THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD TODAY’S FOCUS: MANY EPIPHANIES

An epiphany is a moment of revelation, a moment that can occur when something long expected finally happens, or when something completely unexpected breaks into our lives. Epiphany celebrates the appearance of a star that led the three foreign magi to the nativity. An epiphany can also be a sudden, intuitive perception or insight into the meaning of something. We have had epiphanies through common experi-ences like talking with someone, engaging in everyday tasks and enjoying nature’s beauty. Epiphanies comes in many forms. The feast of the Epiphany asks us to open our eyes to see God’s presence where we might least expect.

Isaiah 60: 1-6 Psalm 72: 11

Ephesians 3: 2-3a, 5-6 Matthew 2: 1-12

We prayed, “Lord, every nation on earth will adore you,” yet we can resist your presence in those whom we fear or mis-understand. Open our eyes to see you wherever and in whom-ever you make yourself known so that we can do you homage by offering the gifts of our acceptance and belief.

FEAST OF THE EPIPHANY

The Feast of the Epiphany of Our Lord Jesus Christ is one of the oldest Christian feasts, though, throughout the centuries, it has celebrated a variety of things. Epiphany comes from a Greek verb meaning “to re-veal” and all of the various events celebrated by the Feast of the Epiphany are revelations of Christ to man. A FOURFOLD FEAST Epiphany originally celebrated four different events, in the following order of importance; The NAPTISM OF THE LORD; Christ first miracle, the changing of water into wine at the wedding in Cana; the NATIVITY OF CHRIST; and the visitation of the WISE MEN or Ma-gi. Each of these is a revelation of God to man; At Christ Baptism, the Holy Spirit descends and the voice of GOD THE FATHER is heard, declaring that Jesus is His Son; at the wedding in Cana, the miracle reveals Christ’s divinity; at the Nativity, the angels bear witness to Christ, and the stepherds, representing the people of Israel, bow down before Him; and at the visitation of the Magi, Christ’s divinity is revealed to the Gentiles-the other nations of the earth. Prayers for the Feast of the Epiphany: “O God, Who by the guidance of a star didst this day reveal Thine only-begotten Son to the Gentiles, mercifully grant that we, who know Thee now by faith, may be so led as to behold with our eyes the beauty of Thy majesty. Through the same Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. Amen.

Then remember St. Anthony Church with a residual gift that defines your Legacy of Faith as a member of our parish community. Please call 330-744-8451, ext 325 for information.

HELP NEEDED As we are entering a New Year and schedules of Church events are coming into the office to reserve dates on our cal-endar. Our Spring and Fall Spaghetti Dinner is on hold with-out A person to volunteer to head this committee. Usually I start mailing letters out for donations of Golden Patrons and Place Mat ads. There are very generous businesses who help make this dinner a success and we all know the Church can use the extra money for much needed repairs that continually pop up. So I’m willing to work hard to get the beginning work started and collect and make baskets for the Chinese Auction. Can we count on your help too? June
