“It will be a different sale to years gone

by, just due to Covid-19,” Kate Hunter, president of the Japan-based Marugai

Racing, told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday. “They originally tried to cut the

number of people by 50 per cent, but they only managed to cut it by 40 per

cent because of the number of people that ended up needing to go. There

was a slight decrease from last year in the number of registered buyers, but

it’s still more registered buyers than in 2018. This year, there is also no day-of

registration, so anyone who wants to bid will have to have registered already,

just so they can keep an eye on numbers.

“They don’t have any kind of online bidding, but they do have two telephone

lines set up, including an English line. There are no foreign buyers on site either

- no foreigners can get into the country at the moment due to the pandemic.

The two registered foreign buyers are John Ferguson and Sheikh Fahad, they

both have agents who are based here in Japan and so they are likely to be active;

Sheikh Fahad’s also selling, he’s got a very established Japan presence.”

The sale has produced many of Japan’s best gallopers including

late stallions Deep Impact (Sunday Silence) and King Kamehameha

(Kingmambo) as weanlings, both who will be represented by lots over the

next two days, as well as Australian Group 1 winners Admire Rakti (Heart’s

Cry), Fierce Impact (Deep Impact) and Tosen Stardom (Deep Impact).

Others of note to have gone through the ring in the last five years have been

Group 1 winners Admire Mars (Daiwa Major), Danon Fantasy (Deep Impact),

Daring Tact (Epiphaneia), Deirdre (Harbinger), Glory Vase (Deep Impact),

Loves Only You (Deep Impact), Normcore (Harbinger), Roger Barows (Deep

Impact), World Premiere (Deep Impact) and Yoshida (Heart’s Cry).

Given so many Japanese horses are produced and raced by the Yoshida

family and their various operations, including racing clubs like U Carrot Farm

(the Lys Gracieux colours), Sunday Racing (the Delta Blues silks) and Silk

Racing (Almond Eye’s owners), there is always a surplus that allows for other

Japanese owners to get involved.

“They are still holding on to a lot,” Hunter

said. “Northern Farm is approaching 1000 broodmares alone. Between the

four clubs, where they put in 40 to 50 horses each year, and private sales, as

well as those they race alone, it takes up quite a bit of their stock but there’s

still a lot left over. That’s why the majority of horses are offered by Northern

Farm, because they have that much surplus. They always focus on buying the

best broodmares wherever they are and so, now they have so many, they have

to evaluate the stock and figure out where they are best placed.

“Looking at some of the reserves, my personal opinion is that there is

some concern about the strength of the market. When you consider some

of the pedigrees, there might be some great opportunities there, especially

when you consider that on a per capita basis, there is more black type in these

pedigrees than anywhere in the world.

“Most of these horses will sell for two, three, four times their reserve,

even more than that at times, so it might be taken with a grain of salt but

it’s something to monitor. There are at least the same numbers of buyers as

there were in 2018, more even, so that might create a strong buying bench.

There are some new buyers and some potential owners in there who will have

licences in a year or so, that might bolster the market too.”

The most significant Australian representation comes through VRC Oaks

(Gr 1, 2500m) winner Kirramosa (Alamosa), who has both a Heart’s Cry (Sunday

Silence) yearling filly and a Lord Kanaloa (King Kamehameha) weanling colt.

Kirramosa, who was sold to Northern Farm in late 2015, had her first foal

- a filly by Heart’s Cry - sell to owner Riichi Kondo for ¥62 million (A$835,000)

as a weanling in 2017. Named Admire Mimosa, she won an 1800-metre

maiden at Niigata in May.

Also among the yearlings is the second foal of two-time Group 2 winner

Lumosty (Fastnet Rock), a chestnut filly by Duramente (King Kamehameha), as

well as the third foal out of New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) winner More Than

Sacred (More Than Ready), a Just A Way (Heart’s Cry) filly.

Deep Impact will have what could be his final yearlings offered at public

auction in Japan, with the sire only producing 20-odd foals from his final season

last year. Among the 13 are half-brothers to Prix de Diane (Gr 1, 2100m) winner La

Cressonniere (Le Havre), Belmont Stakes (Gr 1, 12f) victor Palace Malice (Curlin)

and Kentucky Oaks (Gr 1, 9f) conqueror Cathryn Sophia (Street Boss), as well as

the second foal out of Team Valor’s Grade 1 winner Euro Charline (Myboycharlie).

