Questions about the budget?

• It is the DH role to use resources wisely and to ensure the department is sound

• We have only one position that will consume more salary resources in the future than now

• We have two new searches, impacts on long-term budget and start-up

• Opportunistic Hiring: What process is appropriate when opportunity occurs? – Campus High Impact Positions (CHIPS)

Departmental Successes and Emerging Issues

Strategic Planning

Strategic Planning

• Last year we developed two strategic plans: – Department Overview and Undergraduate Ed – Graduate Education and Research

• First document was basically a SWOT • Second focused on Research Opportunities • Major pieces of reports were reviewed prev. • Plans will be posted by college on web • Volunteers to review and improve

AFR and Merit Evaluations

– Peer reviewed papers in outstanding journals (Impact factors are important)

– Sufficient conference activity to expose graduate students to their discipline and to promote UMass

– Sponsored research that engages students and provides RA support

– Course delivery commiserate with other activities (student evaluations)

– National Service that reflects on UMass and faculty member, University service, local service
