Word of the

Otávio Lage de Siqueira FilhoCEO of Jalles Machado

President

Respect to the environment and the human being are principles of our company. Over the years, we have reinforced this commitment to the pillars of sustainability, always adopting practices to mitigate the negative impacts of economic activity, investing in new sustainable technologies and promoting actions to ensure the preservation of natural resources and contribute to the development of the community.

Since the company's foundation, we produce ethanol, a clean fuel, generating jobs and income in the rural area of Brazil. Ethanol not only generates development, but also reduces by 90% the emission of gases that cause the greenhouse effect, when compared to gasoline.

We are constantly trying to innovate and adopt business strategies that provide financial, social and environmental gains. We were pioneers in Goiás in the production of bioelectricity from the sugarcane bagasse. It is a renewable energy source which contributes to the electrical supply of electricity to Brazilian homes.

This process also lets us generate carbon credits. We were the first company in the world to be revalidated by the UN for the second trading period of carbon credits (CDM mechanism - the Kyoto Protocol).

It is the land and resources that makes possible the cultivation of sugar cane and we understand that we need to preserve it. We seek to adopt cultivation practices that generate less impact on the soil and the

environment, such as green manure, mechanical harvesting and biological pest control. Our water management program is recognized and awarded by the National Water Agency.

Although we face innumerous challenges in the ethanol market and have to constantly reduce our costs in order to survive in the current market condition, we keep the investment in education, health and leisure oriented to employees and the community. We believe that education is a transformer instrument in the lives of our people. With that in mind, our father founded in 1996 the “Luis César de Siqueira Melo” School, which provides the children of our employees and the children of the community access to high quality education.

Quality is paramount. In this crop we have implemented a very strict quality control and food safety program oriented to achieve a whole new level and serve the most demanding markets as well as strengthen our relationship of trust with our customers. We must ensure that, at any circumstance, our quality will be kept at higher ground.

It is our challenge to always give our best to make customers aware of the social and environmental gains that our product promotes in the community, leaving a positive legacy and reaffirming our commitment to sustainability.

Approved by two of the world's most prestigious agencies in the segment, Fitch and Standard & Poor's, the ratings provided to Jalles Machado reflect the Company's strong business model, which relies on a mix of higher value-added products, agricul-tural performance benefited by assertive investments in renewal and processing of sugarcane plantations, in addition to self-suf-ficiency in the supply of sugar cane.

The factors listed here are translated into robust operating margins, with less volatile margins and operational generation of cash.

In this harvest, the sugar cane production units have suffered from the fall of productivity of the cane plan-tation due to low rainfall within the period, planting failures and incidence of pests and diseases, among other issues. Despite this context, Jalles Machado - the Otávio Lage Unit - has excelled nationally in the industry due to the productivity achieved in the last two years, being among the ten highest yields in Brazil, according to the mutual control report of the Centro de Tecnologia Canav-ieira (CTC). But how can it present these results being located in a Cerrado region, with high water deficit, soils that are shallow and favor the sugarcane harvesting? The answer involves a set of management strategies adopted efficient-ly over the years.• Crop rotation with soybeans and cat-bell; • Soil preparation, with use of variable rate of correctives and autopilot; • Crop treatment, using a variable rate herbicide, flow controllers and GPS; • Investments in Dams and Irrigation, using state of the art technologies; • Quality planting, using Autopilot, healthy plants and modern varieties adapted to the region and staff training; • Harvest at the appropriate speed of the machines, traffic control (trampling), gauge adjustment and transshipment and tire pressure monitoring; • Varietal management, using the most modern varieties of cane adapted to the region conditions;• Staff training and commitment, and from January to

Biological Control Biological control is a technique created to reduce the population of organisms considered pests, by natural means. A general example is the insertion, in a determined area, of natural predators of insects that cause economic damage to fields.

The Pest: Drill The drill is the main pest of the sugarcane. The young caterpillar feeds on the leaves and penetrates the softer parts of the stalk, drilling the cane and opening galler-ies, which serve as entrance for other microorganisms (bacte-ria, fungi, etc) that cause the rot (red rot).

Ways of Control One of the best ways to control the sugarcane drill is the Biological Control. In this case, the biological agent is a wasp - Cotesia flavipes attacking the drill still in the caterpil-lar phase. The wasp feeds of drill’s reserves (fat), weakening it and causing it to die.

Production of Cotesia As the Cotesia is a parasite of the caterpillar’s drill, the first step is to produce the pest (caterpillar drill) so the wasp (Cotesia) can feed itself and generate new individuals in the fields of cane sugar.