“I’d be surprised if any more Deep Impact yearlings go through the sales

ring,” Hunter said. “He hasn’t had many foals born this year, not many more

than 15, and a number of them were out of foreign-owned mares like Vegas

Showgirl, the dam of Winx. Only a handful remain and they will likely be

spread around the racing clubs and so I don’t think they will be commercially

available. They are a rare commodity, that’s for sure.”

Hunter made mention of a couple of lots that had particularly caught her

eye during inspections in Hokkaido: “I was really impressed with Lot 98, the

half-brother to Irish Oaks winner Covert Love, I think he will have a lot of people

interested. Lot 176.html was a real eyecatcher, a Drefong colt out of a half-sister

to the dam of Makahiki. Drefong was a real powerhouse, I’m sure his yearlings

will impress a lot of people.

“The Kizunas have really caught my eye,

but I have to make mention of the Satono Aladdins as well. I know he was supposed

to go back to New Zealand and that’s been put on hold due to this pandemic,

but I think those that will have his yearlings going through the ring down there in

the coming months will be thrilled with what he’s produced in Japan. Across the

board, the comment has been, ‘What a great physical.’ Hopefully he can return to

Rich Hill Stud once we are on the other side of this virus.”

The weanlings will see the first stock of sires like Satono Diamond (Deep

Impact), Satono Crown (Marju) and Mind Your Biscuits (Posse). However,

Hunter - who is yet to see the youngsters - is excited to examine the first foals

by Dubai Turf (Gr 1, 1800m) winner Real Steel (Deep Impact), who stood last

season at Arrowfield Stud and is due to produce his first southern hemisphere

foals in the upcoming season.

“All the reports have been promising so far and I’m looking forward to seeing

them this week,” she said. “It’s an exciting time of year and those I know who have

been working with them have said only good things.”

Another weanling likely to receive interest is a bay colt out of Caulfield

Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) winner Southern Speed (Southern Image), from the first

crop of top sprinter Red Falx (Swept Overboard).

Like the rest of the live auctions that have been held in Australia, the UK and

the US in recent weeks, special measures will be taken with Covid-19 in mind.

“There is a special entrance where you must disinfect your hands and have

your temperature checked when you enter,” Hunter said. “They are doing different

things with serving food, there are seat separators and masks are mandated - you

simply won’t be allowed anywhere near the complex without a mask.

“It’s the world we live in these days, but we are just grateful to have a live

auction at all.”

Today’s yearling session will begin at 10am local time (11am AEST). Click

Knight Mariner to undergo further testsPromising three-year-old Knight Mariner

(Tavistock) will be taken to the Gatton veterinary

hospital today for further examination of the

pelvis injury he suffered when finishing second

in Saturday’s Winx Guineas (Gr 3, 1600m) at

the Sunshine Coast. An inspection after the

race indicated Knight Mariner to be sore and

it appeared he had fractured his pelvis. He was

taken to a nearby veterinary complex where he

was treated overnight with painkillers. Trainer

Tony Gollan said: "At Gatton they are able to do

even more complex tests and we will see where he

is at. To be frank, he is one of the most promising

horses I have ever trained. It is terrible for the

horse and his owners."

O’Brien hoping to build on strong seasonThe 2019-20 season has been a big one for trainer

Danny O'Brien and he believes his stable has the

firepower to continue the success into next year.

With three weeks of this season remaining, O'Brien

is closing in on 100 wins and he sits third in the

Melbourne trainers' premiership with 41 winners,

highlighted by Vow And Declare's (Declaration

Of War)Melbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) victory.

"It's been a great season for us," O'Brien said.

"The Melbourne Cup was naturally the highlight

but we've had a lot of other really nice horses

come through. Miami Bound started the season

as a maiden and she won the Oaks and Russian

Camelot started the season unraced and he won a

Derby. We've got a really nice team of horses that

have put their hand up for us this year and an even

better group heading into next year." O'Brien is

excited about the squad of horses he has heading

into the 2020-21 season. "We've got a lot of talented

young horses that are about the same position as

what Miami Bound and Russian Camelot were 12

months ago," he said. "So we're hoping that they

put their hand up for us."

