Everyone’s SonIn opposing the mass release of terrorists in exchange for Gilad Shalit’s freedom,

I felt as if I was betraying my own sonBy Yossi Klein HaLevi

For the last five years I have tried not to think of Gilad Shalit. I avoided the newspaper photographs of his first months as an Israel Defense Forces draftee, a boy playing soldier in an ill-fitting uniform. Sometimes, despite myself, I’d imagine him in a Gaza cellar, bound, perhaps wired with explosives to thwart a rescue attempt. And then I would force myself to turn away.

I tried not to think of Gilad because I felt guilty. Not only was I doing nothing to help the campaign to free him, I opposed its implicit demand that the Israeli government release as many terrorists as it takes to bring him home. Israel has no death penalty, and now we would lose the deterrence of prison: If the deal went through, any potential terrorist would know it was just a matter of time before he’d be freed in the next deal for the next kidnapped Israeli.

But the argument could never be so neatly resolved. Each side was affirming a profound Jewish value: ransom the kidnapped, resist blackmail. And so any position one took was undermined by angst. What would you do, campaign activists challenged opponents, if he were your son? “He’s everyone’s son,” sang rocker Aviv Gefen.

One day I passed a rally for Gilad in a park in downtown Jerusalem. Several counter-demonstrators were holding signs opposing surrender to terrorism. “I happen to agree with you,” I said to one of them. “But don’t you feel uneasy protesting against the Shalit family?”

“We’re not protesting against the Shalit family,” he replied. “We’re protesting to save future victims of freed terrorists. Those victims don’t have names yet. But they could be my son or your son.”

Every debate over Gilad ended at the same point: your son.We never referred to him as “Shalit,” always “Gilad.” The

Gilad dilemma set our parental responsibilities against our responsibilities as Israelis—one protective instinct against another. The prime minister’s job is to resist emotional pressure and ensure the nation’s security; a father’s job is to try to save his son, regardless of the consequences.

And so I tried, too, not to think of Gilad’s extraordinary parents, Noam and Aviva. Even when denouncing the government they spoke quietly, incapable of indignity. The best of Israel, as we say here, reminding ourselves that the best of Israel is the best of anywhere.

For more than a year the Shalits have lived in a tent near the prime minister’s office. When I walked nearby I would avoid the protest encampment, ashamed to be opposing the campaign. This past Israeli Independence Day, though, I saw a crowd gathered around the tent, and wandered over. “GILAD IS STILL ALIVE,” banners reminded: It’s not too late to save him. Inside the tent, Noam and Aviva were sitting with family and friends, singing the old Zionist songs. I wanted to shake Noam’s hand, tell him to

be strong, but I resisted the urge. I didn’t deserve the privilege of comforting him.

I wanted to tell Noam what we shared. As it happens, my son served in the same tank unit as Gilad, two years after he was kidnapped. I wanted to tell Noam that that was the real reason I couldn’t bear thinking about his family. That in opposing the mass release of terrorists for Gilad, it was my son I was betraying.

Now, inevitably, the government has given in to the emotional pressure. Inevitably, because we all knew it would—must—end this way. A few months ago, as part of its psychological war against the Israeli public, Hamas released an animated film depicting Gilad as an elderly gray-haired man, still a prisoner in Gaza. No image tormented us more.

Still, there are few celebrations here today. Even those who supported the campaign to free Gilad must be sobered by the erosion of Israeli deterrence. And those who opposed the campaign are grieving for Gilad’s lost years. All of us share the same unspoken fear: In what condition will he be returned to us? What have these years done to him?

Hamas leaders are boasting of victory. If so, it is a victory of shame. Hamas is celebrating the release of symbols of “resistance,” not of human beings. Hamas’ victory is an expression of the Arab crisis. The Arab world’s challenge is to shift from a culture that sanctifies honor to a culture that sanctifies dignity. Honor is about pride; dignity is about human value. Hamas may have upheld its honor; but Israel affirmed the dignity of a solitary human life.

