About Athlete's foot

Athlete’s foot is a skin infection in thefoot caused by a fungus. The fungus thatcauses Athlete foot is called Trichophyton. When the feet, or other areas of the body, staymoist, warm and irritated, this fungus canthrive and infect the upper layer of the skin.

Athlete foot is caused by the ring-worm fungus (“tinea” in medical jargon).

Athlete foot is also called tinea pedis. Thefungus that causes Athlete foot can befound on floors and in socks and clothing. The fungus can be spread from person toperson by contact with these objects. However, without proper growing condi-tions (a warm, moist environment), thefungus will not infect the skin. Up to 70%of the population will have athletes foot atsome time during their lives.

The symptoms of Athlete foot includeitching and burning feet. The skin fre-quently peels and, in particularly severecases, there may be some cracking, pain

and bleeding as well. When the skin is injured by the fun-

gus, bacteria can also invade the skin. These bacteria can cause a bad smell.Bacterial infection of the skin and result-ing inflammation is known as cellulitis. This is especially likely to occur in the eld-erly, individuals with diabetes, chronic legswelling, or who have had veins removed(such as for heart bypass surgery), andpatients with impaired immune systems.

The treatment of Athlete foot can bedivided into two parts. The first, and mostimportant part, is to make the infected area

less suitable for the Athlete foot fungus togrow. This means keeping the area cleanand dry. Buy shoes that are leather or otherbreathable material. Shoe materials, suchas vinyl, that don’t breath cause your feetto remain moist, providing an excellentarea for the fungus to breed. Likewise, absorbent socks that wick water awayfrom your feet such as cotton socks willhelp. Powders, especially medicated pow-ders (such as with miconazole or tolnaf-

InternationallyKnown CivilRights AttorneyAlan Dershowitzto Headline Firstof “StrategicDiscussions” onWorld Issues

HOUSTON – Noted civilrights attorney Alan M.Dershowitz will present the first of20 years of free public programsfeaturing internationally knownexperts discussing "strategicallyimportant" issues to current andfuture generations of Americans asthe result of a new gift toHolocaust Museum Houston.

The Museum recentlyannounced that Dershowitz willbe the first in a line of interna-tionally known speakers broughtto Houston by the Museum in thenew 20-year-long, free publicprogram series underwritten bySaranne and Livingston Kosbergand Dolores and the late BuddyWilkenfeld.

More than 600 people areexpected to hear Dershowitzspeak on the topic “Is There aNew Antisemitism?” at 7:30p.m., on Wednesday, Jan. 17,2007, in the Becker Theater atthe Emery/Weiner School at9825 Stella Link Road. Hisappearance is free and open tothe public, but reservations arerequired, and seating is expectedto be at capacity. To registeronline, visit www.hmh.org/regis-ter.asp.

Dershowitz also will speakin a separate, private session withstudents at the school earlier inthe day.

His presentation will focuson the irrational hatred againstIsrael by extreme left andextreme right factions, which –he argues – seems to increase asIsrael makes concessions forpeace. He argues that it cannot beunderstood without acknowledg-ing that Israel is the Jewish stateand is being treated by extremistsas the Jew among nations.

Dershowitz – one of thenation's best-known defenders ofindividual rights – calls this “thenewest manifestation of the old-est of bigotries.”

Dershowitz’ appearance isthe first of the Kosberg-Wilkenfeld DistinguishedLectures hosted by the Museum, with special thanks toContinental Airlines, official air-line of the Museum.

The value of the gift was notannounced, but MuseumChairman Peter N. Berkowitzsaid the gift was “an incrediblysignificant advance to ourMuseum’s public outreachefforts to teach the world the dan-

gers of hatred, prejudice and apathy.”“With this gift, our Museum

can further the public discussionon significant, strategic issuesthat will impact the world andhow each and every one of ustreats each other for generationsto come,” Berkowitz said.

The gift was made in memo-ry of Ruth Vinn Hendler Lack, aHolocaust survivor who served as

the second executive director ofthe Museum. Lack was killed in acar accident in 1994, ending sever-al years of service at the Museum.

“We believe that offeringthis caliber of programming at nocost to the public is in keepingwith the hopes and dreams thatRuth had for Holocaust MuseumHouston and the impact that theMuseum could have on our com-

munity. We want to help fulfillthose aspirations,” saidLivingston Kosberg.

Dolores Wilkenfeld recalledher sense of loss when Lack diedand added, “We know how muchthe Museum meant to her and theexpectations she had for the pro-gramming which could emanate

NEW YORK -Globalization,corporate mergers, ethics: Thesemay dominate today’s businessheadlines, but the real news isminority youth turning their ideasinto profitable business ventures.

They’re getting help from theWall Street Project, this month atits 10th Annual Wall StreetEconomic Summit and Conferenceat the Sheraton New York Hotel &Towers. Founded by Rev. Jesse L.

This year, about 150 highschool students from New YorkCity's public schools attended theconference to learn about thestock market, they also learnedabout what it takes to start theirown businesses. Facilitators fromthe Young Entrepreneurs Camptaught students how to developfeasible business concepts, assesstheir products and marketability, design a business plan, and applyfor venture capital and marketing. They also learned how to developideas using technology and explorehow to use their business acumento benefit their communities.

“The Wall Street Projectexists to promote AfricanAmericans success in business, and there's no better way to dothat than by bringing in our brightyoung people,” Rev. Jackson said.“As they excel, they become rolemodels for their peers and everyperson of color.”

“Financial literacy and eco-nomic development are a keycomponent of the Civil RightsMovement,” said Andrew Carr, director of the Wall StreetProject. “This is an importantpart of the goal of leveling theplaying field.”

Among the hundreds of busi-ness professionals in attendanceat the Wall Street Project confer-ence was 12-year-old JamalBrowder, owner of a family-trav-el agency. Houston City CouncilMember JarvisJohnson has a message for DistrictB constituents,Legislature

HOUSTON – As the District B CityCouncil Member, I am very concerned

when there is a public safety threat tomy constituents. I am also concernedthat a private water company is notproviding the level of service neededto ensure the public safety of the res-idents in the community it serves.

This puts the residents of this com-munity and the City of Houston in a posi-tion of having no authority or control

over their safety, only monitoring bylocal fire person-nel. I therefore callon the StateLegislature to passstronger regulationsgranting the City ofHouston governing, operational andmonitoring, pow-ers over private

water companies when property isannexed into the City. Private compa-nies must also be required to installlarger fire suppression water lines.Water provided for fire safety is just asimportant as water lines providingwater to drink, cook and clean to com-munities.

I am committed to working withState Representatives to ensure thatwe are providing the quality of life

and resourcesnecessary to pro-tect the welfare

Sadly, Alexander died ofcancer several years later. ButGovan vowed to keep alive hiscollaboration with other youngpeople through the Foundation.“It’s definitely an extension ofhis vision,” she said. “It’sreflecting on Alexander being soyoung and coming to me andsaying, ‘Mommy, can you helpme start a business?’”

Through workshops and after-school programs, the Foundationaims to train more than 10,000youngsters by 2010 in order to cre-ate their own youth-led companies.

Carr said he believes the train-ing produces results. “Starting at ayounger age increases the opportu-nity for students’ success,” he said.“A lot of folks in the communitywho’ve started businesses, are stilllooking for basic tools that can betaught at a younger age.”
