JAGUAR NEWSDID YOUKNOW?Steve McQueen was a racing driver as much as he was an actor, and his knowledge of the automotive world probably included thousands of mostly unknown Jaguar facts. He loved the cars enough to buy one of the 16 XKSS models and kept it for 10 years. During that period, the car earned him two driving bans, and perhaps to protect his driving record he finally sold it. That decision might have saved him his licence, but he seemed to instantly regret it. He quickly bought it back and kept the rare Jaguar until he died.

In the 1953 Le Mans 24 hour race, Jaguar

vehicles placed first, second, and fourth.

In honourable British fashion, the company

sent a telegram to Queen Elizabeth II in

her coronation year to dedicate its victory to

her. She replied with congratulations.

JAGUAR LAND ROVER VALUES INDEPENDENT OPINION FOCUS ON Jaguar XE under the skin

At Jaguar Land Rover, we greatly value the opinions of journalists world-wide as their musings help immeasurably in fashioning public opinion just as they may cause introspection within the company should their comments contain negative overtones.

In the sub-Sahara Africa context, it’s fair to say that Jaguar Land Rover goes to greater lengths than most to expose journalists to corporate activities as well as to product.

In the Land Rover March newsletter, you will find a detailed independent report on Land Rover’s support of the Born Free Foundation in Kenya. It is heartening to receive confirmation that this project is indeed achieving all the objectives we set ourselves in terms of improving the interaction of the local community with wildlife.

Further from home, the all-new Jaguar XE is receiving the plaudits of hardened motoring journalists whose early findings augur well for this model when it comes to our region in the latter part of 2015.

Auto Express, Britain’s biggest-selling weekly car magazine awarded the XE a five-star rating and made this highly significant comment within the report: “Jaguar has a fine reputation for reliability these days, coming an excellent second (and top of all premium makes) in the manufacturer rankings of our annual Driver Power survey.”

Meanwhile, rival title Autocar had this to say about the new Land Rover Discovery Sport which is not too far away from release in the SSA market: “The Disco Sport’s fine combination of beauty, versatility and good driving characteristics looks like bringing a new sophistication to this class...”

We look forward to exposing local journalists to our exciting new product range and bringing you the full story on some of the year’s most exciting releases.

Nigel Clarke Operations Director Jaguar Land Rover sub-Sahara Africa

The new Jaguar XE’s aluminium-intensive monocoque structure is made from a lightweight, high-strength aluminum sheet with a thickness of 1.1mm, down from 1.5mm, which helped reduce the car’s weight by 27 percent without sacrificing strength or durability.

The XE is also the most aerodynamic model in the Jaguar’s history, with a drag coefficient of 0.26cd. These aspects help XE variants with the new 2.0-litre diesel achieve CO

2 emissions as low as 99 grams per kilometer.

The XE is the first Jaguar to use an electric power steering system supplied by ZF Friedrichshafen. A benefit of Jaguar switching from a traditional hydraulic power steering system to electric is that, according to the company, CO

2 emissions are reduced by 3 percent on gasoline models and

2 percent on diesels.

The XE is the first model to be assembled on the carmaker’s new modular architecture. Assembly began in December 2014 at Jaguar’s factory in Solihull, central England. Jaguar will also make the XE in China. Global XE output is expected to peak at more than 58,000 units in 2018, according to an IHS Automotive forecast.

Pushing the Jaguar XE ‘s acclaimed technology and economical credentials to the limit over 1200km, the journey ends with an outstanding fuel economy figure of 65mpg despite tough winter driving conditions and the car being fitted with winter tyres.

Speaking about his XE road trip, Idris Elba commented:

“I had a great time driving the Jaguar XE in some pretty bad weather conditions - the highlight for me was hammering it round Spa with the legendary Martin Brundle.

“The car was a real head turner and I made sure I pushed it hard all the way to Berlin - so the most surprising thing was the efficiency, averaging 3.6l/100km. I also loved the in-car tech as I’m a big fan of gadgets, and the XE was fully loaded in that respect too - I even planned my DJ set list as I drove.

“I’ve long been a fan of Jaguar and its incredible sporting heritage. I like to push what I do and explore different areas of my expertise and that’s why this film project with Jaguar really appealed.”

Fiona Pargeter Global Director of Public Relations for Jaguar Land Rover said:

“We were very keen to get a car fan like Idris behind the wheel of the new Jaguar XE to prove the fuel economy credentials and be one of the first to test the in-car tech over a long drive. The journey took him through some very challenging winter weather conditions in Europe, on winter tyres on various road types to showcase this is a real world car, delivering real world results.”

Along the route, Idris stopped at F1 race circuit in Spa, Belgium where he met with formula one racing legend Martin Brundle for high speed dynamic driving in the Jaguar XE S 3.0-litre petrol 340PS.

1200 km and three days later, the film documents Idris arriving at an exclusive Jaguar party at Berlin’s Umspannwerk to celebrate the Berlin launch of the XE, where he skilfully delivered the sports saloon directly onto the stage in front of 200 excitable VIP guests. He later treated the party to a very special DJ set.