In recent months the campaign to free Gilad demanded that the government worsen conditions for convicted terrorists in Israeli jails, to psychologically pressure the Palestinian public. So long as Gilad was being held incommunicado, activists argued, Palestinian families should be barred from visiting their imprisoned sons. While Gilad’s youth was wasting away, terrorists shouldn’t be allowed to

study for college degrees. The government promised to

oblige. But as it turned out, there were legal complications. A newspaper article the other day noted the results of the government’s get-tough policy: Imprisoned terrorists would no longer be provided with the Middle Eastern delicacy of stuffed vegetables.

How is it possible, Israelis ask themselves, that so-called progressives around the world champion Hamas and Hezbollah against the Jewish state? Perhaps it’s because we’re too complicated, too messy: a democracy that is also an occupier, a consumerist society living under a permanent death sentence. Perhaps those pure progressives fear a contagion of Israeli ambivalence.

For all my anxieties about the deal, I feel no ambivalence at this moment, only gratitude and relief. Gratitude that I live in a country whose hard leaders cannot resist the emotional pressure of a soldier’s parents. And relief that I no longer have to choose between the well-being of my country and the well-being of my son.

“I opposed the demand

that the Israeli government

release terrorists”

“Honor is about pride;

dignity is about human

value.”

WE’RE BRINGING THEM HOMEBy Rabbi Harold Robinson, director, JWB Jewish Chaplains Council

After three years of planning, fundraising, and advocating, we were finally sitting in the gallery above the chamber of the U.S. House of Representatives, waiting for a vote on a resolution to place a memorial to fallen Jewish chaplains in Arlington National Cemetery. Although we had run into major obstacles along the way, we were finally to achieve our goal. The House of Representatives was about to pass the resolution, and then it would go to the Senate. Those 14 chaplains were almost home with their comrades in arms.

This project, which has consumed so much time and energy, began when Ken Kraetzer, a member of the Sons of the American Legion, called to ask why there was no memorial to Jewish chaplains on Chaplains Hill. Ken knew the story of the four chaplains who gave up their life vests on the USS Dorchester during World War II, and he knew that both Catholic and Protestant chaplains who had died while on active duty had memorials at Arlington.

I was as excited as my fellow attendees—Ken Kraetzer, Sol Moglen, David Engle and his family, and Shelly Rood from JFNA. I recognized the need for another memorial right away, and we began our efforts to make it happen. Sol Moglen of Caldwell, New Jersey, helped us raise the funds we needed, and Shelly Rood worked tirelessly in the las t few months as a liaison with Congress. The son of one of the chaplains who died during the Vietnam conf l ic t , David Engle brought his wife and sons to see the culmination of our work.

We had arrived prior to the debate t o m e e t w i t h Representative Jeff Mil ler, (R-FL). To our surprise, R e p r e s e n t a t i v e Miller and his staff thanked us fo r having given them an opportunity to do something like this before Memorial Day, and of course we thanked them for their support.

The thanks continued during the debate. Republicans thanked Democrats, and Democratic representatives read our names and

pointed out that we were in the gallery. Although that broke a House rule, it was a high honor to be referenced on the floor, an honor earned by the sacrifice of 14 colleagues. The bill passed on a voice vote, but then we were treated to an instance of the wonderful complexity of our system of government. The voice vote was retracted so the bill could pass later on a recorded vote. That allowed the representatives to come into the chamber and vote in person.

When the resolution went to the Senate, we ran into another of those glitches so common to bureaucracy. Another item had been added to the resolution which would establish a presidential commission concerning all future memorials at Arlington. An anonymous senator’s hold put on this particular item brought everything to a screeching halt. Luckily, I was able to call a rabbi and a minister who called the right people on the committee to work out a satisfactory arrangement. From 11:30 that morning until 4:30 in the afternoon, when

unanimous consent was finally given and the resolution passed, were among the most anxious moments of my life. Everyone was so eager to get it done before Memorial Day.

