Dear Friends, Welcome to the New Year of grace, 2015. As you read on the Bulletin cover last weekend, this past year has been filled with gains and losses, which is the result of every passage of time. The Parish knows many cycles: Liturgical year, school year, civil year, financial year. All have their own character and movement. Our principle calendar centers in the Paschal Mystery, the dying and rising of Jesus Christ, which animates all the other feasts of the church year. It is within this Church year that we encounter the Word of Scripture, often while at the table of the Eucharist which nourishes our Catholic Christian life each day of the year. It is a blessing for us to know we have access to this Mystery of Faith, leading us to look forward in hope for eternal life. January is a busy month with several major points of activity. Catholic Schools Week is the week of January 26-30. Our Elementary School has been a blessing to us for over 35 years. It is recognized for its academic rigor and for being a community of Catholic faith. Many families from the parish have entrusted their children to this ministry. I encourage parents to give our School a closer look and consider placing their children at SJV School for a strong foundation. Also this month we will consider and commit to the annual Financial Stewardship. I mentioned one of the calendars we follow is the fiscal calendar, which includes setting our budget for the parish. Being able to maintain or grow our parish ministry and presence depends on many things, including finances. I hope you will also consider this an investment in God’s work which is worth the effort. Have a blessed beginning to this New Year. Love,

ST JEAN VIANNEY CAPITAL CAMPAIGN “Our Time to Pray, Our Time to Give”

A MATCHING GIFT There are parishioners who work for businesses which will sometimes MATCH a charitable donation to a Church or School. Is your employer one of those people? If so, your gift to the Capital Campaign could be matched. Sometimes, the employer will match a gift to a SCHOOL but not a CHURCH. Regardless of the case, we can help you find out if your employer will match your gift. Talk to Fr. Tom or Debbie Curole at the parish office, 753.7950 so we can help you help us.

We Plan Our Giving Planning is an important part of virtually every significant endeavor in life, and that is certainly true of our finances. Before we spend, we often weigh our options. We save. In short,

we plan. In the same way, we invite you to prayerfully consider your commitment to this important stewardship effort—in advance. Prayerfully, we serve with generous hearts. Each work of faith invites wise planning, and giving to address the needs of this parish is a work of faith.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION Epiphany celebrates the wake-up calls of life, the showings of God’s majesty and power in the person of Jesus. The feast alerts us to look for signs of the Lord’s grace and action in our lives today. In this context, the call of the Second Vatican Council to reform the sacramental life of the Church, including our pattern of care for the sick, is indeed a holy awakening. Prior to the 1960s, our care for the sick had collapsed in the popular imagination into something everyone called “last rites.” An immensely complicated ritual, with anointing accompanied by quickly muttered Latin prayers, was enacted for a marginally conscious person at “death’s door.” By the time a priest was called, the sick person might not be able to receive viaticum, or derive much personal benefit from the ritual. The healing effects of the sacrament, investing suffering with the dignity of a link to Christ’s cross, and the immense assurance of forgiveness for a person reviewing the life journey, were hidden. Suddenly, an epiphany swept through the Church, and the way we care for the sick was utterly transformed. It took several cen-turies, however, for the Church to reach that mo-ment of renewal. —Rev.