Oceanex begins path to Melbourne CupCo-trainer Michael Kent Jr says Oceanex (Ocean

Park) has come back into training at Caulfield a

rounder and stronger mare in the build-up to the

Melbourne Cup. "I know it is a cliche, but she looks

outstanding," Kent Jr said. "The Ocean Park's, they

are very slow maturing and he had his breakout

season this season with his progeny that are four-

year-olds. They all get better with time and she

certainly fits that mould.” Kent Jr, who trains in

partnership with Mick Price added of Oceanex:

"The spell has done her the world of good. She put

on around 40 kilos and it's the most condition she's

had on her. She looks a lot stronger, very round, not

the athletic and lean horse before she went out.

We've got a lot to work with and it is still a long way

to go through to the Cup in November."

All roads lead to Cups for CarifThe Snowden stable may not be known as much

for the stayers as they are for their sprinter-milers

and their juveniles, but they hold high hopes that

blueblood Carif can join his sire So You Think

(High Chaparral) and his dam Norzita (Thorn

Park) as a Group 1 winner in the famous Think

Big Stud colours this spring. Carif will target the

Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) and Melbourne

Cup double, a long-term aim that has seen him

prepared with those targets in mind. "That's

the golden ball at the end of the chain," Peter

Snowden said. "He is a seasoned horse now. He

has had a couple of good preparations to give him

a good grounding. And what might help this year

is, I wouldn't think the overseas horses would be

able to travel, so it just might make an Aussie Cup

and give us a chance."

Harlech, Snapper join Moroney’s Melbourne teamMike Moroney's Melbourne team for the spring

has been bolstered by the arrival of Group 2 winner

Harlech (Darci Brahma) from New Zealand.

Harlech arrived on Wednesday morning, along

with stakes-placed rising three-year-old Snapper

(Power), to continue preparations at Moroney's

Flemington stables towards their Australian

spring campaigns. "He looked as if he was one of

the better three-year-olds in New Zealand during

the spring and the summer," Moroney said of

Harlech. "Being a four-year-old obviously the

Golden Eagle would be nice if we could get up

there (to Sydney) for it. And down here it would be

races like the Toorak Handicap and the big mile at

Flemington that would be options." Snapper is yet

to win from three starts but he placed third in the

Waikato Stud Slipper (Gr 3, 1200m) at his second

start before running fifth in the Sistema Stakes (Gr

1, 1200m). "He's a sprinter," Moroney said. "We'll

just see where he fits in but we'd like to hope that

he could be around in some stakes races over the

spring carnival."

Plenty of interest in Mystery ShotA tilt at the $5 million All Star Mile (1600m)

could be enough for connections of unbeaten

Mystery Shot (Shooting To Win) to fend off

multi-million dollar offers from Hong Kong.

Managing owner Brad Spicer confirmed that

several bloodstock agents had made enquiries

about purchasing the three-year-old after his

latest win at Caulfield on Saturday. “There were

quite a few phone calls last night and I gather

my phone will run hot this morning with agents

trying to secure him for up there,” Spicer told

RSN’s Correct Weight. “He’s got a bright future

but in terms of how high he can get to, his next

couple of starts might be able to tell us that. Is

he going to be a horse for the spring and maybe

go on to be an All Star Mile horse next year?

That’s what we’re thinking at the moment so

I think it will take a fairly big offer to wrest the

horse away from the owners.”

Griffin retires with tenth Gold Coast titleDan Griffin will retire with a record ten Gold

Coast premierships under his belt after riding a

treble at the Gold Coast on Saturday. Griffin, 39,

will hang up his saddle next week on medical

advice and he is going out in style. He needed

to ride a double to pass the sidelined Ryan

Plumb and take the lead in the premiership, but

went one better winning on Peppino (Pierro),

Delector (Pierro) and Rossmay (Real Saga) to

take him to 27 winners. "I will be emotional

next week and I am going to miss it. But at least

I can ride at the meeting knowing I have the

premiership sewn up," he said.

