How i lost weigHt naturallyLiz Woodhouse had always felt dissatisfied with being overweight but the 53-year old piano teacher from Brighton had resigned herself to it. Until she got some surprising benefits from a breathing method for calming the mind. When Liz started the Buteyko breathing method in May 2008, she was a size 18-20. For 35 years she’d learnt the art of wearing

dark, voluminous clothes and avoiding looking at photos of herself. “When I was really hungry I definitely had no off button and

devoured salty foods,” she says. “I didn’t know the feeling of being able to go without food for long periods, and I wore enveloping

clothes that could hide the problem.” Fast forward three years and the 5ft 6in mum of three has lost 1.5 stone and is down to

a roomy size 16. What’s more, she loves strenuous walking and yoga and her new hobby is clothes shopping for outfits that

accentuate her waist. “After a few weeks I noticed I had less appetite and I felt much calmer about the stresses of family life,” she

says. “Since then I’ve had my skirts taken in because they were literally falling off me.”

Liz’s teacher Martha Roe from LearnButeyko says that craving stodgy food is simply a side-effect of overbreathing. Calming the

breathing changes your whole body chemistry, she says, lifting it out of “fight or flight” mode. “My students notice their appetite

changes within a few days of starting the Buteyko Method,” she says. “It’s because as you raise the carbon dioxide levels in

More and more we are turning to over the counter diagnostic kits to help in giving

us a better understanding of our health. It used to be just home blood pressure monitors that were common but there are an array of self help tests. I shopped around a bit and made some interesting conclusions.

Often, my patients will either require or ask for further testing. This is there to help the diagnostic process and will often bring up areas of health that have not been covered with conventional tests. Approximately 50% of people I see go on to have blood, stool or urine tests, copies of which are sent to their GP if appropriate, for further action. Generally these tests cover more chronic conditions than acute and look at the body in more detail.

This month Kate Arnold looks at diagnostic testing, not only available from many therapists, but also what’s on the high street and whether it’s any good.

What testing is available through a nutritionist? Stool testing: these are incredibly popular and after serious conditions are ruled out with colonoscopies and endoscopies etc they prove invaluable at looking at the microbiology of the bowel in more detail. They assess, gut flora levels, yeast infections and lesser known parasites that can particularly help in the diagnosis of Irritable bowel syndrome. Adrenal function: a 28 day saliva test measuring DHEA and cortisol - useful for diagnosing “burnout” or reasons behind long term fatigue or insomnia. Hormonal profile: similar to the adrenal function test - a 28 day saliva test thats gives a curve of exactly what your hormones are

doing on a day to day basis over a month- really useful for any kind of PMT/PMS/PCOS etc. Standard blood tests: Full blood count, thyroid, B12, cholesterol: these are standard tests that are done through the GP but can also be done by qualified therapists. Functional B vitamins: another very popular test particularly useful for those with mental health disorders/stress anxiety and depression - this measures individual B vitamins i.e. B1, B2, and B6, which are often low in these disorders. Essential fatty acid profile: invaluable for those with inflammatory disorders, lupus, eczema etc. You can assess your omega 3 and 6 status, and the ratio between the two which is key in inflammation.

Red cell magnesium: this goes one step further than serum magnesium and looks at what is getting into the cells on a cellular level - I use it when there is cardiac arrythmia and chronic fagtiue- this is often very low in many people. Vitamin D: essential for the immune system and another test I often run with Chronic fatigue syndromes or those spending more time inside/out of the sun. Allergy and food intolerance: oddly I don’t use these as often as you would think - I don’t rate food intolerance testing - but will do IgE allergy testing as its rarely available on the NHS - there are a wide range of panels you can do or test one item in particular that you suspect. I find these tests useful in real allergy where someone cannot find what food/drug/plant is causing the problem. Homocysteine: not readily available on the NHS and very useful in patients who would like to prevent heart disease, strokes, Alzheimer’s etc. Often high in those with heart disease.

Panel testsIf someone wanted to try and prevent osteoporosis I might recommend a panel of testsFor example:-osteoporosis, serum mineral profile, essential fatty acids and vitamin D.

ADHD (attention deficit hyperactive disorder) I’d recommend B1,B3, B12, folate, EFA’s, serum mineral profile, red cell magnesium, vitamin C and ferritin.

