Greater Mission Bend Area Council (GMBAC) Want to know more about GMBAC? Check out their website at www.gmbac.com

The annual Greater Mission Bend Plant Swap typically held in May is on hold until the GMBAC has more information from public health authorities. The GMBAC will keep you posted.

PLEASE RECYCLEDo not throw beer cans, soda cans, glass bottles, milk containers out with your Trash. Use the small rectangular blue container for these items. You pay for this service as part of your Tuesday trash pick-up!

Vehicle Violations: • Do Not store commercial vehicles or vehicles purposed for commercial use, mobile homes, recreational vehicles, boats, trailers, etc. in your driveway. These vehicle should be properly stored

• Do Not cover vehicles with a cloth cover in the driveway. This is not allowed.

• Vehicles with expired tags, flat tires, on jacks or blocks whether parked in your driveway or on the street is not acceptable and is a deed restriction violation. Vehicles will be ticketed or towed by Harris or Fort Bend County at owner’s expense.

Operating a business out of your home is a deed restriction violation. Doing so detracts from the neighborhood, degrades home values, and causes undue frustrations for neighbors. The HOA board will take

necessary measures and legal action to prohibit homeowners from operating a business at their home. Examples include, but not limited to child care, hospice care, performing car repairs at your home, selling cars from your home, storing commercial vehicles for use, storing hazardous materials or building materials, etc. Advertising your commercial business as your residential address is also a violation.

CARES Act The CARES Act or the Economic Impact Payments are being distributed as a direct result of the COVID-19 and its impact on the economy. The initial stimulus was distributed in April to all qualifying persons and the second stimulus is to be distributed before the end of year. One thing to note about the second wave is that it is one-half of the initial payouts.

Did you know? The CARES Act stimulus payments are not considered  taxable  income.    Therefore,  you will not have to pay back any portion of the money. In fact the payments are actually a type of tax credit. According to the IRS website, there is no provision in the law requiring repay-ment of a payment even if for the 2020 tax year, there is no qualifying child or your adjusted gross income is greater than the required thresholds. The reason is the stimulus payments were based on information from either 2019 or 2018 tax year.

The CARES Act stimulus payments could impact your tax re-fund. If your 2020 taxable income is less than that calculated for the stimulus payments, you could claim the credit when you file your 2020 taxes. In this case, this could increase your refund.

If you did not receive CARES Act stimulus payment in round one or two, but you meet all requirements you can claim the tax credit on your 2020 tax return form 1040.

To combat and reduce the transference of COVID-19, Mayor Sylvestor Turner instituted a $250 fine for those not wearing a mask. This aligns with the state’s mandatory mask order. Be a team player. Protect yourselves, your family, and the community. Mask Up!

Calling All Volunteers! How to Help and Give Back Are you looking for something to keep you busy, give back, support your community? There are many ways to make a difference, but look no further than our local Mission Bells Food Pantry. The Mission Bells Food Pantry is located at 15325 Bellaire Blvd, operating from within Christ the King Episcopal Church. The food pantry has operated in Mission Bend since 1982.

Other ideas to start in your community is to start with those vulnerable persons you may already know, perhaps a neighbor or a friend’s neighbor or someone who may suffer from anxiety or depression, elderly, house bound, or disabled. One of the easiest things you can do is to make a call, send a text, email, or video chat. Inquire about their well being. Ask whether you can pickup grocery, a prescription, run an errand, or even help with the yard. There are many options. Make a donation. I know many in the community are impacted, but those who can give, donate to the Houston Food Bank, Red Cross, Harris County Rental Assistance Program, Meals on Wheels, or any organization that is dear to you. Non-financial donations can include clothing, computers, masks, toiletries, cleaning supplies – some of those hard to find items. Provide Mental Health Support by volunteering with the Crisis Text Line to respond to people in crisis.

There is plenty you can do so share your time! We will all benefit.

If you choose to volunteer in person remember to keep yourselves and your family safe. Wash your hands; Wear a Mask; Social Distance

History of New Year Resolutions The ancient Babylonians are said to have been the first people to make New Year’s resolutions, some 4,000 years ago. They were also the first to hold recorded celebrations in honor of the new year - though for them the year began not in January but in mid-March, when the crops were planted. During a massive 12-day religious festival known as Akitu, the Babylonians crowned a new king or reaffirmed their loyalty to the reigning king. They also made promises to the gods to pay their debts and return any objects they had borrowed. These promises could be considered the forerunners of our New Year’s resolutions. If the Babylonians kept to their word, their (pagan) gods would bestow favor on them for the coming year. If not, they would fall out of the gods’ favor - a place no one wanted to be.

A similar practice occurred in ancient Rome, after the reform- ‐minded emperor Julius Caesar tinkered with the calendar and established January 1 as the spirit inhabited doorways and arches, January had special significance for the Romans. Believing that Janus symbolically looked backwards into the previous year and ahead into the future, the Romans offered sacrifices to the deity and made promises of good conduct for the coming year.

Directions 1. To make the cilantro dipping sauce, combine cilantro, sour cream, jalapeno, mayonnaise, garlic and lime juice in the bowl of a food processor; season with salt and pepper to taste. Set aside. 2. Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet or Dutch oven over medium high heat. 3. In a medium bowl, gently mash avocados using a potato masher. Add tomato, red onion, cilantro, lime juice, salt and pepper, to taste, and gently toss to combine. 4. Working one at a time, place avocado mixture in the center of each wrapper. Bring the bottom edge of the wrapper tightly over the filling, folding in the sides. Continue rolling until the top of the wrapper is reached. Using your finger, rub the edges of the wrapper with water, pressing to seal. Repeat with remaining wrappers and avocado mixture. 5. Working in batches, add egg rolls to the Dutch oven and fry until evenly golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes. Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate. 6.
