New Year’s Resolution...?

In this space, I mostly write about my ‘65 Toyota Land Cruiser and the work I’ve done to it.

The Cruiser is done and it's a good thing. Don't get me wrong, there's always some-thing to add and I'm sure I'll find an excuse to add an accessory or two on to it.

This time last year, I made some New Year’s Resoultions for the magazine, my cruiser and for Texas Auto Guide overall. They were:

1. Finish the Cruiser: DONE!

2. Add more dealers to the magazine: Yes, but you guys want to see more...right?

3. Get more locations for the magazine: Yes, but more would be better.

So what are my Resolutions this year? I guess two of them continue again and well, I guess I have to find a new project to work on.

Over the last 7 years, I’ve had my eye on an old 60’s model Land Rover Defender, sitting in a garage in a small town around here. It looks like the sahara model, desert vehicles you’d see on Wild Kingdom. Wouldn’t that be awesome to have a Land

Cruiser and a Defender?

I set out to research the vehicle, finding all sorts of websites from parts to forums. But after visiting with some friends who have rebuilt many of them, they recommended not even mess-ing with it. They explained that parts are hard to come by and that although they look cool, you’d be better off just not even trying. Nothing like good advice from people who’ve done it already.

My wife says that she would like the next project vehicle to be an old 50’s or 60’s Chevy Pickup. I like that idea and think that might be what I’m looking for in the next couple of months.

There’s so much you can do with one of those old trucks. I’ve seen them restored to original, hot rod/rat rod, completely customized show truck and everything in between!

My ideal model would be a solid driving truck, lots of chrome, maybe bright red again, and some modern conveniences like V8 engine, A/C, power steering, great sound system and a good comfortable ride. All from a old truck.

The best part is there’s so much you can do and building it your-self is a real reward.