Our next step was to take the design to the U.S. Fine Arts Commission, a group of seven highly qualified p r e s i d e n t i a l appointees who approve everything r e l a t i n g t o a r t i n t h e F e d e r a l Government and the D.C. district, i n c l u d i n g a l l coinage minted by the U.S. When our turn came, we were asked about all aspects of the design, and we told the story of the four chaplains to explain why we were seeking to erect the memorial. We asked them to approve the design

as well as the concept, and in unprecedented fashion, they did so in record time.

The “Jewish Chaplains Memorial Dedication Ceremony” was held on October 24, 2011 in Arlington National Cemetary.

In May 2011, the U.S. Congress approved a resolution to place a memorial to Jewish military chaplains who had died while on active duty in Arlington National Cemetery.

MJCC ATHLETIC CODE OF CONDUCT

Preamble The essential elements of character building and ethics in sports are embodied in the concept of sportsmanship. The highest potential of sports is achieved when competition reflects character and ethics.

I therefore agree:

1. I will remember that children participate to have fun and that the sport is for youth, not adults. 2. I will inform the coach of any physical disability or ailment that may affect the safety of my child

or the safety of others. 3. I will learn the rules of and policies of the MJCC, the MJCC Athletic Department, and the sport(s)

I am currently involved in. 4. I will be a positive role model for my child and encourage sportsmanship by showing respect

and courtesy, and by demonstrating positive support for all athletes, coaches, officials and spectators at every practice, tournament, or other event.

5. I will not engage in any kind of unsportsmanlike conduct with any official, coach, athlete, or parent such as booing and taunting, refusing to shake hands, or using profane language or gestures.

6. I will not encourage any behaviors or practices that would endanger the health and well-being of the athletes.

7. I will teach my child to obey the rules and to resolve conflicts without resorting to hostility or violence.

8. I will demand that my child treat other athletes, coaches, officials, and spectators with respect regardless of race, creed, color, gender or ability, or situation.

9. I will teach my child that doing one's best is more important than winning, so that my child will never feel defeated by the outcome of a match or his/her performance.

10. I will praise my child for competing fairly and trying hard. 11. I will never ridicule or yell at my child or other participants for making a mistake or losing a

competition. 12. I will emphasize skill development and practices and how they benefit my child over winning. I

will also de-emphasize competition in the lower age groups. 13. I will promote the emotional and physical well-being of the athletes ahead of any personal

desire I may have for my child to win. 14. I will respect the officials and their authority during competition and will not confront coaches

during a match. 15. I will demand a sports environment for my child that is free from drugs and alcohol, and

weapons, and I will refrain from their use at events. 16. I will be responsible for knowing and understanding the full extent of this

code of conduct. Not knowing will not be a tolerable reason for failing to abide by this code of conduct.

17. I will be responsible for my actions and fully understand that the MJCC is a “Zero Tolerance” facility.

By participating in an MJCC sanctioned athletic event as a parent, athlete, volunteer, referee or coach, I agree to follow these guidelines in order to insure a positive, safe and enjoyable environment for all.

Opening Reception Sunday January 8, 2012 at 2:00-4:00 PM

About Bryan Blakenship, Bill Rowe and Robert McCarrollTheir sculptures and painting deal specifically with personal issues of cultural identity and subjective interpretations of beauty. Their collective work looks beyond a specific narrative to find simple beauty in the timeworn appearance of everyday objects and surfaces created by processes of layering paint, sanding, patching etc. In referencing these objects and processes, whether natural or manmade, they combine them to create layers of visibility that work to reveal and cloak at the same time. The pottery that they make consists primarily of functional high-fire stoneware and porcelain vessels. Their pottery combines beauty, function and some whimsy.

Bryan Blakenship has a Master of Fine Arts from University of Memphis. His art has been exhibited nationally.

Bill Rowe is a professor of Art at Arkansas State University. His art has been exhibited both nationally and internationally.

Robert McCarroll has a Master of Fine Arts from University of Memphis and has been working as a functional potter for 21 years, and has exhibited both locally and nationally.

