January Marks National Mentoring Month

January 2017 marks the 15th anniversary of National Mentoring Month. President Barack Obama joined the efforts through a presidential proclamation:

This year Big Brother Big Sisters of Cumberland & Salem Counties recognize that in good times and bad, it is the Bigs that show their Littles that they matter, they are enough, and that a successful adult is continuously on their side when no one else may be. Bigs were mailed the above sticker for “I am a Mentor Day” on Thursday, January 12th, 2017 and asked to share a photo of the Big and Little showing off the sticker!

National Mentoring Month is an annual, high-profile campaign to draw attention to the need for more volunteer mentors to help America’s young people achieve success in life.

Quotes: From a Little Brother: My Big Brother was exactly what

I needed at a time when I needed someone so desperately.

From a Little Sister: I can't imagine my life without my

Big Sisters by my side. She's more than a match made

through Big Brothers Big Sisters. She's a best friend,

teacher, most importantly my Sister.

Melissa was a happy child, full of life with a wonderful personality. After losing her mom to cancer before her second birthday, Melissa was raised by her dad and grandparents. Melissa loved reading, nature, laughter, family, and friends. In May 2015, at the age of 8, she was tragically killed in a car accident in Millville.

Melissa’s grandmother, Agnes Sharp, keeps Melissa’s memory alive by reading to children in the schools and through the creation of the Memorial Reading Garden at Rieck Avenue School in Millville.

Additionally, under the guidance of Agnes and their parents, Melissa’s school mates and friends participate in community projects to keep Melissa’s memory alive. This group is known as the “Melissa Project”. Agnes supported Big Brothers Big Sisters in the past, so one of the first projects was “Melissa’s Mittens” at the 2015 Christmas Party. At the 2016 Christmas party the Melissa Project ran a craft table for attendees to make custom book marks.

That’s a Wrap!

Thirty volunteers helped wrap gifts for the Christmas Party and sponsored families. It looks like every room in the office building was full of paper, presents, and people!

The Cumberland County Bar Association hosted a beautiful Breakfast with Santa for many of our families. We are so thankful for their support and generosity, providing a delicious breakfast, a fun time visiting with Santa and his friends, and presents for all the children!

BIG THANK YOU!

Santa's elves at Cumberland County College were busy! Phi Theta Kappa from the college collected books for Santa to give to our Littles at Christmas. The gift of reading-- what a beautiful gift!

More than 100 children found something special under the Christmas Tree this year thanks to the OLMA students who adopted a child through the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. Coats were also collected for children who need them. Pictured are some of the senior organizers.

As well as a Big thank You to Larry's II, Fitness Connection of Vineland, Our Lady of Mercy Academy, Wheaton Industries, Volkswagen of Salem, Groupe SEB, & Vineland Public Library

We offer a "Big" thank-you to those who supported our families for the Holidays this past year! Generous sponsors provided delicious Thanksgiving feasts to families in our mentoring programs. Sponsors include Redeemer Lutheran Church in Vineland, Triad Associates , Memorial Presbyterian Church in Vineland, Mt Pisgah Methodist Church in Vineland, and anonymous donors from our community.
