(FAIRFAX)—George Mason University’s Center for the Arts released today its schedule of events for January and February 2018 as part of the Great Performances at Mason series. The calendar includes Irish step-dancers, jazz extraordinaires, comedic ballet, renowned orchestral works, opera productions, and modern dance presentations. Additionally, Mason alum, students, and faculty are featured in theater productions and classical and jazz music concerts. The Center’s winter offerings begin on January 27 with Stepping Out by Dublin Irish Dance, an exploration of the Celtic experience through the fast footwork of Irish step-dancers and an eight-member traditional Irish band. Serving up iconic rock ‘n’ roll songs and classic jazz tunes, The Birdland All-Stars join famed drummer Tommy Igoe for a high-energy performance on January 28. Les Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo will amaze audiences on February 2 with their masculine muscles, flawless en pointe technique, and fabulous tutus—proving that guys can be ballerinas too! On February 9, Sweden’s Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra will offer a stirring concert of works by Smetana, Rachmaninoff, and Tchaikovsky, and featuring world- renowned Armenian pianist Nareh Arghamanyan. TAO presents Drum Heart on February 10, showcasing an ancient form of Japanese drumming with stunning costumes and choreography. Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream meets the genius of Britten’s lush musical score in a new production by Virginia Opera presented on February 17 and February 18. Lastly, RIOULT
