Pawleys Presbyterian Monthly NewsleƩer of Pawleys Island Presbyterian Church | January 2017 Message from Mark Happy New Year! Weren’t we blessed with wonderful worship and festivities and decorations and food during our Advent and Christmas celebrations this season past?! Thank you to all the leaders and planners and decorators and participants and musicians and staff who contributed to our joyous observances. And also thank you to those who gave (and continue to give) to those in need in every season of the year: your giving and love reflect the true nature of the season. Other people I want to recognize and thank include officers who are rotating off active service on our various boards in the New Year. These include Elders Lewis Bowers, Tommie Kennedy, Liz Williamson, and Millie McNeil; Deacons Cari Brown and Carolyn Wolfe; and Trustee Tom Wise. One of the first items on the congregation’s agenda this month is to ordain and install new officers. That will take place Sunday, January 8 at the 10 a.m. worship service. In December, the Session examined and approved the Mission Study Report written by our Mission Study Team, and that report has been forwarded to the Presbytery for their approval. Once approved by Presbytery, they will authorize PIPC to elect a Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC). Members of the congregation will be nominated to the PNC and the congregation will elect them to begin the process of seeking the next called pastor of this church. I am excited to preach a twelve-week sermon series on the Ten Commandments beginning January 15. In preparation for that series, I encourage you to read the first 19 chapters of Exodus to set the stage for the giving of the Ten Commandments to the children of Israel (as found in Exodus 20:1-17). The Jews emerged from Egypt on the way to the Promised Land as newly freed slaves after 400 years in bondage. In light of God’s deliverance of the Israelites from Pharaoh, the Ten Commandments helped to shape and form a gracious and vital community following God’s ways from a downtrodden and disorganized group of often-antagonistic cousins. That gracious and transforming intent of the Ten Commandments remains a promise and possibility today. You are invited to join this study in the months to come!

Being a part of the Music Program here at PIPC is fun! We are part of a support group for each other, you never have to worry about where to sit, or what you are wearing, AND you are able to be actively involved in the worship leadership, AND as we study the music and the words, we are so blessed! There are no auditions. If you have a spirit of desire and aren’t afraid to commit, we hope you will take that leap of faith and consider being a part of the Music Ministry. We hope that you were blessed and inspired by the music during the Advent and Christmas seasons. We have rung, sung, played oboe, flutes, clarinets, piano, organ, recorders, wind chimes, cymbals, accordion, sung solos, processed from the aisles, and dressed our children in costumes for the nativity Christmas Eve service! Please take a moment to thank your musicians for the many hours that they spend each and every week in rehearsal time - and they do it with JOY! Grace and Peace, Lana Dr. Lana Stephens Pollard Director of Music Ministries Pawleys Island Presbyterian Church 9967 Ocean Highway Pawleys Island, SC 29585 Cell: (904) 434-6753

Scholarship Dinner

SCHOLARSHIP DINNER, 2017

INVITING NEW PARTICIPANTS TO JOIN OUR TEAM!

The planning for PIPC’s 8th Annual Scholarship Dinner, 2017, is beginning!

The purpose of the Annual Scholarship Dinner is to raise funds to provide scholarships for PIPC’s graduating seniors, a most worthwhile cause. Our team has great fun togeth-er working on soliciting donations from local businesses, selling tickets, planning the big event, working to set up the Silent Auction, designing centerpieces and decorations, planning the menu, selecting musicians, greeting guests at the event, and providing prayers and support for our seniors and youth. Our youth, dressed in black and white, work closely with us, as they serve the dinner for the evening! Many people consider the Scholarship Dinner a ‘not to be missed, fun and lively event at PIPC!’

If you would like to participate as a Scholarship Team member, we would love to have you! The 8th Annual Scholarship Dinner will be held on Saturday, February 11, 2017. We will meet each Monday night in January and the first Monday in February, the week of the dinner. The meetings begin at 6:00 PM in Classroom C of the Holsclaw Fellowship Center, and we try to wrap up by 7:00 PM. We work hard for one month or so, and after that, in the spring, meet to make decisions about the scholarship awards. That is our work for the year. We have fun and we eat delicious hors d’ oeuvres while we meet! Come join us!

If you are interested in joining us, please call Gail Joley (843-237-9921) or Lee Brockington (843-318-6846), (Co-Chairs) or email Gail at [email protected]. Hope you will join our Scholarship Team!

The Ten Commandments

Since Pastor Mark’s sermons during winter 2017 will focus on the Ten Commandments, this topic is featured in the current Library display. For parents who would like to help their children understand the Ten Commandments:

Follow and Do: God’s Ten Commandments, by Joni Walker, uses simplified language and pictures to help children know how to live as God’s children.

A Children’s Book about Lying and A Children’s Book about Stealing are two of many books by Joy Berry which help parents explain misbehaviors to children and what to do instead. Are You My Neighbor is a VeggieTales DVD which provides a lesson in loving your neighbor.

For adults who want to explore the Ten Commandments in more depth:

The Ten Commandments: An Interpretation, by Charles L. Allen, tells us “No man can break God’s law; he breaks only himself.” It also explains that the first 4 commandments deal with man’s relationship with God and the last 6 with man’s relationship with man. “Before man can live rightly with other men, he must first get right with God.” Love, Liberation & the Law, by J. Vernon McGee, describes the Law as a mirror or searchlight which reveals our sin as well as how far apart we are from God – a gap we cannot bridge in our own strength.

Congratulations Bible Bookworm Participants and Award Recipients!

The Library Team is pleased to congratulate Addy Hapeshis, Ava Hapeshis, Ava Leach, Kennedy Leach, Elise Wahl, and Rhys Wahl who received Bible Bookworm Certificates and Awards for having read 10 books or 100 pages during the fall Bible Bookworm reading period. Remember – all readers are winners!

IT’S YOUR TURN! History-to-Our-Story Team (HOST) Update

And Thank You

Reminder: IT’S YOUR TURN to add your own personal PIPC memories to the PIPC display “Our church through the years” in Holsclaw Fellowship Center. Grab a cup of coffee before Sunday school or church or stop by before or after a church meeting or men’s breakfast and peruse key events in the life of PIPC. See the personal memories others have added. Then, using the sticky notes and markers provided, add your own input which might include:

A significant personal event in your life with PIPC. Comments on or memories about a timeline entry that resonates with you. A key PIPC event that is not currently shown.

We have a shared PIPC history together and the History-to-Our-Story Team hopes you will take this opportunity to share your special memories! Thank You! The members of the History-to-Our-Story Team wish to thank Heather Junkins whose graphic arts and display skills brought PIPC’s history to life. The team is also grateful to Bill Shehan for the use of and for painting the display panels and to Bill and Tim Pollard for setting them up. As chair of H.O.S.T., Barb Babb is very appreciative of the work done by the members of H.O.S.T. and wishes to thank Lee Brockington, Anne Floyd, Gloria Player, Andrew Warren, Jack Whetstone, and Mark Diehl (ex-officio). Barb is especially grateful that everyone involved pitched in and moved ahead with the project when she was sidelined due to her fall. Last but not least, H.O.S.T. thanks you for your review of and involvement in our shared PIPC history!
