Region IX (Zamboanga Peninsula) is located in Northwestern Mindanao, extending toward the Southwest part of Sulu Archipelago and Borneo. It has an area of roughly 18,730.1 square kilometers. The peninsula is connected to the main part of Mindanao through an isthmus situated between Panguil bay and Pagadian bay. The boundary between the peninsula and the mainland is officially marked by the border between Zamboanga del Sur and Lanao del Norte. With the enactment of Executive Order No. 36 on September 19, 2001, Zamboanga Peninsula covers Zambo-anga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur, Zamboanga Sibugay and highly urban-ized chartered Zamboanga City.
