Dwaraka Doss Goverdhan Doss Vaishnav College had its humble beginning in 1964, founded by the Sri Vallabhacharya Vidya Sabha with the objective of imparting education and empowering the youth. The college, over the five decades, has recorded phenomenal growth in terms of infrastructure, introduction of innovative, job oriented courses. I wish to state that ever since the college became autonomous the curriculum has been periodically redesigned and restructured to cater to the changing needs and requirements of the student community. I wish to express my sincere thanks to the staff members both teaching and non-teaching for their whole-hearted support. It is only through their concerted efforts that today, this institution, stands as an epitome of knowledge in Chennai, offering 59 different courses at the undergraduate, post graduate and research levels with a whopping number of 8,000 students. I would like to place on record that, the management during this year has awarded financial assistance to the tune of Rs.7,23…../- in order to encourage deserving students in academics and sports. Good Evening

Warm greetings to every one of you present here for the 53rd College

Day Celebrations.

Dwaraka Doss Goverdhan Doss Vaishnav College had its humble

beginning in 1964, founded by the Sri Vallabhacharya Vidya Sabha with

the objective of imparting education and empowering the youth. The

college, over the five decades, has recorded phenomenal growth in terms of

infrastructure, introduction of innovative, job oriented courses.

I wish to state that ever since the college became autonomous the

curriculum has been periodically redesigned and restructured to cater to

the changing needs and requirements of the student community.

I wish to express my sincere thanks to the staff members both

teaching and non-teaching for their whole-hearted support. It is only

through their concerted efforts that today, this institution, stands as an

epitome of knowledge in Chennai, offering 59 different courses at the

undergraduate, post graduate and research levels with a whopping number

of 8,000 students.

I would like to place on record that, the management during this

year has awarded financial assistance to the tune of Rs.7,23…../- in order

to encourage deserving students in academics and sports. As many as

______ students have been benefited from this gesture.

This academic year 2017-18, we are extremely happy to highlight the

Infrastructure

The lush green campus has undergone a major facelift this academic

year. The Visual Communication department moved from Goverdhan

Block to Ganga Block with state of the art facilities.

The foundation language departments and B.A. English and Tamizh

have moved to Bhasha Sangam (the old admin block) after the

renovation of the block.

All the auditoriums in the college have been renovated.

The AICTE core team visited the MBA block for inspection to grant

continuation of affiliation.

RETIREMENT (File Shots)

Three of our staff members are retiring this academic year.

Dr. A B Sundarvadivelu, Head, Department of Commerce , Dr. R

Balasubramaniyan, Head, Department of Economics and Mr. S Babu,

Technical faculty, Department of Visual Communication retire this

academic year.

We thank the retiring staff for their relentless service to the student

community and to the college.

A Colloquy on Media and Social Responsibility was conducted at the

National level. Eminent media personalities and academicians across

the country were a part of this colloquy.

NME-ICT project of MHRD

Under National Mission on Education through Information and

Communication and Technology (NME-ICT) project , Ministry of

Human Resource Development (MHRD), Govt. of India,

Department of Physics completed a project to prepare e-content

learning material for B.Sc.(H) Electronics laboratory course of

Delhi University .

Our college has been selected for Project on Science and Maths

under Rastriya Aviskar Abhyan (RAA), MHRD for the year 2017 –

2018 under visit to Higher Educational Institutions.

Department of Biotechnology, Ministry of Science & Technology,

Govt. of India has approved and granted funding of 4Lakhs to her

project proposal Use of Foldscope as a Educational and Training

tool, for the year 2018-19. This is a project under the collaboration

of Govt. of India with Prakash Labs of Stanford University, USA.

The Founder of Pie Mathematics Association and Associate Professor of

Mathematics at D.G. Vaishnav College, Chennai, Dr. R. Sivaraman wrote

a English Book titled ―Cracking Crimes : Enterprising Mathematical

Conundrums‖.

On the occasion of the International Teacher‘s Day , the IQAC of the

college organised a one-day workshop on research methodology for

the faculty members and research scholars. As the theme of the

workshop, ―Seeking new knowledge(s) beyond frontiers” suggests,

the objective in organising such an event was to provide an

opportunity for our faculty members to equip themselves with

knowledge of current trends in research and to redefine their scope

of research to suit the contemporary times.

Vaishnav Vaibhav, a souvenier was released on World Youth Day.