Young Laing off the mark Jack Laing is already looking to the future after

saddling his first ever winner courtesy of a success

for Lake Tanganyika (Crowded House) at Moe on

Saturday. “Obviously there’s a bit of expectation,

more so from the people around you, that you’ve

got to get a winner fairly quickly and there was

probably an added layer of pressure having a

last name that’s been pretty successful in the

industry,” the son of Group 1 horseman Robbie

Laing told Racing.com. “It was good to get it out

of the way but I wasn’t overly excited, which some

people might think is a pretty odd response. I’ve

got aspirations of achieving bigger and better

things with some nicer horses so I didn’t really

get too caught up in the moment of a 0-58 win at

Moe. I’m always thinking about tomorrow and

I’m keen to get some better horses in the stable

and keep climbing.”

NEW ZEALAND

Pitman double closes gap on North Island rivalsThe Michael and Matthew Pitman training

partnership provided one of the highlights at

Riccarton on Saturday when they produced

the trifecta in the sixth race on the card. Former

North Island galloper Saber (Swiss Ace) was back

to his best as he led all the way in the 1000-metre

dash for rider Tanya Jonker to defeat stablemates

Confessional (Swiss Ace) and Nellie Bly (Iffraaj)

and register his eighth career victory. Michael

Pitman had been confident of a good showing

from the veteran sprinter who had finished sixth

fresh-up last month. “I thought Saber would be

hard to beat as he went super on the first day here

last month,” he said. “He’s a good honest horse

who has run a lot of placings but he got his turn

again today.” The Pitman team also produced the

winner of the other main sprint on the day when

Turncoat (Swiss Ace) scored over 1200 metres for

four-kilogram claiming apprentice Wesley Papier.

Sweet victory for impressive maiden winnerAn impressive victory over 900 metres at the

Ellerslie trials last month indicated Sweet Molly

Malone (Rip Van Winkle) was a strong winning

chance at the venue on Saturday and so it proved

as she dashed away in the home straight to

register a comfortable two and a quarter length

victory in a maiden 1200-metre contest. Trainer

Cody Cole had been expecting a good run from

his charge, however he was in some doubt as to

whether she would even get a start after being

placed on the ballot for the race and requiring

several scratchings to make the final field. “It was

a bit of a nervous wait as I wasn’t sure if we were

going to make the field,” Cole said. “The balloted

horses from Te Rapa last weekend got in ahead of

us so it was a bit touch and go for a while there. We

made it in and she did us proud as she was three-

wide without cover for most of the journey.”

ASIA

Maurice off the markJapanese Horse of the Year Maurice (Screen

Hero) registered his first winner at Hakodate

on Saturday when the Yoshito Yahagi-trained

Kaiser Nova (2 c ex Stellar Lead by Special Week)

scored in a 1200-metre newcomers race. Ridden

by Ryusei Sakai, Kaiser Nova came from beyond

midfield to sweep past Queen’s Moon (Gutaifan)

by a length and a quarter with a neck back to

Derma Kannon (Spielberg) in third. Maurice

stood for three seasons at Arrowfield Stud, with

his first two-year-olds set to step out next season.

However, he will not return in 2020 due to travel

restrictions.

13 for Starspangledbanner

Rosemont Stud resident Starspangledbanner

(Choisir) siried his 13th individual stakes winner

when Dickiedooda (2 f ex So Dandy by Oratorio)

made it two wins from three starts with a victory

in yesterday’s Coolmore Caravaggio Tipperary

Stakes (Listed, 5f) at Cork. Successful on debut at

the Curragh last month, the Jessica Harrington-

trained filly got back to winning ways following her

unplaced effort in Royal Ascot’s Queen Mary Stakes

(Gr 2, 5f) as she beat favourite Grammata (Twilight

Son) by a length and three quarters. Chief Little

Hawk (Air Force Blue) was a further half a length

away in third. Dickiedooda is the fourth foal out of

the winning Oratorio (Danehill) mare So Dandy,

a half-sister to the Listed winners La Sylvia (Oasis

Dream) and Power Elite (Linamix). Further back

this is the family of Al Bahathri (Blushing Groom).

