ASSISI PARDON PORZIUNCULA PARDON is always available under the conditions the Catholic Church has stipulated.

The conditions for receiving the Porziuncula Pardon are: To receive the Porziuncula Indulgence, one must receive sacramental absolution and receive Holy Communion at Mass. Additionally, one must visit a church where one prays at least the Creed and an Our Father for the intentions of the Pope. Additionally, one must be completely free of any attachment to sin; if this condition is not met, the indulgence is partial rather then plenary. At the National Shrine of St. Francis of Assisi, the Pardon of Assisi may be received on October 4th, the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi (in the Shrine Church); on any two days of one’s own choosing during the year (one day in the Church and one day in the Porziuncula Nuova); and as often as one makes a formal pilgrimage as part of a group to the Shrine Church or to the Porziuncula Nuova. (One may receive a plenary indulgence only once a day and it may be applied to oneself or to the soul of one of the faithfully departed.)

Reflections on the Wisdom from St. Francis

by Fr. Bobby

“I beg you not to forget the Lord because of this world’s cares and preoccupations and not to turn away from His commandments.” Letter to the Rulers of the Peoples. One of the greatest gifts we have as human beings is the gift of memory. It is one of the faculties of the soul that St. Augustine said reflects the image of God within us. Yet, as St. Francis knew very well, it is very easy to forget even the most important things. He knew how important the daily reminders of God’s presence are, to keep us from forgetting we are children of God. Daily prayer, particularly the Divine Office, helped keep Francis focused on what was essential to his life: the reality of God and God’s call to him. The Eucharist was of such great importance to the Poverello because at mass we consciously follow Jesus’ command: “Do this in memory of me.” Along with these, for Francis the concrete reminders of God’s presence, churches, were essential aids to human memory. They say that even seeing two sticks on the ground in the form of the cross would move Francis to prayer and thanksgiving. May he help us all to remember God in our daily lives, and not become forgetful of God’s goodness and beauty.

MASS FOR WORLD DAY OF THE SICK Saturday, February 10, 11:00 am

St. Mary’s Cathedral, 1111 Gough Street, San Francisco Kenneth Ryan, KM 415-613-0395 [email protected]

William Cardinal Levada is principal celebrant at a special 11:00 am Mass for World Day of the Sick on February 10, at which the Anointing of the Sick will take place. All are invited. The event is sponsored by the Order of Malta, which will arrange rides for people who need them. The Order of Malta says: “Bring a friend who is sick and experience a ‘special time of prayer and sharing, of offering one’s suffering for the good of the Church and of reminding everyone to see in his sick brother or sister the face of Christ’….” The theme for this year’s Day of the Sick is provided by the words that Jesus spoke from the Cross to Mary, his Mother, and to John: “Woman, behold your son… Son, behold your mother. And from that hour the disciple took her into his home” (John 19:26-27). For information or assistance, please contact Kenneth Ryan, KM, above.