VAISHNAV BAZAAR, first of its kind was held in the campus. The

bazaar had a total of 100 stalls and the products on sale were made by the

students showcasing their entrepreneurial skills.

Bridge Course

The department began the academic year the bridge

course for I year students.

Winning Pitch

The department conducted a PowerPoint

presentation competition, Winning Pitch, for the II

year undergraduate students, aimed at helping the

students hone their communication and

presentation skills, one of the important

prerequisites to be a part of the corporate world

today.

Skills to Excel

The department organised Skills to Excel, a soft

skills workshop for the postgraduate students,

keeping in mind the need for our students to

develop their communication abilities and

leadership skills so that they can ace interviews.

―Good writing is clear thinking made visible‖, said

Bill Wheeler, a renowned painter. To help the future

generation enunciate their thoughts clearly,

organised an Essay Writing Competition.

To provide an opportunity to voice out their unique

thoughts and perspectives, an Oratorical

Competition, echoing the words of Walter

Isaacson, ―Innovation requires articulation‖ was

organised.

The inauguration of the Literary Debating Society

and a Workshop on Theatre was conducted

wherein Mr. V. Balakrishnan, actor and director of

‗Theatre Nisha‘ served as the resource person.

Tamil A monthly literary meeting called ―IlakkiyaInbam‖

was conducted by the tamil department.

The Mahakavibarathy festival was organized by the

tamil department for the first time where the

students recited the poems and text of Barathiyar.

“PaavaiVizha” a discourse on Paavai rituals and

studentis reciting 30 Thirupavai Song was organised

The 1000th birthday celebrations was marked by

“PanmuganokkilRamanujar”, A national seminar,

Book release function of

“UlagaiuivikkavandhaRamanujar” by

S.Gokulaachari.

“MuthamizhVizha” was conducted .

The Tamil Department, Thirukailaaya Parambarai

Tharumai Aadheenam and the department of Saiva

Sidhaantha, University of Madras collectively

organized a 4 day International Conference on Saiva

Sidhantha”.

Hindi Workshops were organized on the theme

“ Importance of Hindi for Employment” and “

Digital Banking” by the department.

Darpan, intercollegiate academic and cultural

fest was organized by the department.

French French Department had organised a French

Cultural Fest ― Les Étoiles -18‖, for the first time in

our college.

Economics

‗Farm Fest 2018 was organized in order to portray

our Traditional Culture and to instill the value of

agriculture among the student community.

A two day International Conference on India and

Global Economy –Issues and Challenges was

organized by the department.

A few Endowment lectures were held in the

department on various aspects of Economics.

A Thematic Panel Discussion on Prospects, Issues

and Challenges on India and Global Economy was

held.

Commerce Career guidance program by Mr. Kalyana

Subramanian to the final year students were given

on the various career opportunities in the field of

commerce and technology.

Insight on the shipping and logistics industry was

presented. Actual facts regarding the growth of

logistics industries compared to the growth of GDP

were shared with the students of the 2nd year

B.Com.

GST TALK - A workshop on Goods and Service Tax

was conducted on 4th and 5th of December for the

benefit of faculty and Post Graduate and Research

Scholars of Business Studies and Economics.

An inter-department debate competition on ―Ethics

VS Profit – Essential in a Business environment‖.

Jamboree - Tips and tricks to clear and ace in the

various MBA entrance exams – CAT, XAT, GMAT,

SNAP etc were presented.

An inter-collegiate quiz, the first of its edition,

inQUIZitive was conducted .

BCOM General Association – ‗Prathiba Sangam‟

hosted their inter-collegiate business fest – Pragati

2K18, the first of its kind.

The Post Graduate and Research Department of

Commerce had arranged an Industrial Visit to

Schwing Stetter, IIrungattukottai.

Secretaryship

The Department of Corporate Secretaryship in

association with SIRC of the ICSI has organized a

seminar on ―Empowering Teachers to Prepare

Professionals of Tomorrow‖ for the Commerce

faculties of Colleges.

A Students Mega Career Awareness Programme

under the title ―Developing and Grooming Young

Students of India‖ with The Institute of Company

Secretaries of India as Knowledge Partners and

Sponsorers was organized.

Chemistry D.G. Vaishnav Chemical society was inaugurated by

Dr. B.G. Goswami, General Manager (Chemistry),

and Head, Regional Geoscience Laboratory, ONGC,

& Mr. P.K. Nag, AGM, Chemistry lab,

ONGC, Chennai. The chief guest released the

newsletter ―Oganesson‖ and gave a lecture on, ―Role

of Geochemistry in petroleum exploration‖.