Heart disease I’d recommend B6, B12, folate, EFA’s, chromium and red cell magnesium. . From lactose breath tests to CoQ10, you name it, it can be tested! It is also often better to test if you are going to take a supplement on a longer term basis. Whilst I appreciate that not everyone can afford these tests, some of them are much cheaper than you would think. Diagnostic testing starts at about £10 and can go up to several hundred depending on what you need. They are helpful in forming a better picture of exactly how your body is functioning and can aid in speeding up recovery.

What’s available on the High Street? There are literally hundreds of home testing kits online and on the high street - I had no idea there were so many. These are the most popular:Blood sugar monitors, vitamin D profile, osteoporosis screen, coeliac screen, allergy testing, food intolerance testing, prostate cancer kit, stomach ulcer kit, bowel cancer kit and blood pressure machines. In particular I looked at the following: Boots Cholesterol Test. Price £12.25. It measures the total cholesterol only, so no HDL/LDL. I’m not sure why you wouldn’t see your GP for this. As we now know the ratio between HDL and LDL is so important this test does not give you the complete picture. Biotech Biocard Coeliac Test. Price £20.42. I think I’d want a consultant or my GP to do this test as it’s a serious disease, needing expert help and support.

Boots Home Bowel Test. Price £12.25. Tests for blood in the stool - so what happens if you find blood, will you definitely go and see your GP (who will only test it again) or will you sit at home too anxious to do anything about the result? Novagon Menopause Strip. Price: £16.35. I could see the point of this test. However its only useful if you know that you are not going to take HRT. If you have decided you want to try HRT, then you would need to see your GP who would do blood tests anyway. Boots Pharmaceutical Multi Allergy Test. Price £19.99. This could be useful if you had a mild allergy and wasn’t sure what inhalent it was. Waiting lists are long for referral to allergy specialists - so this might get you some way to finding out what the allergy was- but its a little hit and miss for me. Boots Blood Glucose Test. Price. £25.29. Failed to tell you that blood sugar is raised after a meal, or ingestion of sugar. I don’t have diabetes and recently tested how high my blood sugar went after eating cake with glucose fructose syrup - it was a high - 12 mmol. If I’d done the test, I would have thought I’d got diabetes. Not enough information.

Selfcheck Health Test . Price £15.30. Measuring for raised PSA levels for prostate cancer. Does not tell you that they are raised after exercise, sex and a UTI.

There are many self testing kits on the high street and as seen above, some are aimed at conditions as serious as prostate and bowel cancer, stomach ulcers as well as uti, blood glucose and cholesterol levels. Whilst spending some time in various chemists and on line I’ve picked up quite a few and have to say I was a little concerned. Some of the instructions were not that clear to start with, and I’m not sure unless you were well qualified if you would chose the right kit in the first place.

I am also concerned about a false positive result. This may cause fear or anxiety when you may actually be well, or worse a false negative that might actually stop you getting medical help in the first place.

Let’s take high cholesterol for instance. This can be linked to heart disease but it can also be a symptom of an under active thyroid - the high street test isn’t going to tell you that, but your GP could. Most of the tests I found were between £5 and £30. The only problem I have is that if you purchase them and they are positive, your GP will ask for the test to be repeated anyway so I’m not really sure the point of most of them.

I’ve never recommended any

of my patients to try self test kits. The only two worth their weight in gold are blood pressure machines, (particularly if you have white coat syndrome as many peoples blood pressure while relaxed at home can be lower than in the surgery) and the blood glucose monitor, invaluable for diabetics. I can to a point see how men might find these home kits appealing, particularly with conditions of the prostate but do we really want to be trusting a high street test which will not give us a full picture anyway?

What about back up? You always need someone to talk through the test results with you otherwise you can be left high and dry as to what to do next. So clearly, you can see I’m not a fan of high street tests. Many of my patients have done their cholesterol and the test for coeliac and again I’d only suggest that they get it done properly with a GP anyway.

So in conclusion if you are in any doubt about your health, your GP should always be your first port of call regardless of symptoms and conditions.

The new year is here and with it an opportunity to learn something new, why not make it your resolution to stock up on some interesting books about herbs, herbal remedies and medicinal horticulture!

