WE ARE CALLED TO BE AUTHENTIC WITNESSES OF GOD’S LOVE

It wasn’t just God’s chosen people or the early missionaries who were called to spread the message of God’s love for his people. We, too, are called. By word and example we show whether or not we are to be trusted as honourable witnesses of God’s holy truth. The message of God’s love for his people is lived out in Jesus.

LITURGY OF THE WORD: Isaiah calls Israel to go beyond servanthood to being a light for the nations. Paul begins his letter by offering a prayer of grace and peace. In the Gospel, John the Baptist witnesses to the presence of the Lamb of God.

PARISH SUPPORTER FORMS: Parents with children in Catholic Schools requesting the parish supporter

discount, please phone Fr. MacDonald for an interview. Please bring in your form. The cut off date is Feb-

ruary 10th. By signing this form your Pastor is attesting to the Diocese that you are a regular Mass attendee

and contribute your time, talent and treasure as an active participant in parish life. Thank you, Fr. Bill.

RECEIVING COMMUNION: At all times, but especially during the flu season, it is important to receive Communion in the

proper manner. If receiving on the hand, please extend your hand, palm totally flat, with the other hand underneath the hand you hold flat. Your hand should not be curved. If receiving on the tongue, please stick out your tongue. Do not simply open your mouth. In all cases, when the minister says “the Body of Christ” the response is “Amen”. If you are coming up for a blessing, please come up with your arms crossed in front of you. Also, please come sufficiently close to the minister so that he or she does not have to step forward or bend over. Thank you.

The Parish Council is sponsoring the acclaimed Fr. Robert Barron Word on Fire series: Catholi-

cism. The truth, goodness and beauty of Catholicism is illustrated and explained by Fr. Bar-

ron. The DVD presentations start at 7:00pm, in Our Lady of Lourdes Hall, on the following

dates: January 22, 29; February 5, 12, 19, 26; March 12, 19. Please visit the Word on Fire website for more information: http://www.wordonfire.org/#

A WORD FROM SUSAN ABOUT SINGING THE PSALMS: Several people have asked me lately why we don’t sing the psalm

in the Living With Christ missal and missalette at the 8:30am and 10:30am Masses. For seasons such as Christmas and Lent, and portions of Ordinary Time, we have been singing seasonal psalms as recommended in the Canadian Lectionary. The church sug-gests this as singing a psalm for some weeks at a time allows the congregation to become comfortable with the refrain melody, and also to become more deeply familiar with the text and spiritual message of the whole psalm. We have been singing psalms from the Catholic book of Worship (CBW) for the sake of having the music and text available to congregation and choirs, plus choral arrange-ments that the choir could sing in parts. The one drawback of the CBW is that it is using the language of the former version of the Canadian Lectionary. For the next two seasonal psalms, I have done an arrangement of a couple of approved-language psalms from

the missal, those for January 26 and February 16—so you can bookmark those if you would like to see what you are singing!

WOMEN’S SUPPORT GROUP: Tuesday January 21st, after the noon Mass, in the library. For more in-formation please call Helen McLellan at 250-595-8090 or Clarice Durnerin at 778-265-1004.

DEVELOPMENT AND PEACE COMMITTEE will meet on Tues. Jan. 21 at 7pm in the Parish Library. New people wel-

come. We will be discussing the Fall Action theme “A Voice for Justice – an ombudsman for responsible mining”.

DID YOU KNOW that Development and Peace is advocating for an independent ombudsman for responsible min-ing? Please read this week’s bulletin insert and next weekend join us in signing a card which will be presented to mem-bers of Parliament calling on them to create an independent ombudsman for responsible mining. You can also write to your member of Parliament directly, or visit them in person. Join our campaign, take action.

DONATION ENVELOPES: If you use pre-numbered collection en-velopes, please print your name and address on the envelopes during the months of January and February, so that we can make sure to up-date our parish database. Please do not use old envelopes as the number may have been reassigned to someone else. Envelope User #365 during 2013, please contact the parish office. Thank you.

CWL NEWS: PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE CLOTHING OR ANY OTHER ITEMS IN

THE COAT ROOM. WE WILL START TO COLLECT CLOTHING ONLY FEB 1st. If you are moving and need to drop off clothes, please call the parish office at 250-592-7391 so that we can arrange to have the clothing taken down to our sorting room. THANK YOU FOR YOUR COOPERATION.

NEWS FROM THE HIGH SCHOOL: We are holding our Grade 9 Science

Fair during our school’s Open House on Feb. 6th, from 6pm till 8:30pm. We are hop-ing you can help us by being a judge at our Science Fair. It is an interesting experi-ence if you have never done this before. You get to meet students who have worked very hard to conduct research following the scientific method and are eager to pre-sent their findings. There are many interesting projects. The qualifications are sim-ple. You need to understand the scientific method and things like what a hypothesis or control group is. If you can easily answer those questions then you have the quali-fications to be a judge! We know that judging occurs during normal dinner time and so some light snacks will be made available for you in the judge’s lounge. If you are able to help please contact Kim Arthurs at [email protected] or Doug Ballam at

[email protected]. Thank you!

CAMP HOMEWOOD 2014: Youth camp with Ken Yasinski and his team will be held from January 31st to February 2nd. The cost is $140 per participant. Complete information and registration forms are avail-able at the parish office ([email protected] or 250-592-7391). The event is sponsored by St. Patrick’s Parish, Campbell River and Notre Dame Parish, Port Alberni.

WORLD DAY OF MIGRANTS AND REFUGEES - JANUARY 19: A World Day of Migrants and Refugees is promoted by many Episcopal Con-ferences in the world in communion with the one promoted by the UNO on June 20. “The phenomenon of migration today is a providential opportunity for the proclamation of the Gospel in the contemporary world. Men and women from various regions of the earth who have not yet encountered Je-sus Christ or know him only partially, ask to be received in countries with an ancient Christian tradition. It is necessary to find adequate ways for them to meet and to become acquainted with Jesus Christ and to experience the invaluable gift of salvation .”—Benedict XVI (2012)