The second edition of CHEM BATTLE, ―An

intradepartmental talent search contest‖ was held.

An inter-collegiate two days Lecture Workshop on

CSIR-JRF NET Examination was held.

The Annual Inter-Collegiate Cultural Programme

Rasayanotsav was organized.

A special lecture on Basic and Advanced

Stereochemistry by Dr. P.S. Kalsi, Professor of

Eminence, Shoolini University of Biotechnology and

Management Science was held.

The Department of Chemistry in collaboration with

SACSE, IGCAR conducted a one day

'Interdepartmental workshop on Basic Sciences'

under the support of DBT Star College Scheme.

As a part of DBT Star College Scheme, The

DBT Scientist of the month

Department of Physics organized a lecture by

Dr. S. V. Eswaran, Emeritus Scientist,

Academy of Scientific and Innovative

Research, AcSIR, New Delhi. It was an

interactive lecture focusing on

interdisciplinary research and its multiple

applications.

Inspired by this talk a Scientific research

paper the topic WHY Grasshoppers don‟t

feed on spinach has been translated into

TAMIL by the students which will soon be

the students of P.G.Dept of computer science.

The department has initiated a spoken tutorial

programme with IIT Mumbai.

The orientation program was held to enrich the

parents about the M.Sc course.

conducted placement brochure launch in three

print Version, Web version and Mobile Application

version.

As a part of our curriculum the department had

organized an educational trip to enrich the practical

insight to the learning inside the class room.

Outbound Training for enhancing organizational

planned to Yercaud from 1 st September 2017 to 4

th September 2017.

COMBAT- AN INTERCOLLEGIATE FEST was

Republic day camp (New Delhi): L/CPL V.Gopi and G.Cindia from

second year computer science and Physics respectively to participate in the

Republic Day camp, New Delhi (Jan 2018) .

36TH CADOFEST , a three day - intercollegiate NCC competition which is

aimed at moulding the NCC cadets.

NSS

The National Service Scheme, time and again have proved their might in

training students on social welfare serving the society without any

prejudice through its programmes:

NSS units organized “INTERNATIONAL YOGA DAY” in

association with “ISHA FOUNDATION”

AIDS Awareness Programme was organized by our NSS units in

association with International alliance for prevention of AIDS (IAPA)

exclusively for the final year UG students of our College.

One day NSS Orientation Programme was organized by our NSS unit.

100 NSS Volunteers has participated in Human Chain in front of

D.G. Vaishnav College “Rally for Rivers” Awareness for protecting

rivers organized by Isha foundation.

2nd Mega Blood Donation Camp was conducted by our NSS Unit and

Lions Club Anna Nagar at SRG Auditorium. 1972 units of blood were

donated at this Blood Camp.

Rural Development Special Camp organized by our NSS units at

Koladi Village, Tiruverkadu.

The Physical Education department of our college conducted various

inter-department Sports activities in both indoor and outdoor games. The

AWARDS AND ACHIEVEMENTS

Many laurels were won by the staff and students of the college. To highlight

the significant few :

Dr. T S Prema was awarded the Woman Achiever Award by Women

wing, TMC and ―Aanmega Sevai Chemmal‖ by South Indian

Academy of Arts &Literature.

The Documentary on " Hindu Value System " made by the

department of Visual Communication won the Best Documentary in

the " Hindu Spiritual and Service fair" held at Gurunanak College.

Dr. P Umapathy was awarded the ―Bharat Ratna Dr. A. P. J. Abdul

Kalam – Visionary of India 2020 Award‖ from AMN Global Groups

and the Bharat Rathna Dr.APJ.Abdul Kalam Gold Medal Award from

honourable justice K.Samidurai, Madras high court for his individual

achievement and National Economic Growth.

Dr. P Umapathy received Doctor of letters (D.lit) from Dr.

Venkatraman Sundhar Chancellor, International Economics

University for SAARC Countries for the commendable contribution in

the field of higher education on 5th November 2017 at Madurai.

Dr. P. Vidya, Head of the Department, received Excellence Teaching

in Higher Education Award from Arunai International Research

Foundation.

Dr. P Umapathy received the Republic Day Achiever Award 2018 for

the best faculty from Dr. C. Sylendra Babu ADGP Railways organized

by Integrated Intelligent Research ( IIR ) at Loyola College.

