01Housingand Productivity as Instruments of

UrbanReconnection

The goal of this proposal is to bring together two neighborhoods alienated from each other by the train tracks at Forest Hills while embracing the idea of the tracks spatially to empower a notion of urban pedestrianism. The new neighborhood respects the existing light industrial condition while introducing a higher density residential identity within it. The result is a hybridized lifestyle of the urban home with spaces of productivity. Productive landscapes are then brought down to the train tracks to help diminish the rift’s divisive power and reintroduce it as a unifier of people and industry.

The residents live within a layering of elevated landscape to reconnect the passage to and from home with the influences of nature. Each unit is open to the outdoors on both the north and south sides to create a continuity of light as well as create an opportunity for passive ventilation. Vegetation, sunlight, and vertical spaces are used as entry thresholds to each unit by pulling the corridor away from from the unit entry. This further tightens the relationship and blurs the lines between the home and the natural setting of Forest Hills.

02Ropewalks

of New England

This 20 foot long replica of an 18th century naval ropemaking building helps trace the history, vitatlity and economic significance of the ropemaking industry in colonial Boston. The model has served as the centerpiece of The Boston West End Museum’s “Ropewalks of the West End and Beyond” exhibit as well as The Wentworth Alumni Library’s “Boston’s West End: Moving Forward, Looking Back.” Facing a low budget and little support, the greatest challenge and success of this volunteer exhibit production was in the process of locating, recovering, and recycling wasted and donated materials. The conservation efforts made resulted in the completion of this monumental task for the museum at almost no cost.

03Haus Am Kleistpark

Performing Arts Center

Haus Am Kliestpark serves the musical commu-nity of urban Berlin as a performance Hall, public gathering space, and addition to the existing Kliestpark School of Mu-sic. The primary goal of this project was to create spaces for multidisciplary students to practice, perform, and interact in a place that is better connected with the rich urban setting of Berlin as well as the natural continuity of the parks that cross on this site. At an urban scale this proposal expands and defines the major public space at the U-bahn station, by vi-sually opening up the site and exposing the spatial backdrop of the Elssholzstrasse streetwall. In order to revitalize the connection between the street and Kleistpark, the pedestri-an park entry is expanded, the corner of the existing music school is emphasized to announce a crossing from one park to the other, and the school addition extends a façade line into the park to reveal the once hidden path into Kleistpark.

Within the public interior of the performing arts center, an angular tension is created with the shifting of the interior forms to activate the space. Apertures at interior corners distinguish the shifted forms from one another. This eases the tension and creates moments of continuity between the interior and exterior.

Urban Sanctuary andColumbarium

In this exploration of light, mass, and symbolic space, an expansion upon a historic burial ground creates a sacred place of reflection, a space for the community to come together, and a safe home for the cremated remains of the dearly departed.\ Each urnwell is carved into concrete and, with a beam of light, is periodically engaged in communication with the sky.

Cartography Headquarters

Using the elements as well as the texture and form of the earth on site for their generative geometries, a space is created for the map makers of the world where they can gather, research, and display the fruits of their labor. Here they can experience their studies in a place assembled through the phenomena that they watch and record.

The landscape around the building footprint is excavated and molded to provide the dual function of outdoor program areas as well as become the formwork for the land-cast walls that are to be pulled from the ground.
