From the Desk of Fr. Sebastian,
Dear Friends,
Today we celebrate the Baptism of Jesus. With this Feast we conclude the season of Christmas and begin Ordinary time. Even though we celebrated the Feast of the Epiphany last Sunday, Epiphany in its fullest sense took place at the baptism of Jesus. This was the only incident recorded in the Bible where all three Persons in the Trinity appeared together. On the day of his baptism, God formally introduced Jesus to the world as His Beloved Son.
Baptism was a sign of repentance. Therefore, the question is why did Jesus receive baptism? Jesus received baptism not for himself but for us. He received baptism for us and on our behalf.
People who came to John to be baptized were sinners. They were aware of their sinfulness but did not know the direction for a better life. They did not know how to break the chain of their sinful life. They were like sheep without a shepherd. Jesus came to their aid. He joined the crowd. He identified himself with them by sharing their baptism. By that scandalous act, he owned the world that was broken and wounded by sin and accepted the lost sheep as his own. He carried the whole world on his shoulders. As Peter rightly put it, “He himself bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we might die to sin and live in righteousness. By his wounds you have been healed.” (1 Peter 2.24).
The first step in the World of Jesus’ ethics is having a sense of solidarity with other human beings. He did not lead them as an outsider. He stood with them, defended them, protected them and finally took the place of ‘Isaac.” When the soldiers came to arrest him, Jesus told them, “I told you that I am he. If you are looking for me, then let these men go.”
When we receive baptism, we receive a new identity and we join the mission of Jesus through the Church. Baptism incorporates us into the Body of Christ (Church). We receive a communal identity. Communion with one another becomes the mode of our existence. The Eucharistic Liturgy celebrates this communion. So a person who is not in communion with his/her brothers and sisters is still far away from Jesus’ world (the Kingdom of God).
Similarly, baptism entrusted us with Jesus’ mission. The lighted candle we receive at the time of our baptism symbolizes this new mission. Our mission is a mission of hope. Our mission is to heal the ‘broken hearted’ and clothe the ‘outcast’ with human dignity.
May God bless you.

It’s not to late to make a donation to SFX Church or to the School Challenge Grant.
If you would like to make a donation you can drop it in the collection basket on the weekends or deliver it to the parish
office. Just put a December 2020 date on your donation and we will process it for 2020.
Thank you for your support of our Church and School throughout the Year. Tax letters will
be sent to parish families before January 31, 2021.
Special Collection for The Painting of SFX Buildings
Although ALL beautification projects are on hold until Church attendance and donations return to normalcy, January 9th and
10th 2021 was designated as the weekend that we would collect donations towards the repainting of the outside of all our
buildings at St. Francis Xavier. We are hopeful and look forward to the day that we can once
again pursue these types of projects. If you would like to donate to our future repainting project, you can use one of the
bright pink envelopes we received in our packet designated “Exterior Paint Fund” or you can write “Exterior Paint Fund” on the memo line of your check and drop it in the collection basket or to the Parish Office. The money donated will be put aside and saved specifically for this purpose in hopefully the near future.

MASS INTENTIONS
Why It Is So Important To Tell The Truth
As parents, we teach our children that the truth
is important. In fact, the truth is a critical part
of the healing process for victim-survivors of
abuse. When a victim-survivor tells the truth
about abuse that has happened to him or her, it
robs the secret of its power and begins to break
down any fear surrounding it. This helps a
victim-survivor on the path to being free from
the effects of abuse and enables the church and
other institutions to take appropriate action to
keep others safe. For more information about
the importance of truth-telling, visit https://
lacatholics.org/did-you-know/.