The RHS calls its large tome on the subject an ‘encyclopedia’ – and so it is too! Full title ‘The Royal Horticulture Society Encyclopedia of Herbs and their Uses’, it is vital for everybody with an

interest in the subject.Covering over a thousand herbs, it is fully illustrated with excellent photographs that identify every species included in the book. The catalogue section includes an introductory description of each genus with a botanical description of every species or cultivar - plus a list of common names at the foot of each page.The section devoted to the herb dictionary contains comprehensive information about the uses of herbal plants, the parts of the plant used and brief notes about growing and harvesting. Legal restrictions are covered although, because of the complexity of this subject, not in finite

detail. The section on designing herb gardens is delightful - and the list of herbal books dating back to circa 300BC (Western) - 1,000BC (Chinese) - is fascinating. This is a big book – over 400 pages – that informs, educates – and entertains! Check out the price – it may well be available on offer in some bookshops and other retailers.‘Complete Herbal’ is a much smaller book that represents excellent value at just £9.99. David Hoffman, the author, trained with the National Institute of Medical Herbalists after which he ran a successful practice in Wales and was subsequently appointed Director of

What is polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)?

In each menstrual cycle, follicles grow on the ovaries. Within those follicles eggs develop, one of which will reach maturity faster than the others and be released into the fallopian tubes. This is known as ovulation. The remaining follicles (sometimes hundreds) will degenerate. In the case of polycystic ovaries, however, the ovaries are much larger than normal, and there are a series of undeveloped follicles that appear in clumps, rather like a bunch of grapes. Polycystic ovaries are not particularly troublesome and in many cases they will not even affect your fertility. Where the problem starts, however, is when the cysts cause a hormonal imbalance, leading to a series of other symptoms. These symptoms are the difference between suffering from PCOS and from polycystic ovaries. So a woman can have polycystic ovaries without having PCOS but all women with PCOS will have polycystic ovaries.Symptoms: • absent, infrequent or irregular periods• infertility - you need to ovulate to become

PCOS is the most common hormonal imbalance in women of childbearing age and unfortunately it is a major cause of infertility. Polycystic ovarian syndrome is something I come across frequently in my practice. Skin and weight problems are the most common issues, along with irregular or absent periods, and excess body hair.I use Herbal Medicine alongside nutrition when looking at these problems. I usually advise a low GI ( Glycaemic Index ) diet or a restricted carbohydrate diet to help achieve and maintain a stable weight.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is known to be the most

common form of arthritis and is also one of the most common causes of disability in adults. The symptoms of OA usually appear in middle-aged adults and affect both men and women, equally. This form of arthritis tends to run in families and is easily acquired through obesity, long-term athletics, and physical injuries.Dr. Raj, Beverly Hills based double board certified orthopedic surgeon and fitness expert, has seen multiple cases of OA in his athletic patients, performers, and elderly, and says that weight has a tremendous affect on the way your joints hold up. “When someone is 10 pounds overweight, it adds 50 pounds of pressure while walking, an increase of 5 times the original amount which leads to the unnecessary tearing and

stressing of your body’s natural scaffolding,” Dr. Raj explains.

Aside from genetics and being overweight, the environment and the way you exercise can also cause symptoms of OA.

However, with so many calls on our savings these days, few of us actually think about planning for that eventuality. I’ve recently been advising a number of families on ways to fund care costs for their elderly relatives – helping them to understand the somewhat complex rules.

Despite it being one of the more punitive ‘taxes’ around (currently 100% charged on assets over £23,250) most people I see are not fully aware of the rules, or indeed the costs, around paying for long term care. So, when they are faced with a potential weekly bill of £1,000, for example, to say it comes as a shock is an understatement.

When someone is going into care, or has gone into care - and it is not by their own choice -there are two assessments that should be carried out:

• A Financial Assessment• A Care Needs AssessmentThe first is the one that becomes quickly apparent to most. The local authority will advise that if your assets (possibly including your house if no one else lives there) are valued above £23,250, you will be expected to fund any care costs yourself until the assets are reduced to this level and you will still be expected to contribute towards some of the cost until they are reduced further to £14,250.

But if you qualify under the latter assessment, your financial situation could be irrelevant.

If the primary need for care is a health-related, then the NHS may fund the total cost of care. In this instance, you may lose the right to choose which care home is selected, as this will be decided by the local authority. While it is NHS funded, it is still

the local authority which holds the budget, so it can be a bit of a postcode lottery - but this may be preferable to paying say, £1,000 per week.

