These boots are made for walkingNaast activiteiten die niet typisch scouting zijn, zoals

een tripje naar Walibi ga je op de Jamborette natuurlijk ook gewoon ouderwets op hike. Er is zelfs keuze uit verschillende hikes. Lange en kortere, in de stad of in de polder. Relaxed of juist hard doorlopen. Wat heeft jouw voorkeur?

De meest eenvoudige hike is de Polderhike. Net zoals de naam al zegt, loop je door de polders. Tussen de koeien en paarden in de weilanden moet je uitvinden of je links of rechts gaat. Ongeveer 13 kilometer loopt de tocht door het vlakke Nederland. De Invent your own hike is een heel ander verhaal, een beetje science f iction en een beetje van jezelf. Geen enkel groepje loopt precies hetzelfde rondje. Op diverse momenten in de 15 kilometer lange route kies je zelf welke kant je opgaat.

Find your way homeDe kortste hike van 10 kilometer loopt door het centrum van Haarlem: de Cityhike. En nee, het is

niet dezelfde route als bij Jambotours. Je gaat Haarlem op een totaal andere manier bekijken. Zelfs voor groepen uit de buurt is de tocht erg leuk. Loop je lekker door, dan heb je daarna tijd om een boodschapje te doen of naar de kapper te gaan, zoals de leiding van een groep deze week deed. De Drop-out hike is helaas alleen voor 14+, maar dit is ook wel de zwaarste hike. “Het was verschrikkelijk, maar we hebben wel het record gehaald”, vertelt Matthew van de Clifton Methodist trots. Andy vult aan: “We hebben 7 uur en 45 minuten gelopen over ruim 25 kilometer.” Met de bus wordt

je ergens in de omgeving afgezet en zie dan maar dat je terug komt!

Besides the activities that are not typical of scouting, like the trip

to Walibi, you do get the chance to go on a hike at the Jamborette. The hikes come in all shapes and sizes. You can choose between long and short ones, in the city or the countryside, relaxing or challenging. Which is your preference?

The simplest hike is the Polderhike. What’s in a name? This hike takes you through the Dutch polders. Between

meadows with cattle you make your decisions to go left of right. About 13 kilometres of hiking through flat country. The Invent your own hike is a whole different story, even we don’t know where this hike will take you. That’s because on several points in the road you will be choosing your own path on this 15 kilometre hike.

Find your way homeThe shortest hike of 10 kilometres is the City hike. The city hike takes you through the city of Haarlem. This route will obviously be different to the one from Jambotours. You will get a totally different view of the old centre. When you walk fast you will have some time left for grocery shopping or as the leaders of one group did this week, get a hair cut. The Drop-out hike is not for the faint-hearted, therefore only scouts 14+ can join. “It was terrible, but we got a record!”, Matthew from the Clifton Methodist group says proudly. Andy adds: “We walked 25 kilometres in 7 hours and 45 minutes.” In the morning you are dropped off by coach and you have to find your own way home.

Happy Birthday! Get the pictureDie van gisteren was oh zo gemakkelijk.

Iedereen die in het Internet café is geweest, heeft vast de poster gezien met de portofoon. Niet te missen toch? Nathan Dean van de 1st Mayo Scouts had het juiste antwoord. Gefeliciteerd!

Oké probeer dan de foto van vandaag. Je krijgt zelfs een tip. ‘Hij gaat snel voorbij…’ Schrijf je antwoord op en doe het in de rode brievenbus bij de Info tent of DM naar @Jamborette.

Yesterdays ‘Get the picture’ was oh so easy.

Everyone who has visited the Internet café, will have seen the large poster showing the two-way radio. You just couldn’t miss it could you? Nathan Dean of the 1st Mayo Scouts had the right answer. Congratulations!

How do they do?

Tijdens het kamp onderzoeken we hoe scouting er in een

ander land aan toe gaat. Vandaag een groep Noorse scouts: de Madla scouts uit Stavanger

De groep bestaat uit jongens en meisjes tussen de 10 en 16 jaar oud. Hun leiding is volgens de scouts tussen de 17 en 70 jaar oud. Iets te hoog geschat, bleek later. De scouts zijn per vliegtuig naar de Jamborette gekomen. De scouts slapen in groene piramide tenten en eten in hun gepionierde keuken. Koken doen ze in de centrale tent.

UniformAlle scouts dragen een lichtblauwe scoutingblouse en een blauwe das met groene, rode en witte strepen. De Noorse scouts dragen geen hoofddeksel.