IDRIS ELBA PROVES THE JAGUAR XE IS AS EFFICIENT AS IT IS SPORTY WITH EPIC ROAD TRIP

The XE is powered by a range of four-and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines offering a blend of performance, refinement and efficiency from 99g/km CO2 to 250km/h.

From smartphone apps and Wi-Fi to premium audio systems developed with world-renowned experts Meridian - the new XE offers a suite of technologies designed to keep you informed and entertained, making every journey even more of an experience.

Jaguar’s XF is the first model to receive a sportier look and feel courtesy of a new R-Sport brand. While the company’s performance models have long been marketed under the “R” banner, Jaguar’s new R-Sport badge extends the brand’s performance DNA – a first in the XF range.

The R bloodline runs deep through the iconic British brand, not least across the XF range that includes XFR and mighty XFR-S derivatives. The combination of cutting edge technology, handling and intelligent performance allows drivers of R models to benefit from Jaguar’s strong performance heritage in a seductive styling package of luxury features.

As such, the new XF R-Sport makes the Jaguar R dream a little more attainable. The newcomer boasts a number of exterior cosmetic upgrades that lend it a bit more road presence. These include a rear decklid spoiler, a sport bumper, and R-style side sills. Rounding off the sportier exterior are a set of 18-inch Lyra wheels.

Buyers can also specify the XF R-Sport with the optional Black Pack, which includes gloss black surrounds for the windows and bootlid finisher, along with a black grille set inside a black chrome surround, for an even sportier look.

Equipped with Jaguar’s 3.0-litre V6 supercharged petrol engine, with outputs of 250kW and 450Nm, the new XF R-Sport also offers drivers performance and driving enjoyment to match its looks.

“We wanted to give our customers an XF model that strikes the right balance between superb comfort and sport,” said Janico Dannhauser, Brand Manager at Jaguar Land Rover South Africa. “The XF R-Sport does just that. Our 3.0-litre V6

There are only a handful of car companies that can boast models capable of 300km/h in their line-ups. Jaguar is one, harnessing the brand’s expertise in pioneering the use of lightweight materials and powerful, supercharged engines, to consolidate its performance car legacy.

Speed is part of the fundamental part of the human hunger for pushing the envelope; to run faster, climb higher, dive deeper, cycle harder, to make the automobile quicker. This same drive has constantly spearheaded the development of the motorcar – and been a core part of Jaguar’s DNA.

As an Innovation Partner in the Bloodhound Supersonic Car (SSC) project, Jaguar is also contributing its expertise to that team’s efforts, which will potentially see a land-based vehicle speed past the 1 000-mile-per-hour (1 610km/h) mark, when Sir Andy Green makes his record attempts later this year and next.

Not only will Jaguar’s technical mastery be tapped to aid in the design of the cockpit that will become Green’s supersonic home, its experts will also lend their knowledge to assist in fine-tuning the supersonic car’s electric, hydraulic, engine control, and safety systems.

At Bloodhound’s heart will beat one of Jaguar’s finest: a 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine, taken from the F-TYPE R doing duty as a fuel pump. Hooked up directly to the Bloodhound’s high test peroxide (HTP) fuel tank, it will use its 400-plus kilowatts to deliver rocket fuel at a rate of 40 litres per second.

But Jaguar’s love affair with land speed record attempts isn’t a newfound love. The company’s involvement dates back to the late 1940s, when co-founder Sir William Lyons insisted on participating in top-speed runs on Belgium’s famous Jabbeke highway.

Many British manufacturers could not resist the allure of being in the record books, and in 1949 Lyons sent a Jaguar XK120 – so named for its 120 miles per hour (193km/h) top speed – to

SPEED IS IN JAGUAR’S BLOOD

Belgium for a top-speed run. With test driver Ron Sutton at the wheel, the XK120 achieved a maximum speed of 132mph, or 213.4km/h, earning the car the title of the fastest production car in the world. In the four years that followed the XK120 set another string of distance and speed-over-distance records at the hands of a number of notable drivers, including Sir Stirling Moss.

In 1953 the Jabbeke highway once again became the site for a record attempt. This time, with Sir Norman Dewis driving a specially-prepared XK120 featuring a number of aerodynamic modifications, including a canopy from a fighter aircraft, a speed of 277.5km/h was reached over the flying mile – setting a new world land speed record.

After the XK120’s many succesful speed record attempts, as well as a 24 Hours of Le Mans victory under its belt, Jaguar continued demonstrating its British engineering prowess with the C- and D-Type race cars. These proved to be formidable on track, thanks to the innovative use of aluminium. They were light enough to remain nimble through the corners, while aerodynamics and powerful engines endowed them with ample speed on the straightaways.

The C-Type famously became the first vehicle to complete Le Mans at an average speed of more than 100mph (161km/h), recording a speed of 170km/h over the 24 hour period. Meanwhile, the Jaguar D-Type, which pioneered a monocoque chassis design, conquered the French race three times in succession. Capable of reaching significantly higher top speeds on the renowned Mulsanne Straight it managed to see off stiff competition from Ferrari, despite being equipped with a smaller capacity powerplant.

