RESPECT LIFE MINISTRY OUR WEEKLY PRAYER FOR LIFE For all homeless parents: that God will teach us how to love and support them; We pray to the Lord!

SPOTLIGHT ON THE JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY

The Spiritual Works of Mercy have long been a part of the Christian tradition, appearing in the works of theologians and spiritual writers throughout histo-ry. Just as Jesus attended to the spiritu-al well-being of those he ministered to, these Spiritual Works of Mercy guide us to "help our neighbor in their spiritual needs" The seven Spiritual Works of Mercy are listed below. For each of the next seven weeks, we’ll highlight one work of mercy, along with sugges-tions and words of advice for living them out in our daily lives.

1) Counsel the doubtful 2) Instruct the ignorant 3) Admonish the sinner 4) Comfort the sorrowful & afflict-

ed 5) Forgive offenses willingly 6) Pray for the living and the dead 7) Bear wrongs patiently

Do not be bitter about wrongs done against you. Place your hope in God so that you can endure the troubles of this world and face them with a com-passionate spirit. Frustrated with someone? Step away from the situation, take a few deep breaths, pray the Our Father, asking God for patience.

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity The annual Week of Prayer for Christian Uni-ty ends tomorrow. Sponsored by the World Council of Churches and the Catholic Church's Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, the annual Week of Prayer for Christian Unity has been observed since 1908, beginning on the Feast of St. Peter (January 18th) and ends on the Feast of St. Paul (January 25th). The theme for the 2016 observance, “Called to Proclaim the Mighty Acts of the Lord” (cf. 1 Peter 2:9-10), was inspired by two verses from the First Letter of St. Peter. The theme reflects the calling shared by all the baptized to proclaim the mighty acts of the Lord. The Week of Prayer for Christian Unity gives Christians an annual opportunity to continue their quest for the unity they already share in Christ. During this coming week, we are called to join millions of Christians world-wide in prayer for the visible unity of Christ’s church. For more information and links to prayer and worship resources, you can go to the Archdiocese of Chicago’s web site at www.archchicago.org/departments/ecumenical/WeekOfPrayer2016.html.

Hearts Connected for Community Love is the beauty of the Soul

(St. Augustine)

I often tell people that perhaps my favorite author on

stewardship is usually not thought of as a stewardship

writer at all: Catherine Doherty. She was like a Russian-

Canadian Dorothy Day, starting the Madonna House

Apostolate of lay men and women and clergy who work

with and live with the poor. Doherty wrote about a spiritual

life where God permeates our everyday lives. Of course,

this resonates with me and my writing about everyday

stewardship spirituality.

She wrote, "Yes, stewardship pertains to everything, and I

am responsible for my part of that everything." This sense

of responsibility for our own little slice of God's universe

is so very important in an imperfect reality of human life.

The consequence of not taking care of our little "part of

that everything" is that those who could have heard or

witnessed the good news of Jesus Christ might not get that

chance. We are created so uniquely, it is folly to always

assume that someone else can take care of things if we

EVERYDAY STEWARDSHIP

choose to bow out. We sometimes even fall into a trap where we

say, "It is God who touches people's hearts, not me," because it

may very well be that God's plan was to touch them through

YOU.

There are many implications of Paul's use of body imagery in his

First Letter to the Corinthians. Yes, the body of Christ has many

parts and they are all unique. All of us baptized into his body

have been called to be an active part in that body. But if we

choose to neglect our role or we don't feel responsible to be the

best member of that body we can be, the body cannot function as

it needs to. Good stewardship spirituality sees all the gifts in that

body as precious. For our important role, we are called to grow

and cultivate our part of that body.

STEWARDSHIP GIVING

Please Make Your Gift to the 2016 Annual Catholic Appeal

“The Hands of God’s Mercy”

Many of you have responded to the Annual Catholic Appeal mailing from Archbishop Cupich. On behalf of those served by the minis-tries and services funded by the ACA, we thank you for your gifts. If you received the mailing and have not responded, please do so as soon as possible. In this Jubilee Year of Mercy, Pope Francis asks us to understand God’s mercy in our own lives and then to be the hand of mercy for others. The ACA offers a wonderful opportunity to ex-tend God’s mercy to many others. In addition to providing for ministries and ser-vices throughout the Archdiocese, the Appeal also funds services that are of great help to min-istries here in our parish. For example, Appeal funds supports our school, religious education, ministerial formation and initiatives for life, peace and justice.

As we contemplate God’s many gifts to us, we should also reflect on our gratitude for these gifts. Your financial support for the work of our parish, our Archdiocese and the Church throughout the world is, in fact, one way to ex-press this gratitude. Please give generously to the 2016 Annual Catholic Appeal. When our parish reaches its goal of $67,710 in paid pledges, 100% of the additional funds re-ceived will be returned to us for use in our parish.
