I hail assembled the army at Zevis, and its environs; so as to be able to iepair to any quarter where the enemy might attempt a passage. This assemblage of. force gave rise to serious apprehensions respecting my real designs. 1 ordered a false' attack to be made on my right, and ai the same time gave 'orders that an appearance of hostile move-ment should He made on my left; my inten-tion was to.distiact the enemy by those vari-ous movements, and the event his amply justified my expectation. The first object to beaccompiished was to throw down the walls that barricaded the middle of the bridge, which was effected by a device of a very daiing nature. The two cuts that the Aus-trians had made were ren'deted passable by means of planks, and immediately 24 com-panies of light troops,: selected fiom the di-visions -of GA KP.AKKF, and D O M E S M E ,

V I E N N A , O C T . 2 0 . Yesterday our Court received intelligence

from our Grand Army in Suabia, under the command of the Archduke FERDINAND, ot a disagreeable nature, contrary to expec-tation, This intelligence was brought over by Major FLACHENBERG, belonging to the General Staff of the Army, and made public most expeditiously last night in a Court Gazette Extraordinary.

t. Actional I'Vertlngett, the 8th Oct. under the com-mand of Field Marshal Baron AUFEENBHRG. ", On the evening of the 7th October,

Field Maishal Lieutenant Baron AUFFEN-BERG w.as detached froih Guntzburgh to Wertingeh, with six battalions of grena-diers, three battalions of fusile.ers, two squa-drons of cuirassiers, of the Duke ALBERT'S regiment, and two squadrons of' light horse of Latour, to frustrate the enemy's inten tions, who had passed the Danube neat" Donauwerth. On the folio Wing day, in the forenoon, the enemy made several motions, whicfr seemed'to threaten our division at Wertingcn, and made us suspect lhat they were advancing to attack the same with a considerable foi ee. As they developed them selves more and riiore, and especially.by the match of some strong columns towards Zunimershatisen, and to the.road of Guntz-buigli, tlieir intention's became more arid more, and inure evident: at, last the battalions of infant iy, which'-stood at Wertingen., at a great distance from the arniy, .wete.attacked vi-id'i. .t he, gi;c;uest impetuokiiy by a more meious'. cuv-.alry of the- enemy ; and, not-•withstanding the gallantry shewn by ihe re-peated' exertions of our two divisions ol • cavalry, to support the irifai)try> they were too weak to -w ithstand such' -a toite. The ,:

The Field Marshal Lieutenant AUK FEN BERG was missed the-next day, and supposed. to be taken pri soner."

S. Action of Guntzburgh, the qtk of October, be-tween the Imperial and Royal Army, eini the 6th

On the 9th the army encamped near Gunts-burgh, leaning irs righ; upon the village of

No sooner v as the camp ol Guntzburgh formed, but lire corps hnder General D'As PRE s- was com-'pelled to vet teat to the othei side of the Da-nube, with some loss, and the' said G'eneial himself became missing on the Occasion. Thereupon the.enemy, under the Command of Marshal NEV , advanced with a cons;• dciabla force to the biidges of - the Danube, attempted to pats over'them;, and to drive . our troops from the bank; During the ' whole altemoon their ex'eitions were fiuit-less.: but:, towards the evening, a' strong column of the eriemy succeeded .iri .over*. powering the bridige of the highway near Guntzbuigh, and entered that to|<-n. fits R. Highness the Archduke C.H A R r.r.s, • Minister at War, and Commander in Chief in Italy, has communicated advices from Iiis •head, quarters at St. Ste'phano, of the date October 19th, that the enemy, on the i8:h; at five in the morning, commenced hostilities by a brisk fire of artillery and small arms on several points, of the Adige. His'object was to engage the attention of the Army at several places, and attempt a passage; and lie, .in fact, succeeded in passing the river near Verona, and likewise at Bonavign. The pas-.age. at the former of these places could not be contested'with him, on account of his advantageous situation, protected by Castef Vecchio; and at the latter it was fa-voured by a strongly fortified Island in the A dig?, and the assistance of several mills and boats. . ,

His Royal Highness,, judging that his right wing,..resting against Caidiero, would be strong , enough t.n resist the enemy near Verona, and feeling more disquietude for his left wing,, proceeded on the 18th in the evening;,, with the centre bf his. army, to-wards Gal.di Setto, in order to attack the enemy at day break, in three columns, at A.lbaredo-,. His Royal Highness on his return to St. Srephanbj learned that the enemy hud in like manner anarsdoned the heights lie had