The Memphis Jewish Community Center is happy to announce their annual HOLIDAY BAzAAR on December 4-11. Art lovers and holiday shoppers are welcome to browse and shop for one-of-a-kind gifts and original works of art. Shop from over 25 artists displaying and selling their creative works. Meet the MJCC Tennis ProsKevin Boldt

Kevin Boldt began his tennis notoriety as a 4 year letter winner at Effingham HS in Illinois. During that time he was talented enough to become the first 3 time Illinois state HS tournament qualifier. From high school Kevin went on to play Played 2 yrs at Lakeland Jr College in Illinois and qualified for NJCAA national tournament as a sophomore. After retiring from college tennis Kevin joined the working world, but never lost contact with his tennis roots. While playing in the local adult tennis leagues Kevin has won 9 Tennessee USTA state league tournaments. Missing the teaching aspect of tennis Kevin received his USTA “pro” certification Kevin and started teaching juniors and adults in Collierville. His success in Collierville includes three ladies teams qualifying for state tournament (one of the first ever to do so in the areas). Kevin is also an assistant coach for Collierville middle school which happens to have one of the top youth tennis teams in the area.

Mark McCluskey

Mark began in organized tennis in high school when he convinced the principal to start a tennis team. He continued playing at UT Martin and Tennessee Tech where he was captain of the Men’s Varsity. He has taught

locally at Ridgeway Country Club, Tunica National, and Memphis Sports Academy. His high school team’s have won a state championship and two runners-up. Winter TaekwondoMillions of people are having fun learning the discipline of Taekwondo. Taekwondo’s emphasis on kicking techniques gives students a great aerobic workout as well as improving their balance and coordination. These skills are great for kids and adults. Participants will also take part in self-evaluation which is an important part of taekwondo, resulting in realization of the student’s physical, and more importantly, their mental strengths and weaknesses. These, along with the increased self-discipline, will help students increase their level of confidence, which will be evident in their life outside of taekwondo.

Private Taekwondo Lessons and Self Defense Classes

Private lessons are available for those of you who are interested in taking your martial arts skill to the next level. Some of the benefits of taking private lessons include: * Individualized attention - 1-on-1 instruction with 3rd degree black belt, Ms. Holly Hardin. For that hour, the instructor is focused on you and no one else!* Accelerated progress - If you’ve been training for a while and want to prepare for a belt test, improve a form or work on certain techniques, taking private lessons may give you the boost you need.* Not a fan of group classes? Students come in a variety of physical abilities. For some, the group class setting may be discouraging because of the pressure to keep up with others. Private lessons are a great way to start your training and gain confidence.

Lessons are only $15 per hour! Contact Austin Carr 761-0810,

[email protected] for an appointment.

Wellness

Staying on TrackThe fall and winter seasons are full of situations that disrupt your everyday routine. Office parties, holiday foods, family dinners, cold weather and family gatherings can often derail your attempts to eat healthy and exercise. Don’t let yourself fall off the health wagon! Take control and make a conscious effort to stay on track this season. Here are some tips from

the CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) on how to stay healthy this fall and winter:1. Wash hands often to keep yourself from spreading germs and getting sick. 2. Bundle up to stay dry and warm. 3. Manage stress. Don’t over-commit yourself and prevent holiday anxiety and pressure. 4. Don’t drink and drive or let others drink and drive. 5. Be smoke-free. Avoid smoking and second-hand smoke. 6. Fasten seat belts while driving or riding in a motor vehicle. Always buckle your child in the car using a child safety

seat, booster seat, or seat belt according to his/her height, weight, and age. 7. Get exams and screenings. Ask what exams you need and when to get them. 8. Get your vaccinations, which help prevent diseases and save lives. 9. Monitor the children. Keep potentially dangerous toys, food, drinks, household items, and other objects out of kids’ reach. Make sure toys are used properly. 10. Practice fire safety. Most residential fires occur during the winter months, so be careful to never leave fireplaces, space heaters, stoves, or candles unattended. Have an emergency plan and practice it regularly. 11. Prepare food safely. Remember these simple steps: wash hands and surfaces often, avoid cross-contamination, cook

foods to proper temperatures, and refrigerate promptly. 12. Eat healthy, and get moving. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Limit your portion sizes and foods high in fat and sugar. Be active for at least 2½ hours a week and help kids and teens be active for at least 1 hour a day.