Bram: Ahhhh chicken!ActivitiesDeze groep bestaan uit zowel een land- als een watertak. De waterscouts zijn vooral bezig met kanoën, zeilen, knopen en varen. “We varen heel veel, maar we zijn ook druk met het onderhoud. Daar zijn we zelf verantwoordelijk voor”, aldus één van de waterscouts. De landscouts hiken veel, maar ze zijn ook vaak creatief bezig. Ook zijn de scouts fanatiek bezig om badges te verdienen. Zowel de landscouts als de waterscouts vinden kamperen het allerleukste om te doen.

DifferencesOok de Noorse scouts vinden dat vooral het landschap in Nederland anders is: “Holland is ontzettend plat.” Een andere scout merkt op dat er in Nederland heel veel kanalen zijn die de Noren thuis niet hebben. Ook het weer is anders: “In Noorwegen regent het heel vaak en hier is dat een stuk minder.” (En wij hier maar klagen…). De Noren maken graag dingen. “Veel meer dan de Nederlanders. We hebben al een keer onze eigen bad gebouwd, zelf een fiets geknutseld om onze eigen energie op te wekken en een 16 meter hoge toren gepionierd. We sliepen toen helemaal bovenin de toren. Dat was super gaaf!”

At this section we describe scouting in another country.

Today we will examine scouting in Norway. We interviewed the Malda scouts from Stavanger.

The group exists of boys and girls between 10 and 16 years, the scouts think that their

leaders are between 17 and 70 years old out. Later this estimate proved to be way too high. The scouts traveled to the Jamborette by plane. They sleep in their green pyramid tents and eat in a pioneered kitchen. Cooking takes place at the central tent.

UniformAll scouts wear a light blue uniform. Their scarf is blue with green, red and white stripes. The Norwegian scouts don’t have headwear.

ActivitiesThe group has got a land and a water section. The water scouts do things like canoeing, sailing, making knots and boating. “We boat a lot, but we also do a lot of maintenance of our craft”, says one of the water scouts. The land scouts hike a lot, but they also like to get creative. Both water and land scouts like camping the best.

DifferencesAlso the Norwegian scouts think that the landscape in the Netherlands is the biggest difference: “Holland is very flat.” Another scout says that there are a lot of canals in the Netherlands, which you don’t see in Norway. Also the weather is much different: “In Norway it rains a lot more than in the Netherlands.” If we look at the scouting activities the Norwegian scouts do a lot more arts and craft activities. “We make a lot more things by hand. For instance, we have built our own hot tub, built a bicycle ourselves and pioneered a 16 meter high tower. We slept in the top, that was really cool!”

Please help out the Programme leaders, they really need the night off...

Clean-up dayIn het subkamp van de Egyptenaren is het een drukte van

belang bij de Overton groep. Alle tenten moeten grondig worden schoongemaakt. “De stomste dag van het kamp”, zegt Rosie lachend. “Je neemt toch geen foto van mijn ondergoed hè?” Gelukkig zijn de andere dagen tot nu toe heel leuk geweest. “De Beurtvaart vond ik het leukste. We hadden dan ook heel mooi weer.” Van feesten ’s avonds is nog niet veel gekomen. “Daar was ik te moe voor’, verklaart Rosie.

is very busy. All the tents have to be cleaned up thoroughly. “Worst day at camp”, Rosie smiles. “You are not taking a picture of my undies, are you? ”The other days have been very good so far. “I liked Beurtvaart the best. The weather was also fantastic that day.” Rosie hasn’t been partying much. “I was too tired for that,” she explains.

Love is in the air

It’s a SmurfBij de groep 1st Douglas van de Romeinen loopt wel een heel vreemd f iguur rond. Hij heet Scott en hij heeft een ‘morphsuit’ aan. Een pak

van top tot teen in de kleuren van de Schotse vlag: blauw met wit. Hij is net een smurf. Scott vertelt: “Ik vind het wel gaaf, alleen kan ik niets zien.” Dus als je hem ziet bij Club Recharge ga dan uit de weg want hij botst steeds tegen iedereen aan.

suit from head to toe in the colours of the Scottish f lag: blue and white. Just like a Smurf. Scott says: “It’s cool but I can’t see a thing.” So if you see Scott at Club Recharge, get out of his way because he bumps into people all the time.

Hey, Romans at the Inca’s!Wie naar deze foto kijkt, ziet op het eerste gezicht niets vreemds.

