pours acrylic paint onto the canvas after manipulating colour and texture in large containers.

Recently Fridriks discovered a new pathway which explore an unknown frequency between the colours black and white, uncovering an expanse the artist describes as the ‘grey area’. This new passage unearths the endless possibilities of a monochromatic tonal scale has fuelled the artist to delve deeper.

    Conrad Jon Godly

Born in 1962, in Davos, Switzerland

After graduating from Basel’s School of Art in 1986, Godly moved away from his nexus of inspiration in Switzerland, changing both his surroundings and medium. From 1988-2004, Godly’s photographic work found international success both in magazines and advertising. The artist currently lives and works between Switzerland and Japan, which heavily influence his works in oils.

Godly’s heavily impastoed canvases are not only a recurring motif, but work as a demonstration of the semiotic richness of one’s surrounding environment. The silence and dramatic tension of the mountains traverses its viewer to the summit of vertiginous proportions, giving over his canvases to the all-consuming elements of nature.

Using sweeping brushstrokes and earthy palettes, Godly’s paintings address the symbiotic relationship between human nature and the sublime; finding a beauty in the awe and terror of nature. Godly exposes us to a more contemporary, almost abstract, view of what is often considered a more traditional subject.

    Hans Kotter

    Born in 1966, Mühldorf, Germany

Hans Kotter studied at the Art Students League in New York City alongside contemporary artists, Bruce Dorfman and William Scharf. Now living and working in Berlin, Germany, his light-based work focuses on the pluriverse of optical possibilities that break through the boundaries of space and vision. His installations control the perception of its audience in technically refined combinations, creating a sense of illusion both physically and mentally.

LED lights, fluorescent light tubes, glass, plexi, mirrors, metal and other materials serve as a basis for the creation of these light-art works, which continuously take on different shapes, and in their reference, test any conceivable form of dealing with light. It is difficult to categorise Kotter’s artwork since their appearance and technical finish open up new ideas of image and thought. Whether in an interaction of colour or black-and-white aesthetics focusing on a shadow effect, the result artistically and technically amazes its viewers.

    Andy Moses

Born in 1962, Los Angeles, USA

Andy Moses was raised exposed to the abstract paintings of his late father, Ed Moses. He attended the California Institute of Arts, 1979-1981, where he experimented with performance, film and painting. He then moved to New York where he worked under the artist Pat Steir, and developed his abstract and representational approach to painting.

Moses’ distinctive style is simultaneously abstract and representational; the technical fluidity of his work with acrylics reflect his experiences of growing up surrounded by incredible landscapes. His palette of colours references the unique southern California scenery and serve to mimic nature and its forces.

Forming the basis of Moses' work is the relation between image-idea-process and detailed research about praxis through the physical and chemical reactions of the materials and its fluidity. He uses a unique process of preparing layers of floating paint before allowing them to flow across the surface.

    Masayoshi Nojo

    Born in 1989, Kanagawa, Japan

Masayoshi Nojo completed his MA in Japanese Paintings in 2015 from the Kyoto University of Art and Design. With his unique and complex techniques, he combines contemporary visual languages with Japanese aesthetics, exploring the themes of memory and the passage of time.

Rooted in Japanese art history, Nojo’s use of silver - ethereal and shimmering - is particularly reminiscent of Ogata Kōrin’s celebrated work during the Edo Period in seventeenth-century Japan.

This exploration of time and memory is achieved using an innovative variety of mixed media and techniques, with each stage meticulously executed. Firstly, Nojo prepares the foundation of his canvas with a marbled layer of acrylic paint. He then photographs, selects, and carefully adjusts each image before transferring the image to the canvas via silk screening - allowing the marbled layer beneath to shine through. Finally, layers of aluminium and silver foil are applied to the canvas, recreating a sense of intangible distant memories.

    Santiago Parra

    Born in 1986, Bogotá, Colombia

Santiago Parra studied Literature at Universidad Nacional de Colombia, followed by an art education at Universidad de los Andes, Bogotá and later at the Academy of Art University to study Fine Arts in San Francisco where he also learnt about Motion Pictures and Television.

Parra is known for his large, abstract and highly expressive black and white paintings. His canvases capture the suspended flatness of the calligraphy-like imagery, harmonizing two seemingly incompatible aesthetic moments, spontaneity and pondering, which are all shaped by movement, strength, gravity and skill of the Columbian artist’s creative process. He explores the expressive possibilities of the quintessential abstract form. With an audacious manner he redefines abstract structures with bold sculptural brushstrokes. His work is both an aesthetic exploration and a questioning of the essence of abstract image making.

    Hande Sekerciler

    Born in 1982, Bursa, Turkey

Hande Sekerciler is a sculptor renowned for her figurative forms. She attended Marmara University, studying in the Department of Arts and Crafts Education from 1998 to 2002.

Sekerciler credits the Hellenistic and Renaissance periods for influencing her artworks. Artworks from these periods act as a stimulus from which she experiments ideas of form and social issues through her sculpture.

Her nude sculpted figures reject clothing, accessories and even hair to remove them from gendered and societal labels. This so-called “purification” is an attempt to create characters at “peace with their sexuality and orientation, who embrace their existence”. Her interest in technology and new production techniques help her to combine classical forms with contemporary production methods. She uses state-of-the-art software and hardware during her productions. The artist’s elegant sculptures allow the viewer to build a narrative for themselves as they explore every angle of her works.

    Henrik Uldalen

Born 1986, in South Korea and raised in Norway

Henrik Uldalen is a self-taught, expressionist artist, whose creative production revolves around classic figurative painting. Developed for over 12 years, his technique is placed together with abstract impasto, presented in a contemporary manner. Henrik examines the dark side of life, nihilism, existentialism, longing and loneliness, juxtaposed with fragile beauty. The artist’s practice helps him grasp his entity, expressing “I paint because I need to paint. I have always had things in my life that I need to work out, and I’ve found that the best way is to take it out in the studio.”

Though a figurative painter, his focus has always been the emotional and metaphysical content rather than narratives, his works being self-portraits projected onto models. This visual stimulus is deeply ingrained in his production. The artist explains that he creates his work with ‘no limitations, pure expression’, a rare approach combining both gesture and intellect, two actions never before synchronised.

    Zümrütoğlu

    Born in 1970, Konya, Turkey

Zümrütoğlu graduated from the Faculty of Fine Arts at Dokuz Eylul University in Izmir in 1996. Following his graduation from university, he continued his studies in Belgium and Holland where he had the opportunity to further his study of European paintings. His paintings evoke characteristics of German Expressionism and share their formal approach to subject matter.

The artist is recognised for his direct and honest views on current affairs, visually voicing the unjust he has witnessed through his expressive brush strokes. Zümrütoğlu’s practice is strongly influenced by his synaesthesia – the ability to see sound and hear colour. He uses this to bring to light his anxieties of modern life, encompassing viewers with chaotic tension and a need to understand the contextual significance of his artworks.

Zümrütoğlu’s signature style of heavily impastoed canvas’, portray his unhinged and brutally honest form of expression in an authentic and unedited light.
