41 Every year his parents traveled to Jerusalem for the Passover Festival.

42 When he was twelve years old, they went up according to the custom of the festival.

43 After those days were over, as they were returning, the boy Jesus stayed behind

in Jerusalem, but his parents did not know it.

44 Assuming he was in the traveling party, they went a day’s journey. Then they began looking

for him among their relatives and friends.

45 When they did not find him, they returned to Jerusalem to search for him.

46 After three days, they found him in the temple sitting among the teachers, listening to them

and asking them questions.

47 And all those who heard him were astounded at his understanding and his answers.

48 When his parents saw him, they were astonished, and his mother said to him, “Son,

why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you.”

49 “Why were you searching for me?” he asked them. “Didn’t you know that it was necessary

for me to be in my Father’s house?”

50 But they did not understand

what he said to them.

51 Then he went down with them

and came to Nazareth and was

obedient to them. His mother

kept all these things in her

heart.

52 And Jesus increased in wisdom

and stature, and in favor with

God and with people.

New Year, New Ways “Consider your ways.” Haggai 1:5

Making New Year’s resolutions and not keeping them is a universal experience. We may be sincere when we make them, but then we find them too hard to keep, or perhaps we forget all about them. Let me give you two reasons why it can be good to make resolutions at the beginning of a new year. First, it forces us to look at ourselves—to be honest about our failures and our need to change. Many New Year’s resolutions are unrealistic or only wishful thinking, but the exercise of examining ourselves—with God’s help—and seeing where we fall short is important. Second, making a list of resolutions can turn us to God. If we are honest, we know we fall far short of being what we ought to be—and because of that, we need God’s forgiveness. We’ll also realize that we can’t live the way we should in our own strength. We need God’s help. Begin this year by making resolutions—especially the resolution to open your heart and life to Jesus Christ more than you ever have before.

How we guard our money is also revealing. The man James had in mind “hoarded” his wealth (James 5:3). “Hoarded” is a translation of a Greek word from which we get our word “thesaurus.” It means “a collection” and has the connotation of gathering all we can and storing it up. There is nothing wrong with a savings account. In fact, the Bible puts its stamp of approval on fiscal responsibility. See II Corinthians 12:14 for an example. However, it is wrong to hoard wealth that is owed to others. James said that guarding such wealth is deceitful, decadent, and deceptive.

Guarded wealth promises joy, but only brings misery. When we begin to love money it ceases to bless us and begins to curse us. We think that just a little more money will make us happy, but that is a deception.

The parable of the rich fool illustrates the deceitfulness of guarded wealth. Jesus said, “So is he who lays up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God” (Luke 12:21). The man in the parable accumulated wealth “for himself” with utter disregard for anything or anyone else. So God said, “Fool! This night your soul will be required of you; then whose will those things be which you have provided?” (Luke 12:20). We sometimes think a new suit, a new car, or a new home will make us happy. But these things never really satisfy. They are all deceitful. It is good to have things money can buy, but it is better to have things money cannot buy. From Money Talks by O.S. Hawkins

To experience a great year, just do what Jesus said, “Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness;

and all these things shall be added to you” (Matthew 6:33).

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO SEEK HIM FIRST?

1. It means that you spend time with Him at the first of each day, praying and reading His Word, asking Him for

direction, guidance, help and insight ... confessing your sins when you blow it, and seeking His grace to help in your

time of need.

2. It means you put His agenda above your agenda. You pray, “Not my will, but Thine be done” (Luke 22:42).

You live your life to please Jesus, not to please yourself.

3. It means you obey Him and do what He says in the power He supplies. You don't let your fleshly desires control

you; you let Jesus control you.

4. It means you invest your time, talent and resources in the kingdom of God, not the kingdom of self.

5. It means you recognize that He is everything, and in Christ “are hidden all treasures of wisdom and

knowledge” (Colossians 2:3). The true treasures of life—love, joy, peace, fulfillment, true success—are only found