Gewoon een subkamp vol met scouts. Als je beter kijkt, zie echter dat de scouts niet op dit terrein thuishoren. Ze dragen allemaal een rode das terwijl Inca’s een oranje das horen te dragen. Hoe dat kan? Een fotograaf was op zoek naar een leuke foto van het kampterrein. Subkamp Inca’s leek daarvoor het meeste geschikt met zijn torens maar de bewoners ervan waren vrijdag weg. Voor een gezellige foto hebben we toen maar even de Romeinen geleend.

When you look at this photo you see nothing strange at

first. Just a sub camp with a lot of scouts. But if you look closely, you will see that these scouts do not belong in this sub camp. They wear a red scarf while all the Inca’s wear a orange scarf. How is that possible? Our photographer needed a photo of the camp site and chose the tower at the Inca’s camp because it gave the best view. But unfortunately the inhabitants were away. So we had to borrow some Romans.

Vandaag vieren de Chinezen Zeven Zusters Dag. Wat is dat nou weer? Dat de Chinese

variant van Valentijnsdag, dus overal in het subkamp is liefde te vinden. Alle Chinezen hebben een nummertje gekregen. Vind je het moeilijk om op die ene leuke jongen of

dat meisje af te stappen? Dan kun je zeggen dat je graag met nummer 342 een ijsje wilt eten. Dat is pas handig!

Today the Chinese celebrate Seven Sisters Day! What is that you say? It is the Chinese

version of Valentines Day, so love is all over the place at the sub camp. All Chinese were given a number. Do you f ind it hard to make a move with the one great boy or girl? You can just say that you want to get an ice cream with number 342. That’s clever!

German or English?

Van de week kwam subkampleider Ivo van de Inca’s naar de redactie toe. Hij vertelde dat er op zijn kamp een groep Britse jongens druk bezig was om te koken

voor een groep Schotse dames. We namen een kijkje.

Aangekomen bij het kamp waren de jongens van de 24th Bassingstoke West Scout Group al druk in de weer. Ze hadden de tafel aangekleed met een tafelkleed, bloemen, placemats en naamkaartjes. Zoals altijd, was het wachten op de vrouwen. Ondertussen raakten we in gesprek. De leiding vertelde dat de groep uit een Ierse en een Engelse groep is samengesteld. De Ierse leidster woonde namelijk vroeger in Engeland en heeft zodoende nog steeds contact met haar oude groep.

First impressionsHet eten was inmiddels gereed en de dames van de Girl Guiding Scotland groep waren gearriveerd. De jongens stonden als echte obers klaar om de ze te bedienen en indruk te maken. “Ze zijn zo aardig. En zo leuk...”, droomt scout Tomas hardop. De jongens zijn heel gastvrij en we mogen gezellig aanschuiven. En ondanks hun verlegenheid zijn de dames gevleid: “Ik vind die bloemen leuk. Dat is echt super lief!”, klonk het in de tent. Of er uiteindelijk nog iets moois is ontstaan, is ons niet bekend. Wel hebben we ons uitstekend vermaakt. Bedankt voor de gastvrijheid jongens!

Last week Ivo, sub camp leader of the Inca’s, came to the editorial desk at the Jambo Journal. He told us that a group of British boy scouts were preparing food

for a group of Scottish girl guides. We took a look.

When we arrived at the camp the scouts from the 24th Bassingstoke West Scout Group were already busy. They had decorated the table with a tablecloth, f lowers, place mats and name cards. As always, we had to wait before the ladies were ready. In the meantime we had a conversation. The leaders told us that the group is a composition of English and Irish scouts. The Irish leader had been living in England for a number of years and she still has contact with her old group.

First impressionsAfter a while the food was ready and the girls from the Girlguiding Scotland group arrived. The boys were standing there like real waiters, just to impress the girls. “They are so pretty. And so fun …”, scout Tomas said. The scouts were very hospitable and they offered us dinner as well. Despite their shyness the girls are pretty impressed: “I like the f lowers. That is so sweet!”, we heard at the tent. We don’t know if they really started something new, but we had a great time. Thanks for your hospitality guys!

Duitse groepen zijn vaak te herkennen aan de zwarte Yurts

gemaakt door een zwart zeil om een driepoot heen te spannen. De Duitsers zijn echter niet de enige groep met dit type tent. Er is bijvoorbeeld ook een aantal Engelse groepen met zulke tenten. Eén van deze groepen, de 7th Ashford Group, gebruikt de tent als keukenzeil. Handig!

You can recognize German groups by the black Jurte

tents, made of a black shelter and pioneer poles. However, not only German groups have this kind of tent. For instance also English groups use them. One of these groups, the 7th Ashford uses the tent for their kitchen. Handy!