On Monday last, we received London .Papers of the « t h and 1 j th , by' which, we are enabled 10 lay before'our Readers the contents of Paris Journals to the 6th and Dutch to the 10th inst.—The Mcniteur of the id contains the twelfth Bulletin of the French army, and the Moniteur of the 4th the thirteenth Bulletin. The former presents riolhjng new respect-ing the movements of the armies—-itlreJates as much to .the amusements of the Court as to the marching of troops. By way of relief,, v/e suppose, to the insi-pidity of this Bulletin, a conversation, manufactur-ed no.doubt, is introduced between Gen. MACK, on his return to Vienna, and the Bavarian Gen. WK.K-D I S , in which the latter is made to use the language of reproach to the Austrian Government for the manner in which they hatl treated the Bavarians when they co-operated with the Austrians. The Bulletin concludes with a list of the Austrian Generals- taken prisoners at Elchingen, Weftingen, Memmingen, and t^m. And here it may be proper to remark, that the Austrian account of,the affairs at Wertingen, Gunzbourg, and Uim, which will be found in our second page, prove that the French statements of the losses of the AustriaDs have been most grossly exag-gerated, whilst their own have been as cautiously concealed of diminished. It will be seen that the Austrian loss in the affair of Wertingen was not 3000 men—that it was less in the aifair of Gunzbourg— and that in theaffairof UJm, on the n t h , the French, after a very severe conflict, .were beaten—that two of their regiments of cavalry, and the same number of infantry, were nearly cut to pieces—that they re-tired in great disorder, and were pursued all night, leaving 1500 dead upon the field, and from 8 to goo made prisoners, and losing besides n pieces of can-non, and 30 ammunition waggons.

The thirteenth Bulletin announces the passage of the Inn, on the 38th, Little resistance was made to the enemy : nor, indeed,, does there appear to have been any considerable Austrian or Russian force on the right bank ; they had some batteries from which they played upon the French, and they are said to have had 50 of their rear guard taken prisoners.— The Bulletin doesnot inform us where the combined Austrians and,.Russians are ; it is supposed tliey have retired to the EnS, with the intention of covering V ienna. Ah article from Frankfort asserts that Gen. KUTUZOW had retreated to WE!s to wait for the rein-forcements coming up to join him. The whole of the French army however had not crosscd the Inn on the zSth — F o u r divisions were'then between the Iser and the Inn on their march to the latter river. It was reported at the.Hague on the 7th inst. on the autho-rity of dispatches said to haye been received by the French Ambassador, that a general action had been fought on the Inn, in wh'ch Marshal BKHKAJJOTTK defeated the Russian.!, and took 15,000 ol them pri ; sorters, independently of the killed, and wounded.

To this intelligence the London Papers do not at-tach any credit.—The Russians were not on the Inn —at least when the French qrossed that river, "there was but a very small Austrian and Russian force on the right bank, and their own Bulletin merely states, that tliey took 50 of. the Austrian rear guard prison-ers. A OatLle is. much moie.likely to take place 011 theEifs thai) ihe,Inn.

Whilst these operations have taken place in Ger-many, MASSED A has been endeavouring to force the Archduke CH A R L F.S to retire from the vicinity of the Adige—but his success has evidently; been very tri-fling, .if indeed he can claim any. His Letter to the Minister, relates merely to the passage of the Adige on the 18th ult —Oil. that day he did nothing more than obtain possession of the bridge of the'Castle of Verona,-after an obstinate battle which lasted ii hours, in which the French, as usual, are said to have sustained-little loss, whilst that of the Austrians was very gr.es:.' But it is evident that the French were not able to advance for some time beyond the bridge.

Eleven days, afterward?, on 'the'29th, we find them, still possessed only of the Bridge,—-Vn.that day they extended themsel ves belore the Bridge, attacked the Austrian positions,." and forced" them trom Vero-nette.—but it is evident: that'they were riot able to gain much ground—repeated'chargcs of cavalry were made, but without'much success'. The French did not get far beyond St. 'Martina, about five miles from the Adige. In this attack, as in the first, the loss of the French is stated lobe trifling, Whilst that, of the Austrians is declared to be very gaeat. We have no 'doubt i t ' will be found that in neither of these attacks have the French much reason to boast of their success.

The Dutch Papers are]sbouring to prove, that the Politics of the Court of. Berlin have been changed by the French successes,' and that the E mpcror of R u s-ElA is gone back to Petersburg!) in disgust.—But amidst all these endeavours*f the Dutch Papers, it is easy to see that they, really* believe the sentiments of the* Prussian."Cabinet" %> ,'be decisively hostile to Franccl Wc can add, too,-that letters of the 9th,

1 received in London, from- Holland, meniion the de-, .'partuxeof DUROC -from Berlin, arid that the first division of the Prussian army is on it? march to. Hol-land. • ' ' • • ' * , ,

The official accounts from iff-Vienna' Court Gazette, of the action of the, 18th ult. cont'essrs that the ['"fertch die pass . the Adige on that ;d.,:y, but tht* ad-vantages they gained we,re trifling, and of short, du-ration ; the Archduke CHARLES proposed to attack them on the morning of the 19th, but they had eya- • cuated all their positions on the right Bank., arid destroyed the Bridge of Verona.—Ot. the battle on the-39th, no accounts of course, would have been. received from Vienna, the date of the latest Vienna' article, being only of the 3 0 t h ; but vve havecrio doubt it will be found that M A S jr.
