Oracle, HP Unveil Computer toCope with Digital Explosion

Longtime business software giant Oracle hasannounced that it is diving headlong into the computerhardware business with a brainier, brawnier machinecrafted to manage the explosion of digital data.

The company’s chief executive Larry Ellison onWednesday unveiled an Exadata Storage Server anda Database Machine built in partnership with computertitan Hewlett Packard. “Oracle is getting into thehardware business but we are not doing it alone,”Ellison said during a speech at an Oracle Open Worldconference in San Francisco. “Conventional storagearrays simply cannot compete with the Oracle-HPDatabase Machine.”

Oracle and HP have worked together for years onsolutions to the rocketing growth in the amount ofdata businesses have crammed into their machines. The amount of digital information is doubling ortripling annually and the number of people companiesneed to have access to that information is multiplyingexponentially as well, according to industry statistics.Businesses grapple with an increasingly difficultchallenge of sifting through growing mountains ofdata for insights regarding customers, inventories, performance and other vital aspects of operations.More than a third of the executives overseeingcomputer networks at major US firms believe that

their data centers will not be able to meet growingdemands by the year 2010, according to HP VicePresident Anne Livermore. “At the heart of this is adata center badly in need of transformation,”Livermore said in a preface to Ellison’s presentation.“They need a next-generation data center.” Ellisonsays Oracle and HP have addressed the problem bybuilding a machine that pairs Intel multi-coreprocessors with blocks of memory, essentially givingeach data storage disk a brain of its own. Instead ofhuge chunks of data being sent over limited bandwidthconnections to business servers for processing, the“brainier” memory disks send just the details beingsought.

Tests of the machines indicate they handleinformation more than 10 times faster than systemscurrently in use, according to Oracle. “I think we arebringing to the market what two great companies dobest and we are doing it as a team,” HP ChiefExecutive Mark Hurd said during a video broadcastappearance with Ellison. “It’s an exciting day for us.I think it’s a great thing for Oracle, HP, the market, and customers.”

The HP Oracle Database Machine combines Exadataservers, beefed-up connections, and high-performance processors in a package. “I hope yourteams are ready to turn these things out like iPods,”Ellison quipped to Hurd, implying the machines wouldbe hot sellers. Exadata servers using the Linux open-source operating system are available immediatelyand models based on other operating systems, suchas Microsoft Windows Vista, “are on the way,”according to Ellison.
