College Board Places North Allegheny on 7th Annual AP® District Honor Roll

We are proud to announce that North Allegheny School District has been honored by the College Board with placement on the 7th Annual AP® District Honor Roll. Only 433 school districts across the United States and Canada have been recognized with this year’s honor.

Inclusion on the honor roll is based on the examination of AP data from 2014-2016, during which North Allegheny had to increase the number of students participating in AP courses while also increasing or maintaining the percentage of students earning AP exam scores of 3 or higher.

“North Allegheny is proud to have earned placement on the College Board’s 7th

Annual AP® District Honor Roll in recognition of our outstanding AP program,” Superintendent Dr. Robert Scherrer said. “We’re committed to continuing our efforts to offer a broad array of AP courses and support the academic success of all students.”

“Congratulations to all the teachers and administrators in this district who have worked so tirelessly to both expand access to AP and also to help students succeed on the AP Exams,” said Trevor Packer, the College Board’s head of AP and Instruction. “These teachers and administrators are delivering real opportunity in their schools and classrooms, and students are rising to the challenge.”

Tracie Michalowski Appointed IES

Principal

The Board of School Directors has appointed Mrs. Tracie Michalowski to the position of Ingomar Elementary School Principal effective March 2017.

For the past nine years, Mrs. Michalowski has served as the Assistant Principal at Marshall Middle School, where she has proved herself to be hard-working, organized, caring, and collaborative. During her time at NA, she has served on numerous committees, planned professional development for teachers, and built positive relationships with students, staff, parents, and colleagues.

The District is delighted to offer this leadership opportunity to Mrs. Michalowski and is con-fident that she will excel as a leader at Ingomar Elementary School.

Students and Staff Honored at DAA CeremonyBefore the Board meeting on January 25, the North Allegheny Board of School Directors presented 48 students and staff members with Distinguished Achievement Awards (DAA) in recognition of their state and national level accomplishments. Congratulations to each individual who was honored at this ceremony!

Intermediate High School Plans for Summer RenovationsOn January 25, the North Allegheny Board of School Directors approved several bid awards for renovation projects that will be completed this summer at North Allegheny Intermediate High School.

The funds for this $6.78 million renovation project were set aside during a recent bond issue. All renovations are expected to be completed during summer break so the building is ready for students on the first day of the 2017-2018 school year.

As a building that was last renovated in 1997, NAI will be seeing a number of interior and exterior improvements, including:

• Expansion of the Robotics Lab• Improved functionality of the Chemistry Lab’s teacher station and prep space• A new four-concept serving line and support equipment in the Cafeteria• Student restroom renovations• HVAC and roofing improvements• Replacement of concrete sidewalks and curbs

MMS Student Among Top Ten in

Young Scientist Challenge

Marshall Middle School student Meghna Behari was named a Top Ten Finalist in the national Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge for her passion for science and spirit of innovation and ingenuity.

Each year, thousands of students in grades 5-8 participate in the challenge by creating a video describing a new, innovative solution that could solve an everyday problem.

Meghna created a remote-controlled robot that uses sensors to test for six water-safety features and transmits the data back to land. The device tests for pH, conductivity, total dissolved solids, oxidation reduction potential, gravity, and salinity.

IMS Students Take Top Prize at Robotics ChampionshipIngomar Middle School students Felipe Bergerman and Owen Prem, along with their team, Animatronics, won the Champion’s Award at the Western PA First Lego League robotics championship earlier this month.

The team’s careful, well-planned programming and strategy led them to achieve the highest score in the regional competition, earning them a “golden ticket” to the First Lego League World Festival in St. Louis this April, where they will compete against other champions from 76 countries.

Congratulations to Felipe and Owen, and best of luck at the World Festival!

NASH Team Advances to Top 32 in International Debate CompetitionCongratulations to the NASH Speech and Debate students, who have advanced to the Top 32 round of the International Public Policy Forum (IPPF).

Sponsored by the Brewer Foundation and New York University, the IPPF is the first and only debate competition that gives high school students around the world the opportunity to engage in written and oral debates on issues of public policy.

This year, hundreds of teams submitted qualifying round essays affirming or negating the 2016-17 IPPF topic, “Resolved: The obligation to provide safe haven for refugees should outweigh a government’s right to control its borders.” Those essays were reviewed by a committee, which determined the “Round of 64” teams. In November, these teams began a single-elimination, written debate competition in which they volleyed papers back and forth with another team via email.

The Top 32 round began this month, with NASH competing in a written debate against a high school in Texas. The top 32 teams include 26 U.S. schools and six international schools.

Student Plays in Army All-American

Game

Congratulations to Josh Lugg, a NASH senior and lineman for the NA football team, who played in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on January 6. Josh was one of 100 high school football players from across the nation who had the opportunity to play in this premier game.

45 NA Students Receive Scholastic Gold Key AwardsThe annual Scholastic Art & Writing Contest recently awarded 45 NA students with Gold Key awards – the highest honor possible in the Regional competition. Students submitted works of art and writing to their local affiliates, which are evaluated by a panel of jurors comprised of artists, authors, educators, and other arts professionals. These Gold Key Award winners will now have their work judged for the national level of the competition.

G.O.L.D.

February 24 at NAI

Girls Only Leadership Development (G.O.L.D.) is an annual event at North Allegheny that is offered exclusively to eighth grade girls in all three middle schools. G.O.L.D is designed to help girls gain a positive self-image, make healthy and positive life choices, build self-confidence, and make new friends. This program also eases the transition into high school, because all of the attendees begin to form relationships with girls from the other middle schools.

Student Work Published in Creative Writing AnthologyCongratulations to NASH students Julia Maruca, Anushka Shah, and Mehrnaz Tiv, who recently had their writing published in the 2016 Ralph Munn Creative Writing Anthology.

This annual publication represents the work of Allegheny County high school students and is published by Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh. The student’s work was selected from over 200 submissions and was judged by a committee of creative writing professors, theater educators, published authors and library staff.

NA Foundation Grants Support KEVA Planks at Middle Schools

Last fall, NA Foundation an-nounced $40,000 in grants to NA schools and programs, supporting the excellence in education NASD is renowned for.

Three of those grants went to Carson, Ingomar, and Marshall Middle Schools to purchase KEVA plank sets to support STEAM education and social interactions.

Research has shown that children who play with blocks tend to do better in mathematics and science. Physically handling the blocks builds a fundamental understanding of quantities, equality, geometry, and other concepts.

PES Students Engaged in Drums Alive, Thanks to NA Foundation GrantStudents at Peebles Elementary aren’t just dancing to music, they’re creating it with the Drums Alive program. Students drum out the beat to a variety of music selections as they walk and dance around their exercise ball.

Drums Alive provides students with a fun and effective way to exercise, release stress, and build self-confidence and social competence.

January 2017NAI Spring Play Opens February 16Don’t miss your chance to see North Allegheny Intermediate High School’s performance of Arsenic and Old Lace, a dark comedic play by Joseph Kesselring.

The play features the Brewster clan, where insanity runs in the family. Two sweet old aunts take it upon themselves to poison lonely old men with nothing to live for, as an act of charity. Their nephew Mortimer is trying to negotiate his way around the shenanigans of the house, while keeping it from his fiancé, Elaine. Long lost brother Jonathan, a true criminal, returns to Brooklyn with Dr. Einstein, a plastic surgeon of doubtful character. The merry mayhem continues with bugle-blowing brother Teddy, who is charged with burial duties.