Starspangledbanner, who has tasted notable

success in both hemispheres both on the track and

as a sire, will stand for a fee of $19,800 inc GST.

(Acclamation) sired his 64th individual

stakes winner when British raider Althiqa (3

Prix Amandine (Listed, 1400m) at Deauville

yesterday. The Charlie Appleby-trained filly, who

was winning for the third time from four starts,

raced prominently throughout under William

(Gleneagles) finished well for third spot, another

half a length away. Althiqa is the first foal out of the

the trainer and his retained rider William Buick.

The Godolphin runner scored by a length and a

quarter from the Archie Watson-trained Glen

Shiel (Pivotal) with Dubai Station (Brazen Beau) a

head back in third to make it a British-trained 1-2-

3. Royal Crusade became the 148th stakes winner

for his sire Shamardal, who sadly died in April this

year aged 18. The colt won his maiden on debut at

Newmarket last August and has been knocking on

the door since with placings in the Champagne

Stakes (Gr 2, 7f) and Prix Thomas Bryon (Gr 3, 7f)

on his only other starts last year, before returning

with a sixth place effort in the Commonwealth

Cup (Gr 1, 6f) at Royal Ascot last month.

Classy Earthlight maintains unbeaten recordDual Group 1 winner Earthlight (3 c Shamardal

- Winters Moon by New Approach) stretched

his unbeaten record to six when proving far too

strong for his seven rivals in yesterday’s Prix

Kistena (Listed, 1200m) at Deauville. Trained

by Andre Fabre for Godolphin, the three-year-

old colt was sent off red-hot favourite for his

seasonal reappearance and he rewarded his

supporters with a comfortable two and a half

length win over Wanaway (Galiway), with Crew

Dragon (Poet’s Voice) a further length and a

half behind in third.

Watch Me back in the winning grooveWatch Me (4 f Olympic Glory - Watchful by Galileo)

posted a first win since her surprise victory in last

year’s Coronation Stakes (Gr 1, 1m) at Royal Ascot

when she took out the Prix de la Calonne (Listed,

1600m) at Deauville yesterday. Taking a notable

drop in grade for her seasonal reappearance, the

Francis-Henri Graffard-trained filly beat Norma

(New Approach) by two and a half lengths with

Thalyia (Motivator) a further two lengths behind

in third.

Four for AdlerflugFrench raider In Swoop (3 c ex Iota by Tiger

Hill) showed an impressive turn of foot in the

closing stages, having been held up by Ronan

Thomas, to take the honours in yesterday’s

Deutsches Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) at Hamburg

for Francis-Henri Graffard. He became the

14th stakes and fourth elite-level winner for

Adlerflug (In The Wings), who completed a 1-2

in the Classic with Torquator Tasso (Adlerflug)

three quarters of a length second. Grocer Jack

(Oasis Dream) was the same distance back in

third. In Swoop won on debut at Lyon Parilly on

May 15 and ran third over course and distance

on his only other start in the Prix Greffulhe (Gr

3, 2200m) last month. Adlerflug, also the sire

of top level winners Ito, Iquitos and Lacazar,

stands at Gestut Schlenderhan and his 2020 fee

was €10,000.

43 for Soldier HollowGermany’s leading sire Soldier Hollow (In The

Wings) registered his 43rd individual stakes

winner courtesy of a success for Virginia Joy

(3 f ex Virginia Sun by Doyen) in yesterday’s

Hamburger Stutenpreis (Gr 3, 2200m) at

Hamburg. The Marcel Weiss-trained three-

year-old, who had finished fourth in Group

2 company on her most recent outing, was

winning for the second time in four starts when

she beat Zamrud (Samum) by a head with For

Pleasure (Jukebox Jury) another four lengths

back in third. Soldier Hollow stands at Gestut

Auenquelle for a fee of €30,000.