Exercise of the MonthGlute Kick Backs

Step 1:Stand tall and place your hands on your hips.Step 2:Put all the weight in your right leg, keep both legs straight, and lift your left leg directly behind you. Let your glutes do all the work. Keep your left foot flexed and work on lifting your heel as high as you can without leaning your torso too far forward. Engage your abs to help you stay balanced.Step 3: Lower your left leg so it’s parallel with your right, but don’t let it touch the ground. Then lift it back up behind you. Repeat this move 20 times at a moderate pace, and then lift your leg another 20 times so it’s slightly out to the side to target your outer glutes. Then do the other leg, 20 times behind you, and 20 times diagonally out to the side.

Zero in on the glutes with this targeted toner that lifts your backside. Best part- you don’t need any special equipment, so you can do this exercise at home. Don’t let the holidays and cold weather stop you from exercising!

Recipe of the MonthKosher Roast Stuffed Turkey (Meat)

This Roast Stuffed Turkey is the quintessential Thanksgiving entree, but it is also the perfect dish to serve when entertaining

a large group of people. These carefully written instructions take the novice turkey-roaster from thawing to carving.

Prep Time: 30 minutesCook Time: 3 hours, 30 minutesTotal Time: 3 hours, 60 minutes

Preparation:1. THAW TURKEYThaw frozen turkey in the refrigerator (this minimizes bacteria growth). Keep the turkey in its original wrapper and put it in a shallow pan (to catch drippings). Allow about 48 hours (2 full days) to thaw a 10-12 pound turkey. Once the turkey is defrosted, remove the neck and giblets from its cavities. Rinse and dry turkey. The turkey should be cooked immediately after defrosted 2. PREPARE STUFFINGHeat oil in a skillet, and saute vegetables for about 5 minutes. Dip bread in hot water, squeeze out water and add to sauteed vegetables. Add beaten eggs and spices.3. STUFF AND BIND TURKEYLightly stuff the turkey's neck and body cavities. Tie the legs together. Bind the wings to the body.4. PREPARE TURKEYPreheat oven to 325 degrees Fahrenheit. Place sliced onions and celery on the bottom of a roasting pan. Add water and salt. Place rack over the vegetables. Place the turkey, breast side up, on the rack. Insert a meat thermometer deep into the thickest part of the thigh next to the body, not touching the bone. In a small bowl, mix the oil and spices. Brush the mixture onto the turkey's skin (to keep the turkey moist).5. ROAST TURKEYCover and roast the turkey at 325 degrees Fahrenheit for approximately 2 1/2 to 3 hours. Uncover, baste and roast for approximately another 1/2 to 1 hour. Turkey is fully cooked when (a) the thigh's internal temperature is 180 degrees Fahrenheit, (b) the thickest part of breast is 170 degrees Fahrenheit, (c) the center of the stuffing is 160 degrees Fahrenheit, and (d) the turkey legs pull easily away from the body. Let the turkey stand at least 20 minutes before carving.

Ingredients:TURKEY:• 1 10-12 pound (5 kilogram) whole turkey• 2-3 onions, sliced• 2-3 stalks celery, sliced • 1 cup water• 1/2 tsp. salt

BASTING:• 3/4 cup canola oil• 2-3 Tbsp. paprika• salt and pepper to taste

STUFFING:• 4 cups cubed bread• 1/4 cup oil• 2 stalks celery, finely diced• 1 onion, finely diced• 1 cup canned mushrooms, drained and finely diced• 2 eggs, beaten• 1 tsp. salt, 1/4 tsp. pepper

Anytime One Week TrialWe like to let new swimmers try the swim team anytime for a week to let them know that it will be a good fit before they sign up. If they decide to sign up in the middle of a session we will prorate the registration for what is left of the session. Participating on the Blue Dolphin Swim Team gives the swimmers great physical exercise and produces stronger cardiovascular systems which will carry over in adult life. Don’t stop at “swimmer”.