Dr.D.Uthra has been appointed as a subject expert for the

construction of new syllabus for school education and involved in

revision of curriculum, syllabus and textbooks by SCERT State

Council of Educational Research and Training, Tamilnadu.

The Sankara Nethralaya Academy honoured Dr. D Uthra with a

citation in appreciation and recognition of the scholastic services

imparting academic knowledge and skills to students to excel in life

Dr.D.Uthra was awarded prize for the best oral presentation at

the First Annual Convention of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry Regional

Council of Indian Association of Physics Teachers (IAPT - RC13) held

at IIT Madras, Chennai. and also presented Bharat Ratna C.

Dr. V Renganayaki was awarded Dr.V.S.Kulandaisamy trust and

Selvi Janaki Trust Prize for popularising Science in Tamil.

Dr. R. UMA received BESTPAPER AWARD in the International

Conference on Biotechnology and biological sciences BIOSPECTRUM

2017entitled ―Cytotoxicity and apoptosis of human colon

carcinoma cell (HT29 cells) treated with methanolic extract of

Chlorococcum humicola‟‟ organized by the University of

Chennai on International Women’s Day

Two students ,B.Ilamparithi and S.Bavadharini from III B.Sc. were

selected and attended a 3-week Internship program at UGC-CSR-

DAE, Indore, Madhya Pradesh and worked in Low temperature Lab

from 5 June - 23rdJune, 2017.

K.Shravan of III B.Sc. Physics has been selected for the Winter

School on Radio Astronomy to be conducted in Pune from 18th –

26th December, 2017 as a collaboration between Tata Institute of

Fundamental Research ,TIFR and Radio Astronomy School, Pune.

Twenty two of our III B.Sc. Physics students attended a training

programme on Remote sensing and GIS sponsored by ISRO

organized by AMET University, Chennai from 24-30, Nov, 2017.

Bhavani, ( 2014-17 batch) has published her Tamil translation work

of an award winning story Librarian of Basra in archives.org

Vennila, ( 2014-17 batch) has co-authored her Tamil translation

work of an award winning story My Feet are the Wheel Chair and

published in archives.org.

Sanjay Nair , I BSc. Visual Communications, had secured the first

place in Photography in ―Forla Fest‘17‖, Loyola College.

L/CPL G.Cindia Participated in the prestigious Rajpath March and

she has saluted the President of India on the Rajpath ground.

R.Kaviyarasan (I M.Sc) is being selected for Summer Research

Fellowship programme in Indian Academy of Sciences (IASC) at

INCASR Institute, R.Abinaya (I M.Sc) is being selected for IITM

Summer Fellowship Programme

MOMENTS OF PRIDE

The Kumbhabhishekam of the college temple was conducted.

Gokulashtami was celebrated with a lot of zest in the campus.

„Acharya Devo Bhava‟- Felicitation of faculty having completed 25

years in our college.

Independence Day and Republic Day was celebrated respecting the

significance of both.

―Martyr‟s Day‖-70thGandhiji‘s Death Anniversary

International Woman‟s Day was celebrated.

V-FEST – An Inter-Department Academic & Cultural Competitions

for I UG students was conducted by the department of English.

The second edition of the college's largest interdepartmental event,

Artistics, was held.

Hostel Day was celebrated.

These were the events and activities organised by our college during the

academic year 2017-2018—something that gives us a sense of achievement

and pride.

SAD MOMENTS

We regret to inform this august body the demise of Shri Madanlal

Gupta, a member of Sri Vallabhacharya Vidya Sabha. We pray to the

almighty for their souls to rest in peace.

EXPRESSING GRATITUDE

The Vaishnav team whole-heartedly expresses its gratitude to His

Holiness Vagdhishraiji Mahoday for having accepted our invitation, within

a short notice. We are happy to have our Guruji in our midst.

I take this opportunity to express my sincere thanks and deep sense

of gratitude to all those who were there with me in different capacities as

mentors, leaders, colleagues, students and friends for their unstinted

support, co-operation and constant encouragement.

With great respect I, on behalf of my colleagues and students, record

our deep sense of indebtedness to the ever friendly members of the

management, Governing Body of the College and Shri Vallabacharya Vidya

Sabha in general and to our beloved secretary, Shri. Ashok Kumar

Mundhraji, in particular, for being instrumental in motivating this

institution as a whole to stand on par with the best. D G Vaishnav College

is distinct from others in CLASS, PERFORMANCE and ACHIEVEMENT as a
