The magazine is called Rocksound

The magazine is called Rocksound

• I chose this name as it suits my chosen target audience, this being fans of hardcore music aged 16-25 mainly males. I chose this genre as I don’t feel it is represented fairly in typical pieces of media, in modern day magazines and music videos.

About the genre of the magazine.

About the genre of the magazine.

• As mentioned in the previous slide the genre chosen is “Hardcore” this is aimed at typical fans aged 16-25, I looked at band merchandise to gain some insight, as of which fonts and style is used to sell the merchandise to the fans.

• I tried to avoid using tattoo fonts even though they prove popular to hardcore fans, I didn’t believe this would work to the full effect on a magazine format, so I used graffiti fonts to sustain some interest in the fonts and colours.

• Also I added some features which I have never seen in “metal” magazines, this was the gear review which is a small section which reviews the newest and best hardware and software for musicians. The other factor I involved was the alternative girls section, as there is only one other magazine which features alternative models.

Representing the audience.

Representing the audience.

• The obvious choice was to attempt to represent hardcore fans, I achieved this by maintaining a style throughout the magazine using the “varsity” font associated with hardcore fans, as seen on many items of merchandise.

• Costume was used to a great advantage, by using 59/50 hats flannel shirts, hoodies skinny jeans etc. overall this created the “hardcore” look, this is as you would see haredcore fans going to see there favourite bands

• The gestures in the top picture I believe represent hardcore quite well, I have seen many pictures by hardcore fans looking very similar.

Publishers.Publishers.• The most likely choice of publisher would be a French company

called editions freeway they also publish successful “underground” magazine titled “ROCKSOUND” the current publisher has confirmed they want to broaden the horizon and allow more underground bands to be discovered through this type of media, which my magazine would allow as “hardcore” is quite unheard of at the moment, but with big bands on the rise very quickly such as “Parkway Drive” and “Bring Me The Horizon Hardcore is set to be the next big thing.

• Combined with new ideas, such as the gear reviews and alternative female model section this product would be an easy seller on the shelf being the first and only choice for hardcore fans.

Audience.Audience.• The audience I was typically going for is males aged 16-25

white, British/American working class who are typical fans of Metalcore bands and of course Hardcore fans, the fans of hardcore tend to lead an energetic lifestyle and take on extreme sports such as skateboarding and BMX.

• This audience is ideal to target as the only media for hardcore bands is currently only available on the internet, so this would be the first and only choice for a large fanbase, full of loyal fans to hardcore and fans who generally appreciate music in all forms.

• I don’t think my magazine will have a secondary audience it is pretty much aimed at the hardcore fans, and I don’t think I would adapt it to fit anyone else’s needs

How I attracted my audience.

How I attracted my audience.

• The audience I targeted expects loud colours and unexpected crazy things to happen all the time regarding music, they are always waiting for the next big thing to happen.

• I used the title “Hardsound” as it already builds on already successful names without being too close to the original names but its enough for people to realize what my magazine is about before they even purchase it

• Imagery throughout the magazine is the happy go lucky or “I don’t care” look which is popular in photography modeled by hardcore fans.

• The same varsity hardcore font is used a number of times as this proves very popular

• The articles on the front are fairly basic covering gear reviews and interviews with bands examples are as followed.

Audience.Audience.• Again the style was kept in the contents page also using similar

fonts to the varsity hardcore font.• I decided to keep things to the point and kept everything central

on the contents page adding small games to the magazine.• Some fonts of bigger stories are highlighted and made bold• I used pictures of friends up along the top of the contents block,

this would be famous band members people would recognize, but of course I cannot use real band members

Double page.Double page.• The double page interview keeps the original theme with the

varsity font taking up a large proportion of the page, and also a large picture of band member Matt with his acoustic guitar on the right hand side.

• You will notice some quotations which strike me as interesting are in bold and are therefore noticed first.

• The image of Matt is cropped from a picture of the full band but I only liked how Matt appeared on it, I also had the problem with the amount of space I needed for my interview as well as a full size picture of the band, or band member.

• To the eye I believe my interview looks appealing as it is striking in terms of colour and text.

Technology.Technology.• The technology I have used has frustrated me a tad, however

after getting to grips with using Photoshop and In design, my project started to take shape. I would personally use a more up to date version of Photoshop and try to avoid using in design completely.

• Using my camera was no problem I used a canon DSLR to capture my images.

• Edited the images using Photoshop• And uploaded them onto my project• Overall I have learnt how to use different software, there are a

few things I could have done better. For example I noticed the quality of the magazine gets better as it goes on, I wish I could have gone back to design my front cover all over again, as it could be so much more appealing if I spent more time on it
