Old School, New School Swing at Festival #38 At the 38th Annual San Diego JazzFest, patrons who attend the Saturday Night Swing Extrava- ganza can listen and dance to the traditional swing sounds of Jonathan Doyle’s Swingtet as well as a contemporary take on the music, played by Josh Colazzo’s Candy Jacket Jazz Band. Doyle, whose resumé includes work with a wide variety of bands from the Jim Cullum Jazz Band to Willie Nelson, is also a gifted composer whose originals make up the bulk of the Swingtet library. His group takes its inspiration from the small band recordings of the ’30s and ’40s. For the San Diego Jazz Fest, the Swingtet (in addition to the leader on reeds) will feature the stellar cast of Marc Caparone, trumpet; April West, trombone; Kris Tokarski, piano; Katie Cavera, guitar; Marty Eggers, bass; and SDJF Artistic Advisor JAZZ RAMBLER Looking Forward To Festival #38 By Jim McNaughton In five short months we will be enjoying SD Jazz Fest #38. Our Festival is one of the most popular in the country. Thanks to all of you who have chosen to be band or musician sponsors in previous years; your support has helped with expenses to bring in the best bands and musicians available. This year will be challenging because the Commission for Arts and Culture, City of San Diego, which has been helping to support the San Diego Jazz Festival for many years has had to make a reduction in the amount of their support. The sponsorship program is vital to allow us to provide you with the best jazz festival possible. We need all of our current sponsor support and if you know of someone who might be interested in being a new sponsor please forward their name and contact information to me: Jim McNaughton, 619-435-0806 or [email protected]. This year a special band made up of Cornell University students who have studied the sounds of early trad jazz bands, such as the Original Dixieland Jass Band, will be featured. This is one of the many bands that will be appearing at the Festival. As usual we will present a line up of trad jazz favorites and bands that will accommodate both dancers and our Swing Dance Extravaganza. The Festival depends on your financial support to help keep the music alive. To sponsor a band or musician send a check to AFCDJS, PO Box 880387, San Diego, CA 92168-0387 or on- line at www.SDjazzfest.org Note: In order to have your sponsorship acknowledged on our website, in the Festival program and on the band signs, we must receive your sponsor- ship donation by October 31, 2017.