Jaguar’s continued participation in Le Mans brought it another victory in 1988, when the Jaguar XJR-9 sports-prototype race car ended Porsche’s reign of the world’s biggest motorsport event – unsurprising given the 7.0-litre V12 racer’s ability to reach speeds in excess of 390km/h. Two years later its successor, the Jaguar XJR-12, finished in first and second position. Even with that year’s introduction of chicanes on the Mulsanne straight, in an effort to reduce top speeds, it still blitzed the traps at speeds exceeding 350km/h.

The two contemporary Le Mans racers also served as inspiration for a roadgoing supercar: the Jaguar XJ220. As with its XK120 forebear, the XJ220 was named for its claimed top speed. Fitted with a 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 engine, the limited-edition supercar – only 275 were produced – officially became the fastest production car in the world, in 1992, when it was driven to a maximum speed of 343km/h.

With a history of speed in the record books, a more-than-capable modern model line-up, and now direct input into humanity’s most ambitious land speed record attempt to date, Jaguar will continue to put British engineering and ingenuity in the limelight. Finally there will be an answer to the question: who is fastest of them all?

• Jaguar and Britain boast a storied history of high-speed motoring• Quest for speed has led to innovations in safety, aerodynamics, and

lightweight aluminium construction• As technical partner for Bloodhound SSC, Jaguar technology will

contribute to the 1 610km/h land speed record attempt

JAGUAR F-TYPE R COUPÉ SETS SOUTH AFRICAN LAND SPEED RECORD

• F-TYPE R Coupé breaks 13-year-old production vehicle land speed record

• Top speed in excess of 300km/h was reached on Upington runway

• Record illustrates Jaguar’s performance and safety innovation

The Jaguar F-TYPE R Coupé is officially* the fastest production vehicle in South Africa. On 28 February 2015, at the Upington Airport, in the Northern Cape, a small group of Jaguar employees gathered to watch the 405kW supercharged V8 coupé being driven into the record books.

The event was the culmination of just over six weeks of planning, and saw Jaguar tapping into its heritage; recalling the 40s and 50s, when it famously set numerous European land speed records with the XK120.

“Not only do we say that racing is in our blood – we go out there and prove it,” said Richard Gouverneur, Managing Director of Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) South Africa and sub-Sahara Africa. “Aside from being inspired by our history of racing and land speed records, we also wanted to show off the innovation, performance and safety of our vehicles. A car that’s capable of reaching 300km/h safely is many times safer at legal and safe speeds.”

At the hands of Dawie Olivier, National Aftersales Manager at JLR – and racer with more than two decades of rallying and circuit racing experience – the F-TYPE R Coupé reached speeds in excess of 300km/h on the 4 900 metre runway at Upington Airport.

For the record to be official, two runs have to be completed in both directions while timekeeping officials from Motorsport South Africa measure speed over a one kilometre distance. On the uphill section of the F-TYPE’S record-setting

run it achieved a speed of 288.33km/h, while the complementing downhill run saw it crack the magical 300km/h mark with an officially-measured speed of 301.03km/h. The land speed record comprises the average of the two runs, and now sits at 294.68km/h – besting the previous record of 287.63km/h set in 2002, with Mike Griffiths behind the wheel of a Porsche 911 GT2.

“The F-TYPE R Coupé is limited to 300km/h, but we chose not to remove the speed limiter, even though the regulations make provision for us to legally do so. The car that we used is exactly as customers can buy it off the showroom floor,” said Gouverneur. “Ultimately, we ran out of space to go even faster – however this was the safest venue to illustrate the potential of this vehicle.”

Aside from being inspired by our history of racing and land speed records, we also wanted to show off the innovation, performance and safety of our vehicles.”

JAGUAR LAND ROVER REPORTS JANUARY SALES PERFORMANCE

Jaguar Land Rover, the UK’s leading manufacturer of premium luxury vehicles retailed 37,137 vehicles in the month of January, compared to 39,106 vehicles sold in January 2014. The reduction is more than explained by the sales run out of the Land Rover Freelander model while retails of the new Land Rover Discovery Sport will start this month in some markets.

Land Rover delivered 31,632 vehicles in January, down 474 units or 1%. Excluding Freelander, Land Rover retail sales were up 10% with sales up for Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, Range Rover Evoque and Land Rover Discovery models. Jaguar retailed 5,505 vehicles, down 1,495 units in advance of the launch of the new Jaguar XE and other new forthcoming Jaguar products.

Commenting on the month, Andy Goss, Jaguar Land Rover Group Sales Operations Director said: “Following the strongest year of sales in our history, 2015 will be another year of growth for Jaguar Land Rover, with 12 significant new product actions planned. There is great customer anticipation as we gear up for the introduction of the Jaguar XE and the Land Rover Discovery Sport in the spring.”