As you can imagine, the latter is becoming increasingly hard to obtain as government budgets across the board are being slashed. As such, many will simply be declined as only the most severe cases obtain approval.

Speaking to a solicitor recently, he said it was, sadly, more likely to obtain the funding by fighting for it after the death of the person in care. This is probably because, in this situation, the cost of care is then known to the NHS/local authority whereas, in the beginning, when someone enters care, it is not.

In the end it makes long term care a topic that will continue to dominate people’s lives as they

get older and exploring all of your options makes sense. Sally inched toward the scales, ten pairs of

eyes drilling into her back. She stood on the scales as lightly as she could. The numbers span forward, zigzagging around for what seemed an age, until their final judgement.

“Ooh what happened there?” asked the group leader, eyes showing exaggerated concern.

Sally tried to hide her devastation under a laugh “I’ll be extra good next week”. She was at this point, unaware of an emerging feeling that would take her to the chip shop on her way home.As she drove home,

she was unaware that she saw a poster of skinny Eva Longoria “eating” a Magnum. The chips felt good. Why did they feel so good? She was unaware that they felt to her like her childhood Friday nights, the end of school week,”chip night”.

Why did she now feel so bad? Chips eaten, only a bitter taste of weakness and self-disgust remaining. Chocolate will lift her mood….

Liz suffered panic attacks, anxiety, claustrophobia, agoraphobia and compulsive disorder

for 29 years from the age of 11 years old. Her life was blighted in many ways as she was branded by her doctors as having a mental health issue with panic disorder and was offered prescription drugs at age 13 which she refused. She eventually gave in to the doctors’ constant offer of pills for anxiety as her symptoms worsened to the point of giving up her life but her attacks continued. She had cognitive behavioural therapy and this sorted her out psychologically but the attacks were still happening.

She tried to have as normal a life as possible as she had a friendly, cheerful and ambitious nature, but ‘breathed’ manually for herself during waking hours, had psychotic thoughts, had attacks whilst relaxing or was woken up from sleep with breathing problems, shook violently after an attack, had red lined eyes, had a constant

hunger for food, was constantly hyper, had memory loss, missed important events, talked at speed, felt confused and disorientated, looked and acted like she was on drugs, felt she was dying every day and night with heart attack symptoms, held onto walls to get to work, saw bright flashing lights, suffered nausea and many more symptoms. Her inner drive and personality kept her going as she knew that she was ‘sane’ even after suffering all these events and did not give up on finding a solution.

Her doctors continued to offer therapy and prescription drugs but none of these had worked in the past to cure the attacks and so she continued on for years and years in the same vicious circle of events with no solution.

At age 39, something made her cut caffeine out of her drinks and her attacks reduced. This was a revelation and she started food diaries. She cut all additives, chemicals, preservatives, and alcohol from her diet and all her conditions

reduced drastically again within a few weeks. It took another few months, while she tested out different products, to find that at least 8 chemicals and additives were the triggers for her attacks and brought her symptoms on in minutes. Other investigative theories of hers then completely removed Panic Attacks, Anxiety, Claustrophobia, Agoraphobia and Compulsive Disorder from her life just after her 40th birthday.

Speirs’ says “Whilst I was writing my book (The Panic Free Steps) and gathering my evidence, I was having to revisit my past. Everything was fresh in my mind and that made me look at the marketing of foods and drinks in today’s heavily funded advertisements.

Walking through the supermarket, I was shocked to see an Aisle named ‘Energy Drinks’. This means more money for the supermarket and the makers of the products and more ill health for us and our children.”

in Energy Drinks can offset our sensitive systems and set off Panic Attacks and Anxiety, in children and young adults especially. Adults are affected also and the effects of caffeine, CO2 in products and sweeteners can be extreme.

In an abstract from Health Care Providers, extracted from Speirs’ new ebook, she shows that they have found increasing amounts of young adults experiencing negative effects of caffeine.

Another abstract from controlled laboratory tests, quoted in Speirs’ book, is the evidence of what caffeine is capable of doing.

