“The Eucharistdoes not justunite us to Godas individualswho are isolatedf r o m o n eanother. Rather,we are united toChrist togetherwith all the othermembers of the

Mystical Body. The celebration of theEucharist should thus increase our love forone another, and remind us of ourresponsibilities toward one another. Furthermore, as members of the MysticalBody of Christ, we have a duty to representChrist and to bring Christ to the world.” — U. S. Conference of Catholic Bishops

Alcoholruined ourholidays.Dear Padre, Alcohol has ruined ourholidays. Because myspouse drinks so much, I resist attending parties, and Iavoid inviting relatives and friends to our house. Whatdoes the Church teach about alcohol, and where can weget help? — The Sober One

Dear Sober One, The Catholic Church has always regarded excessivedrinking as a moral concern. Today, however, Catholicmoralists and others also recognize alcoholism as more adisease than a sin or personal failing. The disease of alcoholism can be treated if theindividual seeks medical help, avoids alcohol consumptioncompletely, and finds support through a group likeAlcoholics Anonymous. People who deny their drinkingproblems risk physical, emotional, spiritual and socialimpairment — and even death. They also cause greatsuffering to family members, friends and co-workers, andthey place innocent people at risk. The most successful treatment program for alcoholismis active participation in Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). Innearly every city and town of North America, AA groupsmeet regularly. Alcoholics come together to support oneanother, grow through the Twelve Step process, and findacceptance and sobriety. Even if the alcoholic denies the problem and refuses toseek help, the other family members can and should gethelp to understand and cope with this disruptive disease. Al-Anon helps the relatives and friends of alcoholics. Alateen offers support for the adolescent children ofalcoholics. Adult Children of Alcoholics (AcoA) is a morerecent development but a program whose rapid growthtestifies to its great value. Get helpful information aboutthese programs.

The Padre, Fr. Tom Artz, C.SS.R.

AA and AlanonHere at Corpus Christi Parish, AA meetings areheld at 7:00 p.m. on Sundays & Wednesdays inthe Cougar Den. Alanon meets at the same dayand time in the Arts & Sciences Building.

St. Andre Bessette1845-1937

“[In choosing me] God chose the most ignorant one. If there wasanyone more ignorant than I am, God would have chosen him

instead of me.”

Andre Bessette was born in 1845 to a working-class family in Quebec. Orphaned at the age of twelve and lacking any trade or education (hecould not read or write), he was forced to support himself with variousmanual occupations. In time his intense spirituality - particularly hisdevotion to St. Joseph - attracted the attention of a priest, whorecommended that he enter the Holy Cross Order as a lay brother. Upon acceptance, he was assigned the post of doorman. He liked tojoke that on completing his novitiate he was shown the door andremained there for forty years!

Despite his lowly station, Brother Andre’s reputation for holiness beganto grow. He spent much of his spare time visiting the sick, andeventually he was credited with many healing miracles (which he wasalways quick to credit to the mercy of God). Despite fragile health inhis youth, he lived to the age of ninety-one. After his death on January6, 1937, hundreds of thousands of people filed by his coffin. Brother Andre was beatified in 1983 and canonized byPope Benedict XVI in 2010.

Brother Andre said that he was “living proof that it is not necessary to have spent many years in college to love thegood God”. It is also true that no one needs a lot of education (even religious education!) to continue the work ofJesus of proclaiming the Good News of God’s love and mercy, and to come to the aid of those who need our help. All of us have been given what we need to know God’s love and to share that love with everyone we encounter in ourdaily lives. We can all be instruments of God’s peace.

The school of Christ is the school of charity.

On the last day, when the general examination takes place, there will be no questions at all on the texts of Aristotle, the aphorisms of Hippocrates, or the Paragraphs of Justinian.

Charity will be the whole syllabus.

— St. Robert Bellarmine, SJ

St. Jerome, the great biblical scholar of the300s, while living in Palestine, saw theplight of refugees and said: “I cannot helpthem all, but I grieve and weep with them, and am completely absorbed in the dutieswhich charity imposes upon me.

I have put aside my commentary onEzekiel and almost all study. For today wemust translate the precepts of theScriptures into deeds! Instead of speakingsaintly words, we must act on them.”

Jesus said: “I offer you grateful praise, OFather, Lord of heaven and earth, becausewhat has been hidden from the learned andthe clever has been revealed to the simpleand the merest children.” Luke 10:21

St. Isidore the Farmer1070-1130

In March 1622 five great saint were canonized together. They included four of the giant figures of the CatholicReformation: St. Ignatius, St. Francis Xavier, St. Teresaof Avila, and St. Philip Neri. The fifth, St. Isidore stoodapart. He founded no order, he accomplished no greatdeeds (apart from tiling the land); he neither left anyteachings, nor inspired any disciples. He was, in fact, asimple farm worker, born in Madrid, who spent hisentire life in the service of the same wealthy landowner.

