Important Notes

• Only qualified and properly trained Installers should attempt an installation.

• Backstops and height adjusters should never be operated while people are under or near the units.

• Electric height adjusters are equipped with automatic limit switches. Although

these switches are highly reliable, they are mechanical devices and therefore subject to failure. Therefore, when raising or lowering the height adjuster, be prepared to release the key switch at or near the maximum and minimum height settings. Over raising or lowering the height adjuster can result in damage to the unit.

• Care must be taken when handling, lifting or attaching backboards. They are

easily damaged and are also the most visible part of the installation. Take extra care to protect them.

• Backstops should only be raised when height adjusters are at the 10’ setting;

likewise height adjusters should only be operated when masts are in playing position.

General Notes • Jaypro’s exclusive and patented height adjuster is manufactured of interlocking extruded high

grade aluminum alloy. An internal ¾” Acme drive screw is driven either manually from below or electrically from above and as this drive screw turns the backboard and rim are either raised or lowered between a range of 8’ and 10’ from the floor.

• Most drawings and diagrams herein are of the 849 FFFB (Forward Folding Front Braced) 800 series Jaypro mast model. This is done for simplicity’s sake – there should be no difference between the instructions for assembling the height adjuster onto this model versus any other Jaypro model. Additionally, the backboard shown is a 42” glass, but other than subtle differences in the board mounts the installation for other types of backboards is the same. Consult installation drawings supplied with job for specific details on models purchased.

• The following installation steps are intended solely as a guide for a successful installation. There

isn’t necessarily ‘one right way’ – if you have a method that works for you, guarantees the product will be installed correctly and safely, and the end result is the same, feel free to deviate from the prescribed directions in this manual.

Installation Instructions

1. Before the Install a. Check for obvious defects or damage to equipment from shipment. b. Open all boxes, checking for concealed damage. c. Count all hardware. d. Match up all hardware and fittings. e. Report all damages and shortages immediately. f. Meet with General Contractor or Clerk of the Works and make sure your field installation

drawings reflect any and all changes and that the final location of the equipment is correct. g. Be sure to protect the finished floor if applicable.

2. Board Mounts to Back of Backboard a. Assemble channels and fasten direct goal mounts to backboards. Consult installation

drawing and parts list packet for correct hardware to use. b. For wood and fiberglass backboards, the height adjuster will have to be bolted to the top

channel before the channel is bolted to the backboard. c. Leave the hardware just finger tight to begin with and center the top channel carefully and

tighten. d. Each different type of backboard requires different goal mounts, so if there are multiple

types on the job make sure you use the appropriate mount for the goal.

3. Assemble Height Adjuster to Backboarda. Locate the decals on the height adjuster indicating which side bolts to the backboard

(‘BANK’ side). Place this side of height adjuster against board mount channel.b. Center the height adjuster carefully on the channel. This will prevent the unit from binding

when trying to level the board.c. Make sure height adjuster is at the 10’ setting before proceeding.d. Secure height adjuster to board mounts on board with provided hardware. Be sure to use

correct mounting holes – note that board mount has extra holes to allow for mounting bothto front and rear of height adjuster.

Figure 3: Electric Height Adjuster to Backboard/Board Mounts

4. Test Operation of Height Adjustera. Check for smooth operation before raising the assembled board and adjuster. A light

lubricant should be applied (spray silicone, Teflon, or white lithium) to the surfaces thatmove.

b. If the adjusting rod is turning with difficulty, check the series of 10 screws at the back ofthe height adjuster frame. If these set screws seem tight, turn them counter-clockwise,starting with the bottom two, approximately ¼ turn. Test the frame, and if required proceedto the next two. Continue until the frame moves freely. Do not loosen these too much, orthe backboard will shake when it is in play.

5. Board & Height Adjuster Onto 800 Series Mast Pipea. A come-along or similar lifting device can be attached to the structure to provide

controlled, safe lifting.b. Hoist the backboard into position starting with the board approximately ½” too high. The

board will settle downward as you release the lifting device and adjust for level and square. It is much easier to tap the board down a little than to force it up.

c. The top of the rectangular boards will finish at 13’ from the finished floor. If the floor is notinstalled yet, be sure to allow for the thickness of the future floor.

a. Raise the assembled backboard/height adjuster into position on the backboard frameand attach using the designated 6 5/8” u-bolts.

b. As you tighten the u-bolts on the mast, be sure to tighten them equally from side toside. The board will twist towards the side you are tightening. Check the board toyour lines on the floor to assure that they are square to the court.

c. Drill a hole in the mast pipe just below the bottom board mount and attach safetybolt.

8. Leveling of Boarda. Level the board – side-to-side and top to bottom.b. Make sure the board is square to the court lines.

Figure 9: Leveling the Backboard

9. Rim Attachmenta. Attach the rim to the front of the board using the supplied hardware in the rim box.b. Some breakaway rims in particular are difficult to handle so be prepared to have two people

work on this together.c. Make sure the board is level before leveling the rim.d. Tighten and continue to check the level as you proceed.e. Measurement from the top of the rim to the finished floor must measure 10 feet. If the floor

has not been installed yet then take the thickness of the future floor into account.f. Attach the net to the installed rim.

11. Power Wand (Optional Equipment)a. Assemble electric height adjuster motor as described previously.b. Mount power wand bracket to mast pipe or board mount according to drawings provided.

a. 800 series mast – PWM-800Kb. 700 series mast and wall mounts – PWM-700K

Figure 14: Jaypro Power Wand

12. Test Operation of Equipmenta. Power up entire system and activate each piece of equipment.b. Run everything all the way up and down through at least one complete cycle.c. Look for possible conflicts between various units and pieces of equipment. Notify facility

officials of any possible problems so that they can avoid damage.a. Example: Some backstop units may fold into each other when height adjusters are in

lowered position (8’setting). Backstops should only be raised when height adjustersare at the 10’ setting; likewise height adjusters should only be operated when mastsare in playing position.

13. Complete the Install a. Final adjustments are a vital and absolute part of the Install. A little extra time will now

ensure a QUALITY INSTALLATION. Take the TIME to make sure everything is workingas intended, and that there are no interferences or conflicts between various pieces ofequipment.

b. Check all hardware to make sure it is located and installed properly. Tighten all nuts andbolts.