“Excessive caffeine ingestion leads to symptoms that overlap with those of many psychiatric

disorders. Caffeine is implicated in the exacerbation of anxiety and sleep disorders, and people with

eating disorders often misuse it. It antagonises adenosine

receptors, which may potentiate dopaminergic activity and exacerbate psychosis.” *

Speirs’ book then follows her investigations with other chemicals and additives in our everyday foods and drinks and the environment with mind-blowing evidence that these elements alone bring on all the panic symptoms in healthy humans. For those suffering with depression or anxiety and panic attack sufferers, the effects of these substances are excessive.

When you are alerted to a health issue for yourself or your family, the extra care that you do take in reading labels on foods, drinks, over-the-counter medicines, becomes an everyday occurrence but this should be

something you always check as there are hidden chemicals in most of the foods we buy in the Supermarket. In a lot of foods and drinks, the companies use sweeteners, which have been passed by our government as safe but Liz found very recent evidence that contradicts that. One particular sweetener, when ingested, breaks down to embalming fluid and was actually retracted from manufacturing in the 70’s as it was found to make holes in rat’s brains!

Unfortunately, Speirs’ proves in her book that with her lifespan, greed by drug and food companies, the ‘Greenhouse Effect’ and scientifically controlled laboratory tests that are not made available to the general public, that we indeed live in a dangerous world.

Speirs wrote her book to tell her story of everyday struggles with life and the amazing revelations that have brought her back to a normal life. In doing so, she hopes that everyone at least reads her book to make themselves aware of the hidden dangers for them and their children and to help people with any illness realise that there is hope out there, whatever your condition may be and that you can be in control of your own body through your diet.

a sugar-or-salt-seeking machine. In 2005, fascinating research from the University of California revealed the link between stress and the consumption of comfort food was real. Researchers fed two groups of rats a diet of rat chow and sugar water but put one of the groups under extreme stress. It was this group that gulped down its sugar water. But this effect isn’t exclusive to rats. Human studies too have demonstrated that high cortisol is associated with increased appetite especially cravings for sugar, salt and processed fats. One study found premenopau-sal women who secreted more cortisol during and after novel laboratory stressors chose to consume more foods high in sugar and fat. This ‘using’ of junk

food to make yourself feel better is habit-forming. The more you do it, the more you want to do it and habitual stress eating can lead to weight gain of the ‘hard-to-shift’ variety simply because it becomes your default way of dealing with pressure.

St James’s for Wellbeing, I was attending the French Tourist Office’s Alps 2012 preview. Sud-denly I saw, in juxtaposition, the names of two Alpine resorts – Val d’Isere and Portes du Soleil, and at once the 25-year chasm that separated my visits vanished, and my life flashed before me.

I was in my 20s when I visited Val d’Isere. At the time I was Paris-based, on the first rung of an international advertising career. Colgate-Palmolive SA was at today’s La Defense and I commuted from an apartment on the Left Bank at Place St. Michel opposite the Notre Dame. Life was good. An Irish friend was a model at Chanel engaged to a Russian Count horse-trainer and

I’d spent the week-end before I visited the ski resort in

the Aga Khan’s Box at Longchamp. Then I doubled my salary and career prospects by moving to New York City.

It was in the States that I met Myrlie, the black Mississippian widow of the assassinated civil rights leader, Medgar Evers, on whose life CBS TV would later option my screenplay. Suddenly what I was doing with my life was placed into perspective. And an-yone who has perused the pag-es of Wellbeing Magazine knows that it does not matter how high the salary, you can’t fight across the grain. I changed professions overnight – 6 months later I was given a book publishing deal from Doubleday on the subject of the Conquistadors “God, Gold & Glory” and overnight I was no longer in advertising but had re-invented myself as an author and broadcaster. I had prom-ised Myrlie Evers that I would write a book on Africa before

the colonisers and dedicate it to Medgar’s memory.

In the meantime, I have writ-ten for Newsweek in Australia, tracking down heroin smug-glers, scooping Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen, Queensland’s Premier, wire-tapping his political foes, and interviewing the alleged Ma-fia killers of anti-drugs crusader, Donald Mackay. For LA Maga-zine, I wrote about the daughter of a Kent sheep farmer, who once owned a 25-mile coastal rancho Malibu, and kept out all-comers with guns; interviewed international film-stars, pop sing-ers and made BBC World Serv-ice broadcasts in Switzerland, the USA, and Africa where I was arrested for espionage in Tanza-nia, chased by a cobra at a re-mote Ethiopian highland airstrip, lived cheek-by-jowl with Osama bin Laden & Carlos the Jackal in Khartoum, and In Libya’s Tripoli, Colonel Gaddafi posed for me in full military regalia, the dictator’s same red and gold braid cap I saw last month on the head