Five for MaxiosCoolmore’s Maxios (Monsun) sired his fifth

individual stakes winner when German raider

Walderbe (4 c ex Waldfee by Dai Jin) landed

the Premio Carlo d’Alessio (Gr 3, 2400m) in

Rome yesterday. The Ralf Rohne-trained four-

year-old, who was a short head second in the

Premio Ambrosiano (Gr 3, 2000m) last month,

was winning his fourth race in 20 starts when

getting the better of Time Shanakill (Lord

Shanakill) and Pretending (Librettist). Dual

Group 1 winner Maxios, sire of last year’s Preis

der Diana (Gr 1, 2200m) winner Diamanta,

stands at Castlehyde Stud for a fee of €6,000.

First for Mr SpeakerBelmont Derby (Gr 1, 10f) winner Mr Speaker

(Pulpit) registered his first Grade 1 winner,

and just his second stakes winner overall, from

his first crop of runners when Speech (3 f ex

Scribbling Sarah by Freud) took out the Ashland

Stakes (Gr 1, 8.5f) at Keeneland on Saturday. The

Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners-owned Speech,

trained by Michael McCarthy, entered Saturday’s

Ashland Stakes off runner-up finishes in the Santa

Anita Oaks (Gr 2, 8.5f) and the Santa Ysabel Stakes

(Gr 3, 8.5f), both in California. Sent off at 4-1,

she pressed odds-on favourite Venetian Harbor

(Munnings) throughout before racing past her,

putting three lengths up at the line; Envoutante

(Uncle Mo) was a further three and three-quarter

lengths away in third. Mr Speaker stood for

US$10,000 at Lane’s End Farms in 2020.

Rushing Fall in rare airRushing Fall (5 m More Than Ready - Autumnal

by Forestry) joined Lady Eli (Divine Park) and

Beholder (Henny Hughes) as only the third

American horse since 1976 to win Grade 1 races

at two, three, four and five after her second

Jenny Wiley Stakes (Gr 1, 8.5f) at Keeneland

on Saturday. The Chad Brown trainee set a

new track record in scoring her fifth Grade 1

victory and her tenth overall, defeating Jolie

Olimpica (Drosselmeyer) by three-quarters of

a length with Juliet Foxtrot (Dansili) a further

half-length away in third. Owner representative

Bob Edwards said: “It's a dream come true.

Everyone wishes for a horse like this. I hope I

get another one in my racing career like her.

This is just phenomenal.”

Century of Grade 1 wins for BrownGuarana’s (4 f Ghostzapper - Magical World by

Distorted Humor) pulsating victory over Mia

Mischief (Into Mischief) in an exciting Madison

Stakes (Gr 1, 7f) at Keeneland on Saturday gave

leading trainer Chad Brown his 100th Grade

1 winner, an incredible feat given it had been

less than a decade since his maiden success

at the highest level. Brown, who first took up

training in 2007, has become renowned as one

of America’s leading turf trainers with horses

like Sistercharlie (Myboycharlie), Bricks And

Mortar (Giant’s Causeway), Uni (More Than

Ready), Lady Eli (Divine Park), Flintshire

(Dansili), Sea Calisi (Youmzain) and Bobby's

Kitten (Kitten’s Joy) among others. However, he

brought up the milestone on dirt. “It’s a whole

body of work from 12 and a half years now of

training,” Brown said. “It has to do with my team

of co-workers, owners, and horses both present

and past. They all contributed to the 100 Grade

1s. God willing if everything stays intact, we’ll

work on the next 100. But we’re going to enjoy

this for now.”

75 for BernardiniDarley stallion Bernardini (A P Indy) brought up his

75th individual stakes winner when Art Collector

(3 c ex Distorted Legacy by Distorted Humor)

handsomely took out the Blue Grass Stakes (Gr 2,

9f) at Keeneland on Saturday. The Thomas Drury

Jr-trained Art Collector, who was entering off two

allowance wins at Churchill Downs, was sent off as

the marginal second-favourite. Having raced handy

throughout, though, he quickly dispatched favourite

Swiss Skydiver (Daredevil), racing away to win by

three and a half lengths over the filly with Rushie

(Liam’s Map) a further four and a quarter lengths

away in third. It was a first graded stakes winner for

Drury, who now looks to have a legitimate Kentucky

Derby (Gr 1, 10f) contender. Bernardini stood for

US$40,000 in 2020.

