Winds of Change Foundation wishes you a Happy 2017.May it be peaceful, joyful and prosperous.

Winds of Change updateDuring the festive period, we took time to reflect on the projects that we completed in 2016 and how these have helped improve livelihoods in communities in Laisamis Constituency, Marsabit County. We would also like to take this opportunity to provide you with an update of our activities and how you too can make a difference.

Winds of Change, i.e. Lake Turkana Wind Power’s (LTWP) CSR foundation, became active in June 2015 and has since invested in a variety of community projects together with its partners, spending approximately Euro 1M to date.

The projects can be categorized into four groups: Enhancing employability (education), enhancing access to health and water, and community activities. Examples of our completed and ongoing initiatives include:

Community activities • Environmental clean-up exercise in Gatab;• Construction of a community store and a chief’s office in Illaut;• Construction of accommodation units and an office in

Loiyangalani for the Administration Police; and,• Inaugural Sarima 10km run, which brought together people of

different tribes, e.g. Turkana, Samburu, Rendille and El Molo. Though strictly speaking not a WoC activity, LTWP constructed

a 208km road from Laisamis to Sarima, which has transformed the transportation network in the area. This has significantly increased access to markets as well as to health care and educational facilities for the local population.

Winds of Change has committed to work closely with communities in Laisamis Constituency for the next 15 years to help improve their livelihoods.

These communities overwhelmingly lack basic infrastructure facilities, e.g. in relation to access to health and water, and there is a great need for vocational training and skills development. As such, we have made it an objective of ours to

support the communities where possible. In 2017 alone, we intend to drill a borehole in Lonjorin, construct a ward in Kurungu, construct two classrooms in Loiyangalani and erect a safety fence around a water rock catchment in Illaut.

The plan for LTWP, is to donate at least €500,000 of its annual revenues to the foundation once the wind farm is operational. These funds will be available in 2018, once the wind farm

begins to operate fully, and power is evacuated via the transmission line.

Consequently, we face a major challenge in that we have extremely limited funds: To date Winds of Change has had to raise over €1M to fund its initiatives. As such, your support is critical to helping the people of Laisamis Constituency gain access to basic amenities and opportunities. All forms of support are welcome, be it monetary,

technical know-how or partnership ideas. Those who are interested in undertaking or contributing to our activities should contact us for further information (see contact details below).

We trust that you will find a way to help us support the people of Laisamis Constituency and look forward to hearing from you.

Wishing you a prosperous year ahead on behalf of Winds of Change, WoC Board and teamP.S.: A map with an overview of where Winds of Change has been active is provided below.
