Why do writers choose to tell childrens’ stories? This is not an exact quote, but when Natalie Babbitt, who wrote the book Tuck Everlasting was interviewed recently, she noted that children often are not considered people until they reach the age of 18. They are loved and taken care of but not always appreciated for their full potential as citizens of our community.

One beautiful thing about working and playing at the Woodruff Arts Center is that kids just keep showing up at our doors — sometimes with their parents — sometimes in yellow buses, sometimes in our

classrooms and camps. Yes, they are our future. You hear that a lot, but they are also are a critical part of our “now.” One of the advantages of having an honest-to-goodness 12-year-old in the cast and an 11-year-old understudy is that throughout the rehearsal process we were always able to see and learn from their perspectives.

Even in rare moments when they did not have a lot to say, their understanding of James’ journey helped all of us to interpret all of the characters’ journeys.

Roald Dahl zeroed-in on the plight of young protagonists; he understood the special nature and desires of folks in the early part of life’s journey. I love the advice in his book Danny, the Champion of the World: “When you grow up and have children of your own, do please remember something important: A stodgy parent is no fun at all. What a child wants and deserves is a parent who is SPARKY.”

We hope we have made this production as SPARKY as possible both to honor the work of Mr. Dahl and to reflect the minds and hearts of the many youthful citizens of all ages who will take this peachy journey with us.

Thank you, Tim McDonald and Pasek and Paul, for this lovely new version of the tale and thank you young people, for constant wisdom and inspiration.

Blessings, Rosemary

Thanks to the generosity of the Lettie Pate Evans Foundation, the Alliance Theatre, in partnership with the High Museum

of Art and the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, is expanding its family offerings in a significant way this summer. We’re thrilled to kick off this family initiative with our first ever summer Theatre for Youth & Families production, Mo Willems’ Knuffle Bunny: A Cautionary Musical. This play will be produced in collaboration with the High Museum of Art’s exhibition Seriously Silly: A Decade of Art & Whimsy by Mo Willems, marking the first ever large-scale collaboration between these two cultural pillars of the Atlanta community. Based on the beloved children’s book by Willems, Knuffle Bunny comes to life in this funny, heart-warming, one-act production. Trixie, Daddy, and

Page 14: James and the Giant Peach at the Alliance Theatre

ENCOREATLANTA.COM14

Knuffle Bunny take a trip to the laundromat. But the adventure takes a dramatic turn when Trixie realizes her bunny was left behind. Using live actors and beautiful projections, this play tells a true-to-life tale about what happens when Daddy’s in charge and things go terribly, hilariously wrong. Directed by Rosemary Newcott, the Sally G. Tomlinson Artistic Director of Theatre for Youth & Families, Knuffle Bunny runs May 27-June 21 on the Alliance’s Hertz Stage. More information: alliancetheatre.org/knufflebunny.

Additionally, beginning in June, every Sunday will be family fun day at the Woodruff Arts Center, featuring free activities and experiences designed for young ones and their caregivers. As you contemplate your summer plans, please swing by

the Arts Center on a Sunday between 1 and 4 p.m. to discover what artful fun awaits you on our campus.

For those interested in making their own theatre, the Alliance offers dozens of different drama camp opportunities for all ages with topics ranging from musical theatre to improv comedy. In each camp, students will discover the joy of acting, will learn to work in an ensemble with new friends, and will present a showcase for family and friends on the final day. More information: alliancetheatre.org/dramacamps.

So let this journey with James be only the beginning! Adventures every bit as thrilling as riding across the ocean on a Giant Peach await you this summer at the Woodruff Arts Center.

synopsis When James is sent by his conniving aunts to chop down their old fruit tree, he discovers a magic potion which results in a tremendous peach — and launches a journey of enormous proportions. Suddenly, James finds himself in the center of the gigantic peach among human-sized insects with equally oversized personalities, but after it falls from the tree and rolls into the ocean, the group faces hunger, sharks and plenty of disagreements. Thanks to James’ quick wit and creative thinking, the residents learn to live and work together as a family. The dangerous voyage is a success, but the adventure takes a whole new twist once they land on the Empire State Building.

The third-grade Jr. Dramaturgs of Clairemont Elementary School, The Museum School of Avondale Estates,

and Sawyer Road Elementary School spent time studying the book and script for James and the Giant Peach. Imagining the characters from the real world, to the world of the book by Roald Dahl, to a costume design for the play, the Jr. Dramaturgs drew out their concepts and ideas.

The Dramaturgy by Students program is a “real world” project in which an Alliance Theatre Institute Theatre teaching artist collaborates with a classroom teacher and students as they serve as Jr. Dramaturgs for an actual Alliance stage production. The Jr. Dramaturgs’ research process includes reading the play, researching the author of the source material, characters, settings, historical and science content and other subjects that may provide information for the audience, director, actors and designers of the play.

Q: You just won recognition for writing a play about family dynamics. What inspired you to write it?A: My homeroom teacher, Greg, often emphasized how exciting and interesting this opportunity would be and encouraged all of us to try and actually write a play. As for the actual script, I knew for certain I didn’t want to make anything stereotypical or cliché unless it involved turning that stereotype or cliché on its head. That’s the main reason why Fermi’s mother, Gen, is the one who’s MIA. Women are often portrayed as weak and submissive, so she became the one in the war instead of the father. Mostly, I just played with different ideas and figured out what worked and what didn’t.