With his good wife, Maria, he bore one son, who died inchildhood. He knew the hardships, the toil, and thesorrows of all farm workers then and since. And hedisplayed a simple though profound faith. He attendedMass daily and prayed continuously as he worked thefields. In Isidore’s case, however, his faith was attendedby visible signs and wonders. It was reported, forexample, that angels were seen assisting him as heploughed. He was famous for his generosity towardthose even poorer than himself. His table was alwaysopen to the indigent, while he was content to live on thescraps left over. His kindness extended to animals.

What most stands out is the very ordinariness of his life. He is simply one of the “little ones” so beloved of God. Though not a monk, he passed his life in work andprayer. Though poor himself he poured himself out incharity. In the list of canonized saints his type issurprisingly rare. In heaven, very common.

St. Isidore reminds us that we are not saved by ourbrilliance, but by our devotion and our fidelity.

St. Isidore is the patron saint of farmers. His feast dayis celebrated on May 15.

“Speak withsimple language, and with love....”“At times people don’tunderstand what we aresaying because we haveforgotten the language ofsimplicity and speak with

a foreign intellectualism. For ordinary people, themystery enters through the heart.” — Pope Francis

“Grace is more important thanall the bureaucracy. Manytimes we people of the Churchare like a factory creatingobstacles so people can’tarrive at grace. May the Lordhelp us to understand this. Those in the Church who are incharge of administering thesacraments must leave roomfor God’s grace, and not putbureaucratic obstacles in theway, making it hard for peopleto get close to God.” — Pope Francis

“Spiritual worldliness can lead to a businessmentality, caught up with management, statistics, plans and evaluations whose principle beneficiary isnot God’s people but the Church as an institution.” — Pope Francis

“What is needed is more emphasis onrolling out the red carpet than increating red tape. We are often moreinterested in making everyone attend a stated number of classes than we are atmaking the sacraments available topeople.” – Fr. Joseph Champlin

St. Theresa of Lisieux 1873-1897

St. Therese of the Child Jesus is one of the Church’s most popular saints. She was born in 1873 to Louis Martin, a watchmaker, and Zelie Guérin, alace-maker. She was one of nine children, four of whom died very young. Therese suffered greatly in her early life due to the death of her mother, and she endured years of very difficult mental anguish. Therese’s faithwas strong, and she became a Carmelite nun at the early age of fifteen, after requesting the special permission of her bishop and the pope. Shelived in the Carmelite convent of Lisieux, France, joining two of her sistersthere. Her other two sisters also became nuns. Her nine years there seemed uneventful and ordinary, yet were veryheroic. Therese realized that sanctity could be achieved in and through thesimple routines and daily work of life. Instead of ambitiously seeking todo great things, she contented herself with following her “little way” –

simple trust in and love for God, and the attempt to glorify Him in everything she did, no matter how insignificant. She considered herself the “little flower,” more ordinary than a rose, unseen by the world, yet beautiful and cherishedby God nonetheless. She once said, “I prefer the monotony of obscure sacrifice to all ecstasies. To pick up a pin for love can converta soul.” Therese suffered from poor health all her life, but, in spite of her frailty, she spent many hours of hard workin the convent laundry and refectory. During her last year of life, she contracted tuberculosis and suffered greatly before dying at the very young age oftwenty-four. Her Autobiography, written in obedience to her superiors, was later published under the title The Storyof A Soul. As she died, she clutched a crucifix, and repeated, “Oh, how I love Him!” She was canonized a saint, and, although she had written no great theological works, and actually nothing more thanher simple “autobiography,” Pope John Paul II proclaimed her a Doctor of the Church in 1997, recognizing theprofound insight and teaching in her small, single work, her autobiography.

“It is not because I have been preserved from serious sin that I lift up my heart to God in trust and love. I am certain thateven if I had on my conscience every imaginable sin, I should lose nothing of my confidence, but would throw myself, myheart broken with sorrow, into the arms of my Savior.”

“Holiness is not one exercise or another. It consists in a disposition of the heart, which renders us humble and little in thehands of God, conscious of our weakness, but confident, even daringly confidence, in God’s goodness.”

“I know of no other means to arrive at perfection except love. To love – how well our hearts are made for that!”

“I cannot bring myself to hunt throughbooks for beautiful prayers. There areso many of them that I get a headache. Besides, each prayer seems lovelierthan the next. I cannot possibly saythem all and do not know which tochoose. I behave like a child whocannot read: I tell God what I want andHe always understands. For me,prayer is an upward leap of the heart,an untroubled glance towards heaven,a cry of gratitude and love which Iutter from the depths of sorrow as wellas from the heights of joy...”
