“Lord, will only a few people be saved?”“Lord, will only a few people be saved?”“Lord, will only a few people be saved?”“Lord, will only a few people be saved?” This Sunday’s Gospel gives us the opportunity to think about things which are important to eternal life. The world is upside down. Things are moving away from the vision of God and his creative plan. Man seems to think that he can do better than God. So man goes on redefining everything God has put in motion in this world of ours. It is sad, but people do not under-stand what is really going on. I am not only speaking about people in general, but I am speaking also about Catholics and other Christians. Some of them are Church going people. This is what makes everything hard to understand. It is as if we have forgotten our life’s destiny. We have forgotten to whom we belong. We have forgotten that we are people who are on journey. The Gospel opens up with a story which is narrated by Luke the Evangelist. It says someone from the crowd asked Jesus, “Lord, will only a few people be saved?” If you look at the next line in the Gospel, our Lord is not responding directly to the question. He is inviting the crowd to think a bit about the ques-tion which was put to him. When you read the bible, you come across this pattern of conversation. He always gives time for the people to reflect on what matters to life. He invites us not just live for this life, live for life eternal. Jesus invites us to store up treasures which are not stolen. He invites us also to be rich in what matters to God. Let us turn to the response which Jesus gave to the one, who asked, “Lord, will only few people be saved?” This is how Lord Jesus answered, “Strive to enter through the narrow gate.” This response is to invite us to think about our willingness and atti-tude about our faith lives. Are we willing to take up our crosses and follow Jesus? Are we going to give up our faith when life’s burdens become harder? Our Lord taught us that, “Unless you take up your cross daily and follow me, you cannot be my disci-ples.” A Christian cannot avoid crosses in life. There is no life without a cross. If we are looking for a life without a cross, we are living in a fantasy world. This will reflect on the next state-ment our Lord makes. This is what our Lord Jesus said to the person, who asked, “Lord, will only a few people be saved?” The Lord responded, “Strive to enter through the narrow gate.” Then immediately he adds, “For many, I tell you, will attempt to enter, but will not be strong enough.” This is what the Lord says that people will try, but they have no strength to persevere. What does this mean? This means that when earthly problems come our way, we for-get to listen to Jesus, but we are happy to listen to the world. But we still think that we are the disciples of Jesus. We have a right to eternal life. Let us look at the closing part of the Gospel. The author Luke concludes the Gospel with this statement. It reads, “After the master of the house has arisen and locked the door, then will you stand outside knocking and saying, ‘Lord, open the door for us.’ He will say in reply, ‘I do not know where you are from.’ “And you will say, we ate and drank in your company and you taught in our streets. Then he will say to you, I do not know where you are from. Depart from me, all you evil doers!” The last and closing part of the Gospel is very sad. It means that people, who started well with a new life with God, just gave it all up for something worldly. Material things preoccupied their lives, they just forgot they belong to God and heaven; instead they are very much happy with this world’s offering. It does not need to be that way. God has already shown us the way. We need to look again for the way, which Jesus shown to us, this is what Jesus said to us over and over again, “Set your hearts on higher things.” May God’s richness of love surround us! Fr. JohnFr.