of a jubilant rebel. It was when Nelson Mandela congratulated me on my upcoming book on pre-colonial Africa that my life had swung full circle, and I was keeping my promise to Myrlie. Almost everyone has clutter, but hoarders take it to extremes, suffering a significant reduction in quality of life. This might involve a reluctance to go out for fear of experiencing the compulsion to pick up ‘valuables’ or ‘useful’ items, or it might make the home virtually uninhabitable or even dangerous due to rooms stacked with clutter. While research estimates that 1 in 50 people may have a severe hoarding problem, it could affect as many as 1 in 20 to a smaller degree, still causing distress.Some level of unhappiness is always present, either as the result of a cluttered and disorganised home

or, more frequently; unhappiness is actually the cause of the clutter building up. Many problems start as a result of a traumatic event: illness, death of a loved one, divorce, stress at work, or loss of a job are all situations that can lead organised, well-balanced people into depression, disorganisation and an inability to cope with normal everyday living. Suitcases and boxes still not unpacked from a house move years earlier, piles of clothing covering furniture, food rotting in cupboards, a year’s newspapers or magazines piled up on the floor are all typical results of this lack of order. Unfinished

projects or expensive items bought for hobbies can be a great source of stress or guilt and a fear of loss can also cause an obsessive tendency to collect things or an inability to let go of possessions, even useless or broken items. Recent trends in cooking and eating suggest that we are finally learning to slow down and appreciate

every tasty nourishing mouthful instead of seeing food simply as necessary fuel for our bodies. Restaurants dedicated to the careful preparation of high-quality locally sourced organic ingredients, lovingly cooked and served, are springing up in every town.

A similar revolution is occurring in exercise – Scaravelli Yoga, Pilates and Tai Chi classes are gaining popularity in the UK now, and are starting to challenge the high-energy cardio-vascular stress & strain of the sweaty gym.

Tai Chi for example is an ancient form of slow, graceful and rhythmic exercise which originated in China, and is often being performed early in the morning when the air is at its freshest. Tai Chi is sometimes referred to as ‘meditation in movement’ or ‘swimming in air’ for externally that is how it appears. It is a soft martial art, quite unlike karate, ju jitsu or any of the ‘hard’ martial arts which rely on force and speed.

What does Tai Chi do?Tai Chi strengthens our internal energy, and allows it to flow more freely through the body. It is gentle and non-violent, though after much practice it is an extremely effective form of self defence. Classes tend to be co-operative rather than

competitive – there are no grades or belts to achieve, and the emphasis is on small amounts of regular practice. Normally a new ‘posture’ is learned every week – in Tai Chi this is a series of fluid, flowing movements rather than a static pose.

Although Tai Chi can eventually be used in self-defence, and many classes incorporate some of the practical applications, it is initially practiced for its health-giving benefits. It is particularly useful for calming the mind and body, increasing alertness and body awareness, and for developing concentration and sensitivity. Tai Chi helps with balance and posture, with mobility and stability and most students report a greater sense of ‘groundedness’.

Can anyone do it?People of all ages and abilities can benefit from Tai Chi. No special equipment or uniform is required - loose, comfortable clothing is all you need, and flat-soled shoes if you have them (not trainers) although Tai Chi can be performed in socks or bare feet. Tai Chi is one of the gentlest types of exercise, and provided you’re able to stand unaided you can easily practice and enjoy Tai Chi.

Will Tai Chi help my balance?Tai Chi is now being recommended by many doctors to improve balance and posture, and as a way of helping

to prevent falls particularly for elderly people. In 2011, the BBC and The Daily Telegraph both published the recommendation to take up Tai Chi.

At our Lewes & Newhaven Tai Chi schools in Sussex, we have carried out small-scale studies, based on subjective self-assessment of improvement in posture, balance, concentration and spatial awareness – with 94% positive and 6% neutral results. Final year Physiotherapy students from the University of Brighton had similar findings when carrying out objective standardised testing over one term at our Lewes Tai Chi school. They measured reach, balance, and length of time that new students could stand on one leg without falling, both before and after a 10 week course. Nine out of ten participants improved their scores, with one remaining the same as before the course.
