WE CENTER OURSELVES ON GOD

Welcome to a time of Sabbath, rest, and renewal

\January 5, 2020

Glade Matters

Shared moments of information and inspiration about our church family

Prelude “The First Newell” Jim Brickman

*Processional Hymn “We Three Kings” Insert

*Call to Worship (John 1)

L: In the beginning, there was the Word;

P: the Word was in God’s presence, and the Word was God. L: The Word was present to God from the beginning. Through the Word all things

came into being...

P: In the Word was life, and that life was humanity’s light- - L: And the Word became flesh and stayed for a little while among us;

P: we saw the Word’s glory— L: the favor and position a parent gives an only child—

P: filled with grace, filled with truth. L: Let us rejoice in the Word!

ALL: Let us rejoice! Amen!

Opening Prayer (Offered by all)

O Word made flesh, you have come into our midst as light and wisdom, desiring to

be known to us in our lives and to be found in the world around us. Open our eyes

and our ears and our hearts to recognize you where you dwell—in our midst—

Challenging, heartening, lighting the way to truth, peace, and justice. Amen.

Time With The Children

Scripture Readings: Jeramiah 31:7-14, Ephesians 1:3-14; John 1:10-18

L: The Word of God, for the people of God.

P: Thanks be to God!

Sermon “You Don’t Know This Man” Rev. Guy S. Johnson

*Hymn “What Child Is This?” #148

Sharing our Joys and Concerns

Pastor: The Lord be with you.

People: And also with you.

Pastor: Let us pray…

WE GIVE OURSELVES TO GOD’S WILL AND CARE

Invitation to Joyful Giving (Responsive Reading)

L: The Love of God is born new in the world as often as we embody that love in the

works of compassion, peace and justice. Let us offer our gifts in a spirit of generosity

and hope.

P: With these gifts, dear God, accept the praise and thanksgiving of our hearts,

which rejoice in your goodness and love. Let our gifts point to your presence in the

world, and further your dream for the world through Jesus, Emmanuel, God-with-

us. Amen.

Offertory “What Child Is This?” Paul Manz

Doxology

Service of Communion Prayer of Confession: When we close our eyes to the Light of the World, struggling to shine light on the lives

of all who are poor and oppressed: Lord, have mercy.

When we close our ears to the Wisdom of God, struggling to be heard above hate-filled

words and fear-filled rhetoric: Christ, have mercy.

When we close our hearts to the Glory of God, which is known fully only in a world of

peace where all creation thrives, Lord, have mercy.

Assurance of Pardon

Great Thanksgiving:

L: The Lord be with you.

A: And also with you.

L: Lift up your hearts

A: We lift them up to the Lord.

L: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

A: It is right to give our thanks and praise.

It is right… and all the company of heaven as we praise your name and join un their

unending hymn:

Sanctus “Holy, Holy, Holy” #793

Holy are you…as we proclaim the mystery of our faith:

Christ has died, Christ is risen, Christ will come again.

Pour out your Holy Spirit…all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and

forever. Amen.

And now, we pray the prayer that our Savior taught his disciples, saying:

Please enjoy the adornment of poinsettias throughout the

sanctuary that are provided by members in remembrance and

honor of their loved ones. A Poinsettia Garden Program is

provided that lists our loved ones and the family members

honoring them.

There will be a congregational meeting next Sunday, January 12, 2019 to elect new

consistory members. Following worship that day, we will install the new members

and then vote on the proposed by-law change which states. The Consistory will

consist of (7) elected members, referred to as Deacons. In addition, a youth

representative may be appointed to attend Consistory meetings.

The Second Mile Giving for January

Second Mile Giving for January & February supports

Church World Service’s Blanket Program. Every $10 you

give provides a wool or cotton blanket distributed by CWS

to needy people around the world. Last year,

congregational gifts provided over 118,000 CWS Bankets

and Kits to families impacted by hurricanes, tornadoes,

flooding and other crises (including homelessness and

poverty). Share your blessings and increase the outreach

this year! Please indicate on the memo line of the check

the bulletin board. Please consider signing up to provide the flowers

that coincides with their birthday or another special day. You may wish

to “Glade UCC” and on the memo line, write “Altar Flower Fund.”

Our deepest condolences to Tim & Jan Dinterman on the passing of Tim’s