58 for Uncle MoCoolmore’s Uncle Mo (Indian Charlie) brought up

his 58th individual stakes winner with the victory

of Enola Gay (3 f ex Dakota Queen by War Front)

in the Appalachian Stakes (Gr 2, 1m) at Keeneland

on Saturday. The Shug McGaughey-trained Enola

Gay came with a barnstorming run to grab Walk In

Marrakesh (Siyouni) by a nose with favourite Alms

(City Zip) a neck away in third. Uncle Mo stood at

Coolmore’s Ashford Stud for US$125,000 this year.

Rekindling beaten on Irish returnMelbourne Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Rekindling

(High Chaparral) finished sixth as favourite on

his first run in Europe in almost three years at

Leopardstown on Saturday. Stepping out as top-

weight in an amateur riders’ race, the Joseph

O’Brien-trained Rekindling was beaten four and

a half lengths over a mile and a half under Tom

Hamilton. It was his first run since finishing last in

the 2019 Australian Cup (Gr 1, 2000m), his only run

since his 2017 Melbourne Cup success. O’Brien’s

assistant Brendan Powell said: "You'd have to be

delighted with him. I know he was rated a lot higher

than them but he's had a long time off. Tom said he

settled lovely in the race, had a bit of a blow, but he

loved the way he finished in a messy run race. He'd

love a real true gallop the whole way but at least he

was hitting the line running. Whether he's the horse

he was I don’t know, but I'm sure there is a nice

staying race to be won with him somewhere."

Pinatubo (Shamardal) showed a

return to the level of form which

made him the highest-rated

juvenile in Europe for a quarter

of a century when he belatedly got his three-

year-old campaign up and running with a win

in yesterday’s Prix Jean Prat (Gr 1, 1400m) at

Deauville.

Despite suffering defeat in both the 2,000

Guineas (Gr 1, 1m) and St James’s Palace Stakes

(Gr 1, 1m) this term, the Charlie Appleby-trained

colt was still sent off a red-hot favourite, and he

duly obliged as he crossed the line under William

Buick three-quarters of a length ahead of his

nearest pursuer, the Aidan O’Brien-trained Lope Y

Fernandez (Lope De Vega). Malotru (Casamento),

like the winner trained in Newmarket, completed

a clean sweep for the raiders, another two and a

half lengths away in third.

“This is what we saw from Pinatubo as

a two-year-old,” said a delighted Charlie

Appleby, who went on to complete a treble on

the Deauville card courtesy of wins with Royal

Crusade (Shamardal) and Althiqa (Dark Angel).

“He travels and then has that electric turn

of foot. William said that he was sat last at half-

way with not a lot of room but, before he knew

it, he was up there on the bridle again and

travelling as well as he wanted to be in a race

of this calibre.

“I am delighted for the horse and delighted

for His Highness Sheikh Mohammed, who has

had a lot of faith in Pinatubo. Well done to the

whole team because, when you get turned over

in the first couple of races after being favourite

for the Guineas over the winter, it is hard to take.

“We have always felt that Pinatubo is a very

courageous horse. Take nothing away from the

winners on his last two starts over a mile, they

have outstayed us on the day, but we were always

confident coming back to seven furlongs today

that it would have to be a good horse to beat him.

Most importantly, I am pleased for Pinatubo.”

Whether Pinatubo does now step back up

in distance remains to be seen. “Going back to

a mile is something that we need to talk about,”

Appleby continued. “He does travel extremely

well and has that acceleration. He is going to be

one of those milers that you are going to have

to ride with so much confidence and just hope

that you get there.

“We will enjoy today. He is a multiple Group

1 winner at two and now a Group 1 winner at

three, so I am delighted for everybody involved.

His sire Shamardal had a fantastic year last year

with his juveniles and this year with his three-

year-olds, so it’s great for the team and well-

deserved for this horse. He can have a little rest

now and we can decide where we go next.”

Shamardal, who sadly died earlier this year

aged 18, completed a Group race treble on

the Deauville when Royal Crusade recorded a

comfortable victory in the Prix de Ris-Orangis

(Gr 3, 1200m) after France’s Champion two-

year-old Earthlight made a successful seasonal

debut when easily taking the Prix Kistena

(Listed, 1200m).