Q: Do you have any ideas brewing for another play?A: Right now, my mind is emptier than a cookie tin left in a junior high classroom unattended. There are a lot of crumbs, but there is nothing that well-developed nor has anything been actively brainstormed.

Q: In James and the Giant Peach, James finds a new “family” in the outrageous group of “transformed insects” who travel with him. Are you aware of any “out of the ordinary” families in your world?A: I believe that every family is extraordinary and different in their own way. Every single one of us is unique, so what would be considered an ordinary family? Even a family that appears absolutely boring and “normal” from the outside probably has some kind of quirk. The concept of family can be defined in a variety of ways. A spiritual family may or may not be different from a biological family or maybe even an extended family that includes many close friends. Considering this, I can’t think of any families that are close to ordinary in my limited world. Often, even those that appear ordinary on the surface aren’t so ordinary up close. It’s just a question of actually opening your eyes and looking.

about the alliance theatreFounded in 1968, the Alliance Theatre has become the leading producing theatre in the Southeast, creating the powerful experience of shared theatre for diverse people. The Alliance values excellence, pursued with integrity and creativity, and achieved through collaboration. Reaching more than 200,000 patrons annually, the Alliance delivers powerful programming that challenges adult and youth audiences to think critically and care deeply. Under the leadership of Susan V. Booth, the Jennings Hertz Artistic Director, the Alliance Theatre, in 2007, received the Regional Theatre Tony Award in recognition of sustained excellence in programming, education and community engagement.

Known for its high artistic standards and national role in creating significant theatrical works, the Alliance has premiered more than 80 original productions including Tony Award winners The Color Purple by Alice Walker, Aida by Elton John and Tim Rice, and Alfred Uhry’s The Last Night of Ballyhoo. The Alliance has a reputation for developing important American musicals with a strong track record of Broadway, touring and subsequent productions, including the world premieres of Sister Act: The Musical; Come Fly Away; Bring It On: The Musical; Stephen King and John Mellencamp’s Ghost Brothers of Darkland County; the American premiere of Zorro, with music by the Gipsy Kings; and most recently, Bull Durham and Harmony: A New Musical by Barry Manilow and Bruce Sussman. The Alliance also nurtures the careers of playwrights through the Alliance/Kendeda National Graduate Playwriting Competition, producing a premiere for the competition winner as part of the regular season, and the Reiser Atlanta Artists Lab, providing developmental support and production resources for three performing arts projects each year. The work produced by the Alliance gives locally based artists the chance to create on a nationally watched stage, building and sustaining Atlanta’s artistic community.

Each year the Alliance Theatre Acting Program and Education Department reaches close to 50,000 students through performances, acting classes, drama camps and in-school initiatives. The Alliance creates and produces plays for young audiences at every age level, from the Collision Project, where high school artists create and perform new work based on a classic text, to the groundbreaking Theatre for the Very Young, creating interactive shows for infants and toddlers. The Alliance also offers community education classes for all ages and abilities of theatre interest, and adult student productions of unproduced plays in development, working with local and national playwrights.

An active participant in Georgia classrooms, the Alliance has developed programs using theatrical techniques to aid in student learning through storytelling and problem-solving. The Alliance’s Institute for Educators and Teaching Artists equips teachers with theatrical techniques that link directly to school curriculum, align with the Common Core Georgia Performance Standards and increase student learning. These programs include Georgia Wolf Trap Early Learning Through the Arts, which focuses on literacy skills for children in Pre-K–2nd grade, and Dramaturgy K–12, in which students create research material that informs Alliance productions and prepares peer audiences. Twice recognized by the U.S. Education Department as leaders in arts education, these programs reflect the Alliance’s commitment to citywide arts access.

The Alliance delivers the finest talent, art and educational opportunities for Atlanta audiences — proving once again that the Alliance is where great theatre lives.

annual fund

Do you appreciate live theatre, enjoy meeting new people and trying new things? If so, then get involved with one of the largest volunteer forces in the arts. The Alliance Theatre volunteer STARS program offers a wide range of opportunities, which includes advocating for live theatre, ushering for Alliance productions, participating in and staffing fundraising & hospitality events, and assisting Alliance staff members with daily office tasks. STARS is composed of four separate organizations working together on fund-saving and fund-raising projects to benefit

the theatre. The four volunteer groups are the Alliance Children’s Theatre Guild, Alliance Theatre Guild, the Direct Volunteers and the Usher Corps.

For more information on becoming a volunteer, please contact Shana Orr at 404.733.4761 or [email protected].

Patients now have somewhere to turn

The future of cancer treatment is here. And it’s only available at WellStar. WellStar is the only health system in metro Atlanta to offer TomoTherapy® and CyberKnife® for the treatment of both cancerous and non-cancerous tumors.

TomoTherapyUnlike conventional systems, which allow radiation to be delivered from only a few directions, TomoTherapy rotates in 360 degrees, meaning that treatments can be delivered continuously to the tumor from every angle. More beam directions give physicians more control in how they plan treatments – and more assurance that the dose will be confined to the tumor.

CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery SystemThe CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery System involves no cutting, and for many, can offer a non-invasive alternative to surgery for the treatment of tumors. The system is composed of a radiation delivery device, which is mounted on a flexible robotic arm which enables CyberKnife to deliver radiation to tumors anywhere in the body. Its exceptional tracking ability eliminates the need for patients to have stabilizing head frames or limited breathing during treatment.

Tumors have nowhere to hide