Relation of Release 1 cup contains 30 masses 1 mass contains 50 individuals of Cotesia 1 cup contains 1,500 individuals of Cotesia In one hectare of sugarcane are released 4 cups or 6,000 individuals of Cotesia. In 1 month are produced 23,000 cups for release in 5,800 hectares of sugarcane.

Advantages of Biological Control • There is no environmental impact • There is no danger to the health of rural workers • Does not cause death of other animals • Does not leave residues on food for human consumption • It is cheaper and more efficient

Biological Laboratory of Jalles Machado The Biological Control Laboratory at Jalles Machado was created in 1999 to control the sugarcane drill in organic sugarcane plantation (where you cannot use chemical insec-ticides). Currently, the Laboratory has the capacity to produce 35 million Cotesias per month and generates employment for 35 workers of the community. The Cotesia is primarily distributed in organic fields, but can also be released in conventional sugarcane areas with higher rates of infestation. This control, combined with other agricultural practices, has been successful over the years, and currently the organization considers itself in a "Comfortable" level (below 3%) in relation to the attack of this pest.

HEALTH

In October and November, the employees at Jalles Machado and Otávio Lage Unit attended lectures on the importance of the prevention of breast, cervical and prostate cancer as well as other themes related to women and men's health. The event was coordinated by the Department of Occupational Medicine, in partnership with SESI.

Learn more BREAST CANCER What is it? It is the most common cancer in Brazil-ian women. This disease causes an abnormal development of breast cells. They multiply repeatedly until they form a malignant tumor. Breast cancer is a disease that is curable if discovered early. Many women, however, lose precious time, because they are afraid of seeing a doctor and doing the exams. How can the disease be perceived? The breast cancer symptom that is more easily perceived by women is a lump in the breast, with or without pain. The symptom of breast cancer that is more easily perceived by women are the lumps in the breast, with or without pain. Remember that not every lump is breast cancer. So, it is important to consult a health care professional. How to prevent? Do self-examination once a month and mammography once a year, from 40 years old on. What else can women do to take care of herself? Have a healthy and balanced diet (with fruits and vegeta-bles), practice physical activities (any activity that moves your body) and do not smoke. Here are some tips that can help in the prevention of various diseases, including cancer.

CERVICAL CANCER What is it? It is a tumor that develops from changes in the cervix. These changes are called precursor lesions and

are curable in most cases. If untreated they can, after a few years, turn into cancer. What a woman can feel? When a woman has a precursor lesion and feels nothing, Only the smear screening exam can discover the change. The cancer at its early stage also does not provide signs. However, later on, there may appear vaginal discharge, bleeding and pain. What causes the disease? The cause is the persistent infection by the Human Papillomavirus, the HPV virus, which is transmitted through unprotected intercourses. How to prevent? Doing the smear screening exam - The Pap Test. This cancer takes many years to develop, and the changes in cells can be discovered from the start. So, if you do the screening test, detect the change early and follow the treatment properly, the chances of cure are 100%. Who should do the test Those who have or already had sexual intercourse, especially after 25 years old.

PROSTATE CANCER What is it? The prostate cancer is considered a cancer of the old age, since about three-quarters of cases in the world occur in man over the age of 65. It is a disease which usually presents very slow evolution (it takes about 15 years to reach 1 cm³), so that the mortality rate can be avoid-ed when the process is diagnosed and treated early. However, some of these tumors can grow quickly, spreading to other organs and can even lead to death. How to prevent? With the completion of the clinical examination, rectal examination (exam that faces the resis-tance from many men) combined with the result of a blood test (PSA*) in all men over 50 years. Fear and prejudice to the examination by urologist is still one of the main barriers to early diagnosis. The earlier prostate cancer is detected, the greater the chances of cure.

Organic production is one of Jalles Machado differentials. Itajá Organic Sugar is sold domestically and exported to many countries. Nowadays, the compa-ny intends to also invest in the manufacture of organic hydrated ethyl ethanol, often used in cosmetic formula-tion, especially perfumes and deodorants. Among the difficulties that the sugarcane industry faces, the power plant have been searching for new alternatives to reduce costs and add value. Jalles Machado intended to produce organic ethanol and this year, it manufactured the first batch. "The production process is differentiated, with all certificate inputs and the final product free from impurities. Quality control is also quite strict. The tests had excellent results, showing that with some invest-ments, we can produce organic ethanol on a large scale, "said the ethanol manufacturing manager at Jalles Machado, César Furlan. He also says that the good results were achieved due to the commitment of the Distillery team and also thanked the support given from other industri-al areas, the management and board of directors.