Buick, who has been on board the colt for all

of his five Group 1 starts, said: “Charlie and Sheikh

Mohammed always said that Pinatubo was one of

the best horses they had ever seen and he is very

fast, as he showed there. He ran very well over a

mile in the 2,000 Guineas and very well in the St

James’s Palace Stakes but he is very fast.

“When you ride him, he gives you a lot of

confidence. He travels very well and is a very

straightforward horse to ride. He has a very

good mind and I don’t think I have ever ridden

a horse with a turn of foot like he has.”

Homebred Pinatubo is out of the stakes-

winning Dalakhani (Darshaan) mare Lava Flow,

who also has a 2019 filly foal by Teofilo (Galileo)

and colt foal by Shamardal. Lava Flow hails from

the top stallion producing family of Invincible

Spirit (Green Desert) and Kodiac (Danehill).

BY DAVID MORGAN | HKJC_RACING

Zac Purton locked up a fourth Hong

Kong champion jockey title when

Fast Most Furious (Lope De Vega)

carried him past the post for his

144th win of the campaign in yesterday’s Class

1 Sha Tin Mile Trophy Handicap (1600m).

The Australian ace had an eight-win lead

at the start of the 11-race card, and that was

cut to seven when rival Joao Moreira pinched

the opener. But with the Brazilian suspended

for the finale at Happy Valley on Wednesday,

Purton put the matter beyond ‘ifs’ in the

afternoon’s fourth contest, thanks to the David

Hall-trained galloper.

“It’s unfortunate that it doesn’t go down to

the last day and make it more interesting, but

Zac’s put his hand up and is a deserved winner,

I think,” Hall said.

Purton enjoyed a sweet run in the feature.

A smart break from gate one enabled the

champ to ease his mount back and shift to a

one-off position, sixth of the eight runners;

switched wider on the turn, the seven-year-old

revved upside market leader General’s Delight

(Fastnet Rock) and quickened past at the 250

metre point, with his ears pricking.

Preciousship (Iffraaj) chased hard under

10lb claimer Jerry Chau but had to settle for

second, half a length off the victor, who stopped

the clock at 1m 34.28s.

“Zac just sat there patiently, knowing he

had the big weight. The pacing wasn’t super-

fast so it wasn’t absolutely perfect for the horse

but it was a smart ride and got the job done,”

Hall said.

“He’s been a really good soldier for the

stable, this horse. He just keeps turning up

week in and week out; he’s won on the same

day again.”

The Lope De Vega gelding won at this same

fixture last year, when successful in the Class

2 Hong Kong Racehorse Owners Association

Trophy Handicap (1400m). This time, he took

his career tally to five wins from 29 races, having

placed a neck third at his previous start in the

Lion Rock Trophy Handicap (Gr 3, 1600m),

behind Ka Ying Star (Cityscape) and Southern

Legend (Not A Single Doubt).

“It’s a good bit of karma I reckon because he

deserved to win the last race,” Hall said. “It was

a pretty good performance. It was just a matter

of holding him together and getting the luck to

go his way.

“There was a bit of a concern with the weight

difference with Douglas’ horse (General’s

Delight), he’s progressive and we had to give

him 12lb so we needed a smart ride from Zac,

and, as we all expect from him, he delivered in

spades.

Hall is one of four trainers newly-licensed

to utilise the Hong Kong Jockey Club’s facility at

Conghua and his staff will be operational there

from Wednesday.

“We’ve all seen the results from Conghua

have picked up a lot in the last six months and

my own numbers have picked up and improved

a bit, so this has come at the right time for me

and I’m looking forward to it, because it will suit

some horses, definitely,” the trainer said.

Hall fired a double when

Sumstreetsumwhere (Highly Recommended)

rifled away with the Class 4 Big Profit Handicap

(1400m) under Blake Shinn. It was the five-year-

old’s second win at start 32, and first victory for

Hall at his second start since transferring from

the Peter Ho stable.

Hong Kong racing continues at Happy

Valley on Wednesday, 15 July.
